donut panic! + mama's bakery + influx
there's a new game in town, and they're a real game changer. for linda and her new shop donut panic, donuts aren't a game. so you better up your game and head over to mission gorge road to grab some vegan donuts. i've known linda for a few years and she's had a few baking endeavors (as well as employment for some shady establishments, but that's chisme for another time). this place takes the cake.
now for some reason donuts are the vegan thing right now. donut panic kicks it up a knotch. pepples in oakland, voodoo up in that city up north, that place in vegas, that place in huntington, those places in north park and adams ave, they don't compare. linda is the best. she won. everybody give it up.
so far vegan donuts are on certain days, but that should be expanding soon (it's kind of her most popular thing after taking over the shop from the previous owners). there's always like 37 or 42 different flavors to pick from. but listen to this list of what was available last weekend:
"peanutbutter and jelly (pb glaze, raspberry jelly), saffron pistachio, lime coconut, chocolate espresso bavarian crème, leetle cinnamon rolls, and probably the homer/maple coconut 'bacon'"
unrivaled creativity, utmost sensitivity to craft, cultural diversity: linda is the mayor of donut-city, usa.
mama's bakery on el cajon blvd, right next to livewire, luigi's pizza, and the vaudeville candy theater place. it's so good! it's a tiny lebanese restaurant but really you just want the falafel wrap. two mexican women make the flat bread for the wraps (it's immaculate), and mama stocks a great supply of sodas (straight edge paradise). try it out, it's like six big ones.
influx. the coffee is alright. the internet never works at any of the locations (one in golden hill off broadway, one in little italy, one opening up soon in north park). but there's a sandwich called the tofu one which is great if not a little pricey and the carrot muffins are (were?) vegan.
