Organizers of this year’s Beijing Independent Film Festival are hoping the event will be able to proceed after being told film screenings weren’t allowed on the first day.

Aspiring directors bullied by police will certainly make a film about it. Thursday night, we will be the first to screen the rough cut of documentary, No Wasteland 2013 (dirs. Yao Yu and Li Dan). This July, Chinese Film students were placed under house arrest because of their participation in an independent film workshop. After disbanding, the students used social media to regroup and held the workshop 4 hours from the city in the countryside. Below are stills from "No Wasteland 2013." I was asked to post this and ask you all to share this poster for the 10th Beijing Independent Film Festival opening in 4 days in China: Fri 8/23/2013. This is the same date as last year's festival, where authorities requested for it to be shut down. We do not know what is going to happen this year. This notice was on the door of the organization that holds the festival, written by the chairman Li Xianting of the festival, says: "Per notification from government authority, the 9th Beijing independent film festival is closed early, as of today.--the committee of the 9th Beijing Independent Film Festival, 2012- Aug-23" — inSongzhuang, Beijing.
