LAST Tumblr post- Reflection on most effective presentation

Since I am not going to be in class ion Thursday due to the NCAA volleyball tournament I am going to post my Tumblr post on the most effective presentation today.

I really liked the presentation from Corina. I might have paid a little more attention to it because we have been discussing the project trough out the entire time, and I liked her overall topic just because I am interested in that type of stuff.

When it comes to the way she presented, I liked her PowerPoint slide with pictures representing each of her genres and the links below that led you to her genres.  Her genres were a twitter account, an info graphic and an interview. I think she met all of the requirements for this project with the genres she chose.

Her twitter account met the requirement for number of tweets, compared to some other ones presented today. I liked her info graphic because I could get information out of it without reading through some long text. My favorite of her three genres is her interview. I like that she didn’t just type out the interview but actually kept it as an audio recording. She made a good point, saying that she wants people to know that she actually took the time to do the interview and not have people think she just mad it up.

It’s a shame that she did not have a lot of time to circulate her genres but overall, I think they are very effective.

I really enjoy Corina’s sense of humor and it was displayed through her Twitter. I liked her use of memes and hashtags. They made her account witty and interesting.

Presentation Reflection

I think everyone’s projects were really great, and I loved seeing the different things everyone did. I especially loved how a lot of people did the same genres, but each person’s was unique. 

That being said, I really liked Alexa’s project on the theater community. I’m probably biased, my first project was on the theater community too, but I like how she pointed out that there was more to a theater major than just being an actor. 

The poster was great, and you showed you put a lot of work into this project when you yo showed us pictures of your posters in 20 different places around campus. I also think the QR code is more effective than putting a plain old link at the bottom of the poster, I think you got 15 scans right? That’s really impressive. Putting the QR code made your content easily accessible, and I would not have thought of that. 

Another aspect of your project I liked were the stories from theater majors about what they are doing with their degrees, You had a lot of great content on your blog. 

Most of all though, I think theater and arts education is one of the most important parts of school. I think it is more important than sports. I’ve heard that emphasis is placed on sport to learn how to work with a team, but theater does the same, and so much more. I’m pretty sure I wrote my 8th grade FCAT essay on the same thing! I just really believe in your topic.

Presentation Reflection

Everyone did such a great job presenting their three genres this week! This was probably my favorite week of ENC2135 because the presentations were so entertaining. I was actually pretty jealous that I had such a difficult time coming up with my issue because some of you guys had super interesting topics. The one presentation that really stood out to me, however, was Maria’s. I really enjoyed her campaign about keeping Uber in the Miami-Dade area. I grew up closer to that area than I did to Tallahassee, so I felt like I could connect more with her audience. I liked that everyone did Buzzfeed articles but I really enjoyed the quiz Maria made.  It was a fun idea that came out looking very polished. Maybe I’m a sucker for quizzes, but I think that’s what made her project stand out to me. I’ve never actually used Uber before but her project made me want to try it out. The quiz was successful to her campaign in my eyes because it persuaded me to desire to take part in her campaign.  I would definitely consider signing her petition as well. I also thought her infographic was great. I liked how she used colors to brighten it up. It was also very concise and informative. Thanks for a great semester. It’s been real.

Multigenre Reading

So I was really excited when I finished the reading and found out that this reading assignment was small. Another thing I loved about this reading was it was so applicable to the assignment we are currently working on, it definitely helped assure me that I was going in the right direction with the progress of my three genres. The reading gave some steps that are already proving to be beneficial for the genres I am creating.

They are: 

1) Introduce your project, so basically I would say this applies to our thousand words and our presentation in a few weeks. You want people to know the purpose of the project that way the attended is audience is targeted. 

2) Put your genres in an order that makes sense based off what each one is, for example if one genre leads into the next then place them in the correct order. This will apply for when we go to present to the class and for our ePortfolio.

3) Have a title for your project- whether the same as your project two title or not make sure you remember this step, many forget to title their works. 

4) Create an author’s statement- kind of way to introduce your topic and the idea of the genres. 

5) Show your works creatively- don’t be boring, make the genres fun.

Chapter 10: Assembling A Multigenre Project

Hello my fellow ENC2135 classmates. Are you ready for yet another thrilling Tumblr post regarding the Bedford Book of Genres? Well I am so let up get right to it! This chapter was all about the ways in which a writer like myself can effectively make multiple genres regarding the same topic. This was one of the most helpful readings I have read all year in ENC2135 because of the fact that I need all the help I can get in creating my three genres for my project #3. Within this 10th chapter I found that the most helpful piece of information was the steps to assembling a multigenre project. The five steps that the chapter list and talks about are to introduce your project and provide context, sequence your genre pieces, title your project, create an Author’s or Artist’s Statement, and to package your project creatively. Also, I found that the examples of some multigenre projects were very helpful. So overall, this chapter has given me a chance to see how I am going to finally structure my project three and I should be completely ready to do this now! See you in class guys!

