writing fanfics has made me go out of my way to learn things and do deep research in ways no colleges, exams, jobs or other projects ever could. yes, it’s a hobby. but it’s also my love and passion. next time you say “fanfics are an unserious activity for kids”, I will actually bite you. no ma’am, while kids certainly can enjoy writing fanfics, it’s sleep-deprived adults — with jobs and responsibilities, bills to pay, kids to raise, animals to take care of, battles to fight — who have built the fanfic community and always been the backbone of it since day one.
nothing brings us all together like zuko (atla)
saw this being debated and just wanted to talk about it too.
"is it rude if I politely ask a writer if they use ai or chatgpt on their works because I'm almost certain they do?"
yes, it is rude. no matter how polite you are being when you ask them this.
you say you are almost certain. so you are not absolutely certain.
unless you are absolutely, undoubtedly certain — with actual proof — that their writing is ai generated, never ever ask an artist if their work is ai generated.
I know several writers who would stop writing and delete all of their works if they were ever accused of using ai. so it doesn't matter if you are polite when you ask them this, you are suggesting that their works are ai generated, that they didn't create the works they could have spent hours, days, weeks, months or years working on.
ai and chatgpt are trained on real humans' works, they are trained to mimic the way real humans write. so if you say a genuine writer's work "looks ai", I'm gonna have to ask you what you think ai was trained on.
a writer whose English isn't their first language may also write in a way that "looks ai" to some, if they write in English and have to rely on translator.
using em dash isn't a sign of ai. I do it all the time. my fellow writers all love em dash.
having long paragraphs with "overly described scenes" isn't a sign of ai. I do it all the time, and so do my fellow writers.
all the "ai signs" are actually just what most writers actually do. they get mistaken for "ai signs" because sometimes the way writers write or describe a scene in a fanfic or an original work is different than the way people talk or text. because they're writing a fic and describing a scene, not chatting with a friend. the way I talk is different than the way I write my fics.
if you suspect a work was ai generated, but are not 100% sure, you can always just stop reading said work without saying anything.
if someone does use ai to write, they will either a.) deny and continue using ai to write or b.) admit because they see nothing wrong with it and continue using ai to write.
if a genuine writer was wrongly accused of using ai, they may stop writing altogether.
asking a writer if they use ai or chatgpt to write will always do more harm than good. witch hunting will always do more harm than good.
you are not "fighting against ai" by throwing around such accusations. you are harming genuine writers and artists.
It isnt an accusation. Its a fucking question. One that protects the very communities and artists that this post claims to defend.
all of the fanfic writers, whom I personally know, say the same thing that they would feel discouraged and might delete all their works if they were asked this.
it’s not “hey do you like x or y” question. it’s a subtle implication that your work looks like it was written by a robot within a minute. if you personally don’t find that offensive, that’s cool. but I know a lot of writers do. and they have the rights to be discouraged by it.
also we are talking about fanfic writers who write as their hobby, getaway or safe place, writers whose works you read for free. not writers who sell their works and are making profit from what they write. fanfic writers don’t owe you anything.
This just came across my dash. I'm going to be blunt.
Asking a writer or artist if they “use AI” is an accusation, no matter how you dress it up. It’s not neutral. It implies you think their effort, style, or voice is artificial. It implies that their human work doesn’t look human enough for you.
You don’t protect the community by policing people who are actually creating from scratch. You protect it by supporting human creators, reporting confirmed AI misuse when there’s evidence, and learning the difference between this sounds different than what I’d write and this is machine-generated.
Writers—especially fanfic authors—already pour their time, emotion, and identity into what they share for free. They don’t owe anyone proof of authenticity on top of that. And if your question makes someone want to quit writing, it’s not protecting the community. It’s shrinking it.
If you’re not 100% sure, just scroll. AI ethics don’t need to turn into public inquisition season.
“And if your question makes someone want to quit writing, it’s not protecting the community. It’s shrinking it.”
^^^^ this
so i just saw this post on tiktok saying something about ocs x canon are the worst. especially for self-shipping reasons. idk why but it just makes me a bit tearful.
maybe it's because i actually am a bit of a self-shipper (my first fics that i used to read at 11 were x reader). maybe it's because i'm acutely aware and try my best to craft an excellent oc despite knowing fandoms don't largely care. maybe it's because my writing has always seemed inadequate due to my perfectionist tendencies. maybe it's because i took such a long break from writing because of the fear of hate for my oc's and, by extension, my writing altogether.
it's just... i don't know how to feel about this.
when i write, i sympathize especially strong with both canon characters and ocs all the same. i feel like it's a necessary prerequisite to put yourself in the mind of the character if you want to make a good work. and i really don't want to invest so much love, care and emotion into writing only to be hated on for my perceived selfishness.
is it because i'm too sensitive? i'm not sure. writing keeps me grounded and i don't think people understand how much a person can be saved simply for having a creative outlet to let it all out. people diminish it to be a hobby but it's just... a lot more than that. at least to me it is
if the upper moons had become human after infinity castle due to tamayo's medicine, what do you think they would have done with their now human lives?
i think akaza would have still gone into the afterlife ofc. douma might have joined the japanese military (we all know what happened after the 1930s). but for kokushibo (?) i'm not really sure.
He’d die in a year max because of the demon slayer mark-?
ma'am there seems to be a misunderstanding 😅

