Zoro is so protective of his family because he’s already lost his first one
Honestly, this reveal (if you can even it call it that because we already knew Zoro was an orphan distantly related to Ryuma) just highlights the similarities/differences between Zoro and Luffy.
Luffy was a lonely kid. Zoro was also a lonely kid. And then, they made a friend: Ace and Kuina. The big difference is that Ace, Sabo, and Luffy took an oath of brotherhood. And it was that brotherly bond that helped Luffy cope with the loss of Sabo. Later, Sabo would help him cope with the loss of Ace.
Zoro didn't have that. When Kuina died he was alone. He didn't have a sibling or anyone until he met Luffy and joined the SH. Luffy being the Straw Hats' anchor is SO important specifically because he knows that you need to have an anchor.
(Nami having a sister, too, makes her and Robin's lives different, but ultimately, the Straw Hats are their family.)
Idk seeing people's reactions to this just tells me they're not really paying attention, or they're getting bogged down on the details. Like there's also the similarities/differences between Franky and Law (Tom's Workers vs Law joining the DQ family).
All the other strawhats had a secondary families, sanji and zeff, nami and ballemere/nojiko, luffy and ace/sabo, franky and toms workers, chopper and hiriluk/doctorine, brook and his first crew, usopp didn't really have familial bonds but he had bonds with kaya and the kids he’d play with
zoro and robin are the only two crew members who lost their loved ones really young and never had any other close ties before luffy, they never really had any type of surrogate family or support system before the strawhats and that's how we end up with robin at ennis lobby who gave herself up to “save” the best thing she’s ever had and zoro at thriller bark and how he’s metaphorically killing himself with training and never resting so he can make sure he protects the only family he’s ever had.Â