Chapter 10 BBG

Chapter 10 in the Bedford Book of Genres has to do with multigenre projects, which is exactly what we have been working on in class. The chapter briefly reviews what a multigenre project is and how to put one together. It then goes into the steps of actually assembling a multigenre project. In step one, you are supposed to introduce your topic. Step one is meant to consist of a one to two page introduction that includes a summary of your project, your audience, and the reason why you chose that specific topic. Step two introduced an idea that I hadn’t had much thought on: the sequencing of your genre pieces. You are supposed to put them in order based on your presentation. Before reading this article, I did not even think of this step.  Now, I realize that this is a vital step in the presentation. In the third step, you are supposed to title your project. This can be converted into a hashtag in social media genres, which is what we focused on during our last class. Titles are meant to be creative. It is the first thing an audience sees when exploring your project. If it is not interesting or eye-catching, your project may not be as successful. In step four, you make an artist’s statement. An artist’s statement is a way to discuss research that you have conducted and rhetorical choices you have made when putting this project together. Finally, you must package your multigenre project. Interesting visual aids and delivery really make the project look polished and put together.

Reflecting on “SFH Layout and Pages”, “SFH Images and Photos” and “Analyzing Visual Rhetoric”

If four years of working on my high school yearbooks has taught me anything it’s that a good layout is more important than you might think. If something pretty to look at you can get an audience to, at the very least, give your work a second glance.

The reading “SFH Layout and Pages” brought up a lot of pertinent information I kept in mind back when I designed the pages for the yearbook, and refreshed my memory on some important things that I’ll need to remember while working on project three.

“SFH Images and Photos” also reminded me of a lot of important things from my yearbook days. Color schemes, for instance, are delicate things—you don’t want anything to clash, if using text readability must be kept in mind, etc.

Finally, “Analyzing Visual Rhetoric” provided us with a kind of checklist we can use while working on project three. It provides questions we can ask ourselves as we work such as: does the design appeal to your audience? 

We can also ask ourselves these questions once again after we complete our genres just to be sure they’re doing everything they need to do. For example, I will be sure to go back and alter the coloring on one of my genres thanks to this reading (and some advice from Ms. B).

Readings for 11/17

I probably reacted the same way the other students did, I was like “Ugh, I really have to read three articles?? Like that is going to be a lot.” But then as I started reading I quickly realized it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, the readings actually proved to be helpful. They turned out to be relevant and helpful for going into project three, the articles were about how to really design documents and the different medias, which that is all the project three really is, using media to target an audience. The articles really showed what needed to be done and what is important for creating our different medias. The par where it talks about breaking up the long paragraphs into something smaller with color and images to make it less boring and more interesting for the reader. I know personally for me I like looking at pictures instead of of long paragraphs of information that I think is pointless. Another point that I find really helpful from the reading was that you need reduce the clutter, you need to make sure the flow is simple and that anyone can understand it. This doesn’t mean you have to make it like a kindergartner project but you do not have to make some complicated project that only NASA scientists will understand.

Readings for 11/17

The articles for this reading assignment were helpful but self-explanatory. SFH Images and Photos suggested adding media to presentations. Doing this helps liven up a presentation by giving the audience something to look at. Presentations that are laden with text are not as interesting as those that possess a mix of text and visual aids. Most of this article was just an in-depth look at what we have already learned.  SFH Layout and Pages served as a guide to a project’s layout. It gave tips on the visual construction of a project. It advised composers to leave white areas in a piece instead of filling it up with text. White spaces allow readers to take a visual break while jumping from one chunk of information to the next. Font is also important when it comes to the visual layout of a project. You want to be sure that the audience can read it and that it is appropriate for your topic. Analyzing Visual Rhetoric served as a useful checklist for students to use when reviewing their final project. It asked questions concerning the purpose of the text, the appropriateness of the font and color, and the effectiveness of the layout. You don’t want to use bright colors on what is supposed to be a depressing topic. You want to engage in what your audience is supposed to be feeling and enhance that feeling with color.

Viral Marketing Reading Reflections

First of all, I have to say I much prefer readings that are not in The Bedford Book of Genres or The McGraw Hill Handbook. The articles we read, although there were five, were not bad at all. I actually enjoyed reading about something that is so prevalent in society.

What is Viral Marketing? Viral marketing is a form of getting your product to the public in an easy and cheap way.

What does it do? Viral marketing spreads products “like a virus.” This means that through marketing techniques a product can become extremely successful in a short amount of time. This does not only apply to physical products though. It could be anything from promoting a car (like BMW), an album, or in one example they used President Obama’s campaign as a form of viral marketing.