what do you think are the most underrated/underrepresented soulmate au takes? not hanahaki, sensory sharing, etc. i mean really niche headcannons/practices you think would happen in a soulmate au but you have yet to see many fics incorporate it.
i'll go first: i think in a soulmate au where names/marks are shown on the wrists or other body parts, there would be an international organisation that would catalogue & document such records and help facilitate the meeting of soulmates as much as they can. i'm talking about an united nations level igo (international government organization) of sorts. no doubt it'll be a world where photo ids that have 'distinguishing marks' as a subsection will also have a 'soulmate marks' subsection. it just makes so much sense
If I see that fuckass picture of Akaza running away from Shinobu one more time I think I'm gonna LEGIT crash-out.
what are the aspects of a character study/centric fic that make you think, “woah. they really nailed that character down?”
here’s a little something i’m working on - a demon slayer fanfic featuring my oc x kokushibo. mentioned the gist of the plot in another post here. this is an excerpt from the ending of what will be a long fanfic from kokushibo’s pov. wrote & edited this in 15 minutes so please be nice 🥹🙏

Being free from the constraints of the midnight sky and displaced from his 480 year role as an Upper Moon meant a lot of things for Michikatsu. Opportunities were endless and as much as grief remained for a human life once lost, he did believe there was room for his new human life to reconcile with such tragedies at time’s telling. He wouldn’t repeat past mistakes. He would embrace change. He would embark on a new journey with his soulmate.
It was a newfound comfort and gracious mercy that sprung from the unconditional love that was once foreign to him. Yuuko had also become less wary, gradually comfortable. Even though, their past before this point was complex.
And if there was anything that Michikatsu knew of comforts, it was that too much of it gave easier way to complacency.
-
His lover had reverted into old habitual patterns comparable with those of a juvenile. Even Muichiro had certain awareness of appropriate conduct. And he was almost a decade her junior.
Frequently, Yuuko would lament about her lack of strength and lounge around in a pitiful state as sudden fatigue overcame her. Her elder housekeeper had to brew her some special soups and concoctions that somehow required freshly caught wildlife almost daily from heaven knows where. Muichiro frequently tagged along to help locate them, claiming to be of much help enthusiastically as he wanted to bond. A false supposition. Instead, the former demon found himself parenting a teenager that had his head in the clouds wandering aimlessly one moment whilst demonstrating his asocial attitude and budding delinquence in the next. Other times, Yuuko would lament at her lack of choice in kimonos, believing them to be too unsuitable for her tastes. She insisted on wearing his haoris everywhere leaving him with a dearth of clothes to wear. Most of the time, Michikatsu had to remain shirtless as he personally trained Muichiro. He could see Yuuko and her young handmaid giggling from nearby each time. What a horrible influence on the teenager his soulmate was being. Proper girls should not be ogling over men.
Michikatsu was left unamused with her antics… and everyone else’s. Her actions were unsuitable for a woman of her stature, a former Hashira with the bearings of a noblewoman in education. For her to be lacking in any manner was preposterous. Yuuko was more than capable enough to solve these problems by herself. It frustrated him to no end as he caught her laying in her futon at random hours of the day, playing with her pet kittens and cooing over their cuteness, or languidly relaxing back in a zaisu as she read.
Such idleness. Such childishness...
Of course, Michikatsu had long since realised that Yuuko's weaknesses were conditional. It took the first visit he made to her parents for it to register that it was because for the longest time, Yuuko couldn't have afforded to be immature for anyone else. There needed to be a form of strength within her at all times, even at her most vulnerable, even at her youngest.
Only now, in her soulmate's arms, could she finally experience peace.
It was why one morning, as the sun dawned and brightened up the once dark, midnight sky, Mitsukatsu reconciled with himself that he didn’t exactly mind these sudden moods and the occasional indolence of Yuuko's - he liked the desire for dependence on him rather than need for separation from him.
And, as it would seem, Yuuko rather liked this practice as well. He could never mistake the weight of her gentle, loving gaze and warmth of her snuggled form these many nights, even with closed eyes and sleepy mind.
... Honestly, what a bothersome soulmate he had.

happy wife means a happy life. poor kokushibo, having to deal with the ptsd that came with yuuko consistently experiencing eldest daughter woes. that said, please note that this wasn’t beta read, and my oc is still in the process of being created. i also had sworn off writing for a long while before this (due to depression and my own personal feelings of inadequacy) so i’m still getting my groove back 😅 that said, i hope you enjoyed it 🥹🌸
nah, you don’t understand. because while ao3 is down, i’m heading over to fanfiction.net for my daily dose of rare pairs and side character centricism
if anyone could recommend some wonderful artists that i can follow for inspiration and who draw female japanese samurais, please let me know 🥹🙏 really would love to add them to my pinterest board for the fic i’m working on 🌸
need some beta readers for my first chapter please 🙏
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WRITE THE KOKOSHIBO X SOULMATE HASHIRA READER ONE!!! I need that as an IV in my veins yesterday, please and thanks 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
You are such a sweetheart 🥹💕
I’ll definitely write it! Just know that it’s not a ‘X Reader’ fic (as much as I love those) but an ‘X OC’ fic. Hope you’re alright reading it 😓 I understand some people don’t really like OCs. It’s an idea that I feel really strongly about, with a lot of parallels to Kokushibo which means much more necessary characterisation for his soulmate. This takes away from the liberties you usually can have when interpreting oneself as ‘Reader,’ which is why I don’t want to be unfair tagging this an ‘X Reader’ fic.
Be prepared for the ‘Doomed by the Narrative’ vibes 🫠
what average word count is long enough for a good first chapter?
what are the kokushibo fics that you desperately want to read but haven’t yet been written?
