Presentation Reflection

I think everyone’s projects were really great, and I loved seeing the different things everyone did. I especially loved how a lot of people did the same genres, but each person’s was unique. 

That being said, I really liked Alexa’s project on the theater community. I’m probably biased, my first project was on the theater community too, but I like how she pointed out that there was more to a theater major than just being an actor. 

The poster was great, and you showed you put a lot of work into this project when you yo showed us pictures of your posters in 20 different places around campus. I also think the QR code is more effective than putting a plain old link at the bottom of the poster, I think you got 15 scans right? That’s really impressive. Putting the QR code made your content easily accessible, and I would not have thought of that. 

Another aspect of your project I liked were the stories from theater majors about what they are doing with their degrees, You had a lot of great content on your blog. 

Most of all though, I think theater and arts education is one of the most important parts of school. I think it is more important than sports. I’ve heard that emphasis is placed on sport to learn how to work with a team, but theater does the same, and so much more. I’m pretty sure I wrote my 8th grade FCAT essay on the same thing! I just really believe in your topic.

Presentation

I enjoyed all of the presentations, it is hard to pick one that was a favorite. I think my favorite presentation would have to be Brandon’s. I like all of the presentations that created a powerpoint or prezi because it was easiest follow with what they were saying. Brandon used a powerpoint in his. He also did not write too much on the slides so we could easily read his slides while still pay attention to what he was saying. I thought his genres were well organized and connected. His project was also the most successful. He had over 100 views on each of his genres. I think thats why his presentation was the most interesting to me because it was cool to see what his strategies were since it basically went viral. 

Everyone did a really great job on Project 3 in my opinion. It was fun to watch everyone’s ideas and see how they promoted them. I didn’t realize how many people did a buzzfeed article!

Presentation Reflection

       All of the presentations were great, and I was really impressed by my classmates! I thought Brandon’s presentation was the best because his PowerPoint was organized and intriguing. It was easy to follow, and he gave a lot of information about his project. He really put effort into his project, which was clear because he basically went viral. He had so many followers and views for each of his genres! It was cool to see him succeed. 

      I really liked how he made each of his genres because they were all neat and interesting. Even if I wasn’t in this class, I would still want to view his work! His genres all connected to each other, and his project was very effective. 

      Everyone did such a great job with Project 3, and it was really cool to see what my classmates are all passionate about! Happy Holidays everyone!

Chapter 10: Assembling A Multigenre Project

Hello my fellow ENC2135 classmates. Are you ready for yet another thrilling Tumblr post regarding the Bedford Book of Genres? Well I am so let up get right to it! This chapter was all about the ways in which a writer like myself can effectively make multiple genres regarding the same topic. This was one of the most helpful readings I have read all year in ENC2135 because of the fact that I need all the help I can get in creating my three genres for my project #3. Within this 10th chapter I found that the most helpful piece of information was the steps to assembling a multigenre project. The five steps that the chapter list and talks about are to introduce your project and provide context, sequence your genre pieces, title your project, create an Author’s or Artist’s Statement, and to package your project creatively. Also, I found that the examples of some multigenre projects were very helpful. So overall, this chapter has given me a chance to see how I am going to finally structure my project three and I should be completely ready to do this now! See you in class guys!

Assembling a Multigenre Project

I think this may have been the shortest thing we’ve had to read. I don’t mind. 

This chapter was pretty much about project three, it’s too bad all of my genres are done and now I’m just letting time pass while they circulate. This will be helpful when I try to label the things I’ve done cause right now I don’t know what to call them. 

I really liked the breakdown of the different options of genres for the dog paper, makes me wish my project two was about dogs, not newspapers. 

The book tells us that when we are breaking our projects down into genres, we have to consider a few things, like how we can ‘further out purpose’ how we reach our audience and what are modes and medias will be. Then it goes into the steps of a multigenre project, which are: 

1. Introduce your project. This means you write something that lets your audience know what everything is all about, and give information that will help them understand what they see. 

2. Put your pieces in an order that makes sense. The book gives the example where your project is on a problem/issue the first piece should be about the issue and the last part should be possible solutions. 

3. Give your project a title. Seems pretty self explanatory to me. 

4. Create your authors statement. This seems like the introduction to me 

5. Deliver it creatively. Don’t just put it in a folder, be better than that

Ch. 10

            A multigenre project is a collection of three or more genre compositions that are built around one topic. I like how the chapter started with examples of different genres of a singular topic. I also was reminded to view my topic from various perspectives. By taking a broader look, I can reach a wide audience.

           The steps that the chapter gave on assembling a multigenre project were extremely helpful. You have to introduce your project before you can sequence the pieces of the project. Third, you have to give your project a title. It should reflect the main message of you project. Next you can create an artist’s statement to evaluate the project overall. Finally, you can package your project in a way that shows creativity and uniqueness.