How does it work? Viral marketing works in a very user based way. Instead of a company hiring actors to say how awesome something is, actual people end up advocating for the product. Usually a viral ad will have some sort of catch phrase or something memorable about it. This makes people want to go out and see this product for themselves. I suppose this could either make or break a product if it does not live up to what the ad is saying. The point of viral marketing is to make the product as accessible to the public as possible. Social Media is another important aspect of viral marketing. Websites like YouTube and Twitter are extremely important.

When does it work? Viral marketing works whenever a product sees huge success in a short amount of time. If not the product, the ad campaign at least becomes very popular. Like one of the articles said, they weren’t sure how many of the millions of views bought BMWs but the fact that there were so many views raised awareness to the car company.

Viral Marketing Reflection

What is viral marketing? Viral marketing as Wikipedia describes it are “marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networking services and other technologies to try to produce increases in brand awareness”. Or more simply it’s putting an advertisement out into the world and allowing people to promote it and share it with each other.

What does it do? Viral marketing makes spreading information easier. It decreases the work load of businesses and advertisers by allowing people to share information and market their projects for them. The term “virus” is used to describe the scenario because as the campaign increases with popularity among the masses, the information is shared like a virus.

How does it work? It works when people pick up on an idea and use the readily available tools to share it. Social media has greatly increased this trend for advertisers to utilize viral marketing strategies. One of the reads included the Old Spice commercial from a few years ago, which most of us all remember and maybe even quote still. Another one that recently came out it the gum wrapper commercial that follows the couple throughout their relationship. I first saw it shared on Facebook and Twitter before I saw it on TV. I bet that company has more sales now that it’s had in a long time because everyone has now seen that one ad.

When does it work? Viral marketing generally works if it identifies with its target audience or makes them feel some sort of emotion. Whether that emotion is happy and evokes a smile or is more somber and makes someone feel sentimental, the ad has to reach people on some level. Boring ads or poorly timed ones that don’t reach the audience in the right way will never be candidates for successful viral marketing.

I didn’t really think about the emotion aspect, but you’re right… It does work when the audience feels an emotion. We tend to pay way more attention to things that target our emotions, so that’s definitely a really important aspect of viral marketing!

Viral Marketing

What is Viral Marketing?

Viral marketing is a technique that uses consumers to spread the word about a product to their friends and others primarily through media. Social media is a primary place for the word about a product to spread so it is used heavily in viral marketing.

What does it do?

Viral marketing is meant to increase the awareness of a brand or product. This then leads to increased sales, which is the aim of the company.

How does it work?

Marketing over the internet is a primary place to market. There are endless digital genres for information to be put into. You can sell a product through YouTube with videos that review the product, you can sell products through Instagram accounts, and you can sell products through online book downloads. I actually follow an account on Instagram that is based around a diet that this woman created. She sells copies of her downloadable online book while maintaining a regular YouTube channel with updates about her product.

When does it work?

Viral marketing works when your product makes an impact on people. For a product to take off and become popular, people have to be talking about it and paying attention to it. No product is ever successful without consumers. To make a product successful, you must market correctly, and by correctly, I mean you have to catch the attention of your consumers. You have to evoke some emotion within the buyer for them to connect with your product. This means allowing them free access to an extraordinary pitch. You must make it out of the ordinary. Being creative is what consumers are looking for, and they don’t even know it.

Ever since Tommy was a little boy, he had always wanted a puppy. He wasn’t picky, just about any breed would do. He would constantly beg his mom and dad for a dog. On his ninth Christmas, after all his presents had been opened, Tommy’s parents pulled out one more gift from the dining room. Tommy anxiously waited to see what this special extra present would be. His parents rounded the corner with a wrapped box, which they handed to Tommy. His hands shook with excitement as he opened the box and saw a chocolate Labrador Retriever puppy looking back at him. Tommy couldn’t believe it, tears started to form in his eyes. “His name is Samson”, his father told him. Tommy smiled and picked Samson up out of the box. “I love him”, he said.

This writing is a narrative. It does not inform or persuade but rather, tells a story (I’m guessing fictional) of a little boy that receives a puppy as a Christmas gift.

The purpose of this document is to entertain. It does not offer up any information about puppies or anything in particular so it is not meant to inform. It also does not try to sway my opinion about anything in any way so it is not persuasive, either.

I would say ethos and logos are lacking in this document because they are not really needed. Anyone can tell a story. You do not have to be credible when putting something from your mind onto paper. On the other hand, there is a lot of pathos involved. The story talks about the little boy crying tears of joy when he opens the box. That definitely pulled at my heart strings.

I would say this is an informal writing piece. It’s a story that is made up, making it unprofessional. It is not meant to be put in an online data base for referencing.

The tone of this document is a cheerful one. Because it is set on Christmas and it includes a puppy, I can’t imagine it would be anything less than cheerful.

