On one mission deep into desert Cyno actually lost his life, but was brought back to life by Hermanubis spirit. They made a deal, that Cyno will live (he had great will to survive), he will gain Hermanubis powers, but in exchange after he dies he will serve as *Twilight Arbiter*, guide for the souls going into afterlife. Cyno agreed. 

After getting back to life his eyes turned red and hair white. When he got back to the Aaru capital, by general court and populace he is considered scary and weird. The order of silence is aware of Hermanubis presence now, but Cyno never spilled about his death. He has terrible scar on the neck that killed him, he hides it under usual black choker. (another au, another dead Cyno)

Cyno and Alhaitham at firsts don't get along to well. They would be passive aggressively butting heads, but somehow find common language as they believe most of the politicians in the court are idiots while the king himself doesn't listen to good advices. Additionally there's pending corruption of the land and catastrophe pending, which others don't take too seriously. 

Somehow they end up investigating the corruption of the land together.

Of course they fall in love along the way, as this was meant to be. Because who else is there.

But Cyno is resisting feelings, because he considers himself to be dead man walking. Doesn't know when death will take him, and why would he give Alhaitham any hopes and then break his heart. So it's better to not cross that line.

Nevertheless, the line is crossed, because of course it is. Because the world does fall apart and there's so little time to stop the corruption.

And then things fall apart so quickly. Deshret dies. The country gets ripper apart by corruption and monsters.

And then Alhaitham finds the way, because he always does. But the price is bloody, messy and his to pay. Going into heart of the corruption and allowing himself to be taken over.

And so, you see, he dies. And Cyno can't do anything about it, what was done is done. He couldn't stop him.

Alhaitham's soul took over the corruption, Hermanubis explains. His soul to the core is corrupted

And so Cyno begs for a way out, to save Alhaitham's soul someway, somehow. He will do anything. To allow Alhaitham to pass over to afterlife and then cycle of reincarnation.

Another deal is made. Because there is a way, though it is not easy, nor quick nor painless.

Because Alhaitham's soul gets thrown into cycle of rebirth and death. Every life, and hundreds of these await him will slowly heal allow for cleaning of th corruption. But it's for Cyno to bring his soul back again and again, and then soak they soul in the waters of the underworld rivers. Repeat, repeat, repeat the cycle. And bit by bit, Cyno too, will be forgetting all of what is Alhaitham. Of the man he used to be, his words and quirks. But Alhaitham's soul will be clean again. 

Alhaitham lives his lives, not always as human. Never remembering the past, or rather his original life. Yet plagued by nightmares of the horrors and pain in his chest.

By the last cycle Cyno only knows that he will be one day taking Alhaitham's soul to the underworld. As any other soul. 

Nobody could predict, that this time around Alhaitham could actually see him. No humans can actually see Cyno. He only appears as the death takes over; clad in the robes made of twilight, splitting the sky. 

So how could Alhaitham see him? It just happened. And Alhaitham is unrelenting, he is curious, he's a researcher. He wishes to know the guide from the underworld himself after witnessing him over and over. 

And like magnets, yet again they meet and orbit around each other. 

And then he remembers. He remembers it all, back to the beginning, back to thousands years before, back to all the lives he lived. He remembers it all, but he now knows Cyno does not. And he can only wonder why, Cyno can't tell him. Here they are strangers; not even existing on the same path. Because one day he will die, and who knows of Cyno? Will he continue his neverending duty? He seemed content when they spoke.

But Alhaitham is selfish, terribly selfish. And he can't stand that once again they will be separated, he might even fight the god of the underworld for it. 

So on his own he embarks to the underworld, to meet the god himself. 

Hermanubis is welcoming him. Inviting. To sit and speak. Afterall, Alhaitham is one who stopped origin of corruption and is in a way frequent visitor to the underworld. 

And what is there to hide at this point? The deal he made with Cyno is revealed. 

How Cyno decided to always bring Alhaitham back, to cleanse his soul in return for his memories. No matter how long and how painful.