          I thought the example of Gwen Ganow’s multigenre project was really unique. Her brochure used a lot of pathos in it, and it had a persuasive tone to it. I liked that the chapter mentioned her brochure could be handed out in person or uploaded online, reaching a wide audience. The genre was short and to the point, but it was also intriguing. Gwen chose to use gay pride flags instead of bullet points, setting her piece apart while simultaneously drawing attention. This project stood out, and I hope to achieve that same goal with my own project.

SFH Readings 11/17

SFH Layout and Pages

This reading was all about how you layout out pages, like how you want the paper to be oriented, paragraph break ups, colors, fonts and the overall organization of your piece. 

The first section of this passage is about the size and orientation of your page. The size page you choose affects how much  information you can include in your paper. The smaller the paper, the less information you can fit on it, go too large though and it can be hard to focus on one point of text, or if the paper is online will take to much scrolling around to find it. 

It then talks about how to break down the material into “readable units” It basically says large, lengthy paragraphs are boring and hard to read. The text says break it up with color and fonts, text boxes, lines and images. 

It moves on, saying that putting the most important stuff at the top of the page and the less important stuff at the bottom is a great way to organize your paper. 

The article says alignment is important, that you want to direct readers down and across the page. You can do this through lists, tables and frames. 

It also tells you to avoid clutter and revise to flow and readability. And which fonts are best for that. I had no idea that’s how those symbol fonts were used! 

SFH Images and Photos

This passage is all about inserting photographs into our writing. Saying it “enlivens” our writing. 

The images we use can come from many sources, just make sure they don’t have a copyright or you could get in trouble for using them. I just ran into this when I was trying to find pictures for my Buzzfeed article, but I’m pretty sure the pictures I used were all good. 

The book says you should edit your pictures, cropping, re sizing and coloring the images before you actually place the image in your paper.

Analyzing Visual Rhetoric 

This was a very quick, two page passage with questions to ask yourself when looking at visuals. 

There were some of the ones we’ve all heard before, like who is the audience, what is the purpose, genre and medium. 

Then there are also new questions that take from the other two readings we had assigned, like are the margins sufficient and are the fonts readable.

These questions will be helpful when writing up the report on all of our genres.

Reflections for 11/17 Class

I found these readings to be helpful for project three, especially because one of my genres is a fact sheet. Yesterday when I was in Strozier, I spent so long trying to figure out what fonts to use, how to format my document, how big to make my boxes, etc… I thought the first reading helped me find the answers to all of these questions. All of the picture and diagram examples made me realize how important it is to actually put thought into the layout of your genre. 

For example, no one wants to read a document that is all words and no indents and a teeny tiny font. I learned the importance of indentations and spacing before reading this because I am a culprit of making my paragraphs really long. It can be intimidating looking at a documents that has no breaks… sometimes, us readers just need a break you know? 

DBLTB (Don’t be like this book.)

I liked reading the difference between the serif and the sans serif fonts. it definitely made me reconsider the fonts I am using for my genres.

Make sure to make everything pretty! I know this sounds cliche but the reading stresses the importance of making documents appealing to the eye. Everything is a competition my friends!

Just like SFH Images and Photos says, a picture is a thousand words. Photos can help us at just a glance know aspects of our subjects that would require a lot of explaining if words were used. Adobe Photoshop, iPhoto, and Picture Man can all be used for editing photos. Copyright also comes into play with editing images, it is important to ethically change a picture. Images should be no larger than it absolutely needs to be for the reader to read and understand it. We can crop images, place images to wrap texts, color images, and modify images all to fit the needs of our genre. The biggest thing I learned from this reading is to select a color scheme that will best fit your writing situation.

I must say, it was very difficult for me to read Analyzing Visual Rhetoric on my computer which is really ironic because all of the readings are about making things easy for the audience.. LOL

When you pick a genre, think about the intended audience, genre, mode, medium, and accesibility… if your reader can’t find it… whats the point! Make sure your piece is organized in a way that will be easy to follow. Always have organization so your reader will believe your ethos.

Readings for 11/17

In “Lay Out Pages,” I learned the difference between indented and block paragraphs. Indented paragraphs need no extra spacing, but block paragraphs need the space in between each paragraph to distinguish them. I learned I should put important information in a column that spans the body of the page, and the article talked about how white space helps avoid clutter. A page can’t be full of details or else the reader will get overwhelmed. Fonts are also a fun way to spice things up on a page, but choosing a font is actually important in order to efficiently communicate the purpose of the page.