The voice I hear in my head while reading this document is like the voice that reads “T’was the night before Christmas…” I get a very jolly feeling while reading this.

The document was very descriptive. I could really picture the scene when Tommy receives the puppy and starts crying.

Research was not really a big part of this piece. I imagine the author got the information about puppies and Christmas from prior knowledge. I highly doubt she researched anything about Christmas or puppies, but I do not think it was very necessary. Telling a story is meant to entertain. The events in your story can be illogical or logical but that does not really affect whether the story is a good story.

Writing into the Day 11/10

I have a dog, but I do not have a puppy. Actually, I’ve never had a puppy. My family adopted my dog, Marley, when he was about two years old. In the summer of 2014, I received a phone call while driving back home from the beach. It was my mom. She asked me how I felt about adopting a dog. I was hesitant at first, mainly because she seemed to be overly excited. I was afraid she was rushing into things too fast. My mom spoke quickly on the other end of the line. She started to tell me the events that had led up to the current moment. You see, my dad is a locksmith and frequently drives around town fixing fire alarms, automatic gates, and home and business based security systems. This job takes him all around Florida but on this particular day, he was about a five minute drive from our house. This job took him to a vet’s office that had problems with its fire alarm. While working in the back by the kennels, my dad noticed something odd. Every time he would walk by the cages, a strange thumping sound would resonate. Eventually, he took the time and peered into the cages and saw a little black dog. The dog did not look like he was in good condition, either. He had a huge operating scar down his side, a weird haircut, and only one eye. However, this beat up little dog immediately captured my dad’s heart. He promptly took a video of the pup and sent it to my mom. Consequently, my mom called me to inform me that she was going to pick him up and take him for the weekend to see if he would be a good fit in our family. My dad left the job to go back to the security base and gather more supplies but when he returned to the vet’s office, the dog was gone. In that time, my mom and snuck Marley back to our house. My dad was surprised to say the least when he got home from work and saw the beaten up black dog in our house. That trial weekend, we discovered that my dad had come across the most affectionate dog he had ever met. We discovered his past was not an easy one, which drew us closer to him.

Ch. 9

I wish I had read this chapter while working on projects 1 and 2! There was a lot of helpful information on revising work. I loved the example of the artist’s statement on a review of X-Men. It was cool to read the notes the author wrote in the margins and it gave me an idea of how to go about revising more efficiently. I think making a revision list is a good idea in order to have clear expectations and goals. Using a PowerPoint as a remix of a genre was a unique idea that I would’ve never thought of, but it was interesting to view the slides and see how Gwen demonstrated her purpose.

The checklist at the end of the chapter is a good reference to use for project 3. It reminded me that I need to be mindful of my audience’s expectations and preconceived values. I also will focus on perfecting the design elements to be visually pleasing to my audience in order to capture and keep their attention. I have to distinguish my purpose for each remixed composition, and I have to figure out how to make my points clear. This list was the most helpful part of the chapter.

BBG Chapter 9

This chapter of the Bedford Book of Genres focused on revising your work. Any level of writing, high school or professional, the first draft of a work is almost never going to be the best draft. Most published writing is revised and edited many times before showing the world and even then can contain some errors. As we write in this class, and throughout our lives, revising will be a very important skill to have in order to improve our writing.

The chapter emphasizes the importance of asking others to respond to your “focus, development, voice, and organization,” in order to improve your work and gain advice from a new, fresh perspective. After I had self-revised my first draft of Project #2, I asked my friend, who is a very good writer, to revise it and tell me her thoughts. Although I did not include all of her suggestions, her perspective and criticism was still very helpful to me. This chapter also provides questions that I could have asked her to make the revision even more helpful. Specific questions about my tone, bias, word choice, etc. could have led to more precise feedback and a better final product.

I think a lot of people feel obligated to include the opinion of the person who revised their paper in their paper. I like that you can ask for an opinion but still choose to include what you think is right for your paper.

BBG Chapter 9

Creating a solid first draft is the hard part, for me. I am always looking at places I need to improve on, even though it is a first draft. I find myself picking at my writing until I get tired and give up, and this is usually known as my first draft. In the writer-based draft, logic and development is said to be lacking. I find this true in my drafts, as well. When my second paper went through the revision process, it came out with less pathos. The intentions of a paper are not always clear. This is why revising is vital. The book mentions that revising is appropriate when the writer becomes less objective. Asking for a second opinion from a classmate, teacher, friend, or coworker is typically a good idea. However, you must make sure the person you ask to revise your essay is fit to do so. You want the person you choose to be capable of giving constructive advice. They need to be able to analyze your paper on whether or not the main idea is clear or possibly give advice on the information presented in your paper. Typically, you do not want to ask your ten-year-old brother to give you advice on your paper. Revising is an excellent idea when it comes to creating a piece of writing but you need to make sure you trust the input of the people who are advising you.