And then, Hermanubis asks. What will Alhaitham do now?

i feel like people got so weird about age gaps in this very abstract sense that now there's this taboo about being friends with someone who's a few years older or younger than u....like, i have friends in their 70s and i have friends in their early 20s and im always friendly with teenagers & kids too because they all deserve to have adult friends in their lives who they can trust! other people projecting their gross shit onto those friendships is not my problem

Ranking Fire emblem Three Houses characters according to their English translation accuracy

So yeah, I’ve been translating this game for a while now and this is my conclusion. Also this in an easy accession point to all my translations. Just click the character’s name to see the translations of your chosen character.

A tier

Includes most of the characters, majority of them from Golden Deer’s which is interesting. There is also Dimitri and Dedue who are accurate until the time skip.

B tier

Majority of these characters that speak in keigo 敬語, the most formal way of speech in Japan. Some characters like Flayn and Rhea the translation comes through while characters like Hubert lack a certain edge without the refined speech. Sothis also speaks in an ancient way, referring to Byleth with an old way to say you onushi  御主 and referring to her self with washi  儂 which is an old way to refer to oneself also Hanneman uses it.

C tier

People in this category have small changes made to them. 

Claude actually uses sensei  先生  (teacher, instructor) or as is translated to professor just like everyone else when speaking to Byleth but with a slight change of tone, which is why I see no problem with them changing it to more playful ’’teach’’. Also after time-skip he uses the word kyoudai  兄弟 (sibling, sibling-in-law, mate or a friend) to refer to Byleth. I find it has the same vibes when yakuza can use brother to refer to their close clan mates, thus I think it’s a reference to Claude’s culture somehow.

Ferdinand actually is more of an aggressor between him and Hubert’s support link. Hubert says he doesn’t mind eating lunch with him and Byleth and Ferdinand is the one making things difficult thus he should stay silent. After time skip Ferdinand doesn’t shout dramatically ‘’no…!’’ when he learns his father is dead, but just says to himself ‘’could it be…?’’

Caspar’s lines are changed when interacting with Petra. During the introduction to the Black Eagles Caspar says something likes to  ’’I can take Byleth on bare handed’’, to which Petra asks ‘’Bare handed? You want Professor strip their gloves off?’’ To which Caspar states it was just a metaphor for combat.

Ingrid’s interaction with Sylvain during their C support have been changed.

Edelgard’s changes are subtle are only amplified after time skip. The small changes of her wording make her seem more cold and dismissive than she originally was.

Male Byleth interaction with Sylvain is changed. More could have been changed as I played in English with Japanese voices, but this one stuck up.

Multiple time skip Dimitri’s conversations have been altered. In Japanese he shows much more clear signs of paranoia and seeing things that don’t exist, speaking to Byleth after their first meeting as if they are just one of his hallucinations.

Dedue’s line when sacrificing himself for Dimitri is altered. He says ‘’I will always stay by your side, even with the distance of death separating us.’’ while in the translation he just says how Dimitri will be a good king, which is much more inpersonal.

Balthus and Byleth’s C support is altered. Where Balthus gratefully accepts Byleth’s offer to protect him and Balthus says ‘’Don’t mind me sticking to your side then.’’ in the translation he is made much more casual about it, removing the vulnerability of the conversation.

Miklain’s conversation with Sylvain is changed. This is actually the first time gendered language is used as an insult which made me suspicious.

Death knight’s English translation is much more dramatic than in the original. He is a quiet menacing and speaks rarely which leaves on impression of power.

D tier 

The queer context removed gang! Here is supports between Annette and Mercedes, Leonie and Lysithea, and Edelgard and Dorothea.

E tier

These characters change a lot between the original and the translation.

Bernadetta is much more stuttering and less panic talk in the original. Also in her and Felix’s C suppport Felix notes feeling her emit sakki  殺気 (bloodlust) when escaping from him. 