             “Images and Photos” talks about how some pages need pictures in order to communicate the intended message and purpose correctly. Illustrations can carry a lot of information in an easy format. While people have the ability to edit pictures, the article warns that one should do so ethically. Editing should not compromise the original content of a photo. Also, I learned that when placing images on a page the text should flow around the pictures. Photos can be in different colors as well, which can either enhance or hinder the purpose and message.

             “Analyzing Visual Rhetoric” gave a list of questions and things to think about when trying to create a page. It asks the reader to think about if the intended purpose and audience is clear. It also reminds the reader to question whether the layout is effective and appropriate. It asks if images are the right side and if they really contribute to the page. These articles all helped give me a basis to go off of when creating genres for project 3.

Viral Marketing Reflection

I have to say it was not fun right away seeing that I had five article to read but once I began to read them I realized they were not too bad of reads. 

So what is viral marketing?? This is when people talk about what is being marketed, thus spreading the word about it and causing the product to be advertised. Instead of other ways of advertising the consumers are the ones spreading the word. 

What does it do? Viral marketing works to spread the product and show more people what they should be purchasing, and hearing it from a friend instead of a billboard can be more successful. 

How does it work? The idea of viral marketing works like a fire, a fire starts small and if uncontrolled it can be spread like crazy and become a large fire. Viral marketing can start small but if people start talking than they are going to influence people to also start talking and then a “wildfire” occurs. 

When does it work? Viral marketing has a better tendency to work when the audience that is the target is actually being targeted and the people doing the marketing are successfully doing their job. If the intended audience is not determined than it will be difficult for the marketer to be successful.

What is Viral Marketing?

Viral marketing is a technique that uses consumers to spread the word about a product to their friends and others primarily through media. Social media is a primary place for the word about a product to spread so it is used heavily in viral marketing.

What does it do?

Viral marketing is meant to increase the awareness of a brand or product. This then leads to increased sales, which is the aim of the company.

How does it work?

Marketing over the internet is a primary place to market. There are endless digital genres for information to be put into. You can sell a product through YouTube with videos that review the product, you can sell products through Instagram accounts, and you can sell products through online book downloads. I actually follow an account on Instagram that is based around a diet that this woman created. She sells copies of her downloadable online book while maintaining a regular YouTube channel with updates about her product.

When does it work?

Viral marketing works when your product makes an impact on people. For a product to take off and become popular, people have to be talking about it and paying attention to it. No product is ever successful without consumers. To make a product successful, you must market correctly, and by correctly, I mean you have to catch the attention of your consumers. You have to evoke some emotion within the buyer for them to connect with your product. This means allowing them free access to an extraordinary pitch. You must make it out of the ordinary. Being creative is what consumers are looking for, and they don’t even know it.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is when technology is used to increase product awareness and increase sales. The product is highly advertised and people therefore purchase more of the product. It shows people what they should be buying. Hearing from someone you know that a product is good is more personal and trustworthy.

 It spreads like crazy once it starts and gets going, and the word about the product goes around like a wildfire. The more people talk about it, the more popular the product becomes. The product has to be accessible to many people and convenient for them to use.

Viral marketing works when the intended audience is targeted in an efficient way that becomes productive. The marketers have to be smart about how they go about it. The audience has to be established from the beginning of the marketing process. 

I’ve seen many advertisements use hashtags to allow people to look up more about the product. This is a great way to get many people in the same place. Creativity is also critical in order to make the product gain attention and be attractive to many people. Viral marketing is becoming bigger and bigger.

PUPPIES :)

Puppies can require a great deal of work, having a dog is a lot having a baby, there are lot of hidden requirements for caring for the new puppy. First off, puppies are not usually bathroom trained, therefore the new owner will likely be finding a lot of number one puddles and number twos all over the house until the puppy is trained to go outside. Also, a puppy is generally very cute so the owner may have to realize that the puppy must be punished because the puppy is likely going to destroy furniture and go to the bathroom inside while it is being trained. When the puppy does something bad the puppy needs to be punished and when it does something good it should be rewarded to help the puppy really understand what is right and what is wrong. Another thing someone might not realize going into getting a new puppy is that the dog will become attached to its new owner, especially if a rescue puppy, and when the owner leave its side, the puppy will not be happy and will start to whimper. As the saying goes a dog can become an owners best friend, the dog will likely develop a special bond with the new owner, unless the owner is cruel and should not be owning a puppy.

Enough about the unknowns of training a puppy, another thing a new puppy owner may not realize is really how expensive the dog itself might be, but mostly how expensive the upkeep of a dog really is. Between the amount of food a healthy dog needs, the treats for rewarding good behavior, toys to play with, the bed/ crate that the dog needs to for when the owner leaves to go to work or go out. Another expense can boarding the dog if the new owner goes out of town for a few days, it can become very expensive to have someone watch your dog or come over to dog sit. Another expense is that dog are just like humans, they have to get a shots to stay healthy, and those shots can be very expensive but they are necessary. Also, if the new puppy or dog becomes infected with something, like fleas for example, then the medication to treat the fleas can be expensive as well.

The moral of this story is that people are really not aware of what it takes to own a puppy, so as a new owner make to be prepared for all the life adventures and expenses the dog will have.

I really like this! I can tell this piece is informative because you gave a lot of factual statements and wrote in an unbiased manner. The purpose is to inform people that owning a dog is a huge responsibility. Many people don’t think about this and how expensive owning a pet really is. I like how your closing paragraph is a simple summary of the text that leaves readers with something to think about. I saw logos was used because the whole text used logic to inform the reader of the topic. The writing style was simple and easy for anyone to understand. The tone was informative because you were stating facts that you thought people should know. The voice was passive because you just put the information out there without trying to sway the reader. The design elements direct my attention in a way that I can follow what you’re trying to say in an easy manner. I can tell research informed this piece because it sounds like you’ve had a dog or have seen someone with a dog have to take on the responsibility that comes with being an owner. This piece makes people realize that being an owner isn’t all fun and games. Owning a dog means you’re in charge of the safety and happiness of a living animal. Nice work!

Jax

          The day I adopted my dog was the best day of my life. I was walking past a pet store that had allowed a shelter to bring in puppies in hopes that they would find nice homes. A dog jumping up and down in a fenced in area caught my attention – he was small but he was feisty. He wouldn’t let the volunteers touch him, and he refused to just sit calmly as people walked by. As soon as I came in his line of vision, he stopped moving. He tilted his head to the side and gave me a skeptical look as I placed out my hand for him to sniff. The volunteers warned me that he had a tempter, but I saw that he had a kind spirit inside of him. He came closer and closer until he had stretched to give my hand a lick. The volunteers were shocked because he usually took a while to trust people. I learned that his last owner had abandoned him on the side of the road, and a volunteer who had seen it happen had brought him in to the shelter. I knew I had to have him, and I wanted to protect him from the world.

           I took him home and named him Jax (because my younger brother was really into Sons of Anarchy at the time). For two solid weeks, Jax would not leave my side. I was the only one he trusted to feed him and take him on walks, and I felt honored that he had bonded with me so quickly. Jax would sleep by my side faithfully every night, and he would wait by the front door for me while I wasn’t home. He eventually grew to love my mom and brother as well, but he has always chosen my lap to sit on. Being away from him is hard, but seeing his reaction when I come home from college is one of the sweetest moments to witness.

Chapter 9

Revising your work is important because first drafts are usually just getting your ideas out of your head (Shitty first draft!!). I think throughout the semester so far, we have learned how important it is to revise. Having to write three to four drafts really forced us to look at our work more closely and revise.

The book divides revising into two groups, first one being “Revising based on your own observations” and the second one being “Revising based on peer review”.

We did a lot of peer review in class which helped us make improvement on our projects. We had our classmates and teacher do the peer review but ideally you want someone from your intended primary audience to help you out. When you are still brain storming, others can talk to you about your ideas and approaches. When you have a rough draft, others can respond to your focus, development, voice and organization. Once you have your first real draft, respondents can give feedback on how clearly you convey your purpose, how well you are reaching your audience and what you might do better or different.

For me, peer review really helps, because you get a new pair of eyes to look at your paper. It helps you feel more confident about your paper and also helps you incorporate new ideas into your work.

The second part of the chapter about remixing your work definitely will help us with project 3!

Chapter 9

First of all I would like to put out the statement that this Gif is my sub-conscious whenever I am not working on Project 3 or anything related to ENC2135.

This chapter was basically written for project 3!!! I wish we read it earlier because it helped clarify the whole remixing of the genre thing. I didn’t think you could use a powerpoint as a new genre so that blew my mind a little bit.

Also, I love how this book always picks interesting examples for us to read. I enjoyed reading the author’s statement about the movie review of X-Men. That is one of my favorite movies so I found it cool to read about it a little more. 

I agree with what the book says about peer-review. I look forward to workshops in class and conferenes because my peers or my professors always see something that I don’t see. I think it is important for writers to realize that they don’t have to take every piece of feedback they get and fix it. We have to remember that it is all opinions and we need to think about why they may have given that feedback.

I know revising a pain but it is important like the book says because our first draft is really just to get our thoughts onto a piece of paper. I liked the analogy of a painter creating a piece of art. Nothing is done in the first try, it takes weeks to mold and sculpt the project in a true work of art!