Felix is much more caring in Japanese, more blunt and not actually vicious. I’m planning on translating his and Ingrid’s B support which also shows this.

Edelgard’s time skip changes can be summarized with her support with Hubert. She emotes much more and shows great care for him and actually laughs with him.

So Randolf in the original speaks of doing things for his family while in the English side it’s changed to doing it for honor? Really now? You don’t want to empathize with the enemy English translation? And an NPC. Really?

So Hapi and Yuri, have an altered comments for when Jeralt dies. Yuri also doesn’t call Byleth a friend but anta あんた a more casual version of anata 貴方 which is usually translated to dear, darling, honey or something close to that.

Manuela 

So she gets a a tier of her own for her altered B support with Cyril.  The original support made me disgusted of her and happy there is no A support between them. Click her name if you want to read it, but beware of the problematic elements related to alcohol and hints of grooming.

F tier

So here lay Cyril, Petra and Sylvain. The characters that I have most to say about translation vice. So these character’s are completely different between the translation and the original. I can only think of the reason for Cyril and Petra’s change in speech style coming from translator’s internalized racism. 

Cyril has no accent and actually speaks very politely, on many occasions using desu/masu です/ ます   which is polite speech below keigo but above casual speech. Closest I can refer to how he would speak in English would be Dedue. He also speaks about tolerating his work rather than enjoying it. He also speaks less about Rhea and more about himself as individual, how he is extremely loyal, and how he enjoys when people can depend on him and how Tomas was one of those people that weren’t racist against him and how he feels conflicted with his own feelings and stance of the church, but resolves himself to listening Rhea as he feels in debt to her.

Petra speaks in a very clear Japanese with sometimes a little odd word order and only stumbles in metaphoric speech usually taking it literally. She is a good representation of how learning another language works, and once being told something is a metaphor she asks what it means as she will later start using said phrases. Instead in the translation she speaks like illiterate which is kind of reminiscence how Gonta from Danganronpa V3 was translated. 

(Somehow these characters are always people of color, I sure wonder why~)

Here is translated Petra and Cyril’s C support for evidence.

And then there is Sylvain… What have they done to you my boy. Translation reduces him to comic relief while he has a lot of trauma with the abuse from Miklain, to a possible sexual assault or some other trauma concerning a lot of women, as he speaks of women as ants who surround him or how he fears and hates them. All this tells that his flirty demeanor is but a defense mechanism and a self-destructive one at that. It reflects real life of how it’s common for those sexually abused to become hypersexual as a result to try to cope with their trauma’s lack of consent, ( but this is just how interpret it.) All these conversations of Sylvain trauma are cut and can be found translated by me in Sylvain and Mercedes support chain.

Translated Edelgard and Hubert A support

* Because this is written with hiragana and not kanji,  あくまで  , thus I cannot interpret if Hubert says which of the three things; ‘’Until I became evil/wicked /  悪 まで ’’ or ‘’I’m a demon/devil and /  悪魔 で ’’ or ’’Until my bitter end / 飽くまで ’’. Went with the middle ground on combining the first two lines when translating it. The official translation lacks this line entirely, and I’m not sure if it might be because of this very reason, they also couldn’t decide what to translate this as.

** Other way to say translate this line would be ’’If I come first in your thoughts, so do I think of you first,’’ but it lacks Edelgard’s request that Hubert would allow her to do so. It took me the whole day to come up with this English translation so I understand why the official translation on the time limit couldn’t linger on this line for too long- Yet the official line ‘’If I’m truly the center of your world, then I wish you would trust me as well as I trust you’’ doesn’t convey at all how Edelgard cares for Hubert. They both think of each other as the most important thing and it really doesn’t come through in the official translation.

Actually in the official translation they have made all of Edelgard’s lines more cold, cruel and less caring. When Edelgard says originally ‘’she could have Hubert executed’’ in the English translation she says ‘’’she can execute him’’ increasing the severity of the threat. Also in the translation she say goes on about ‘’Hubert’s presence and capabilities’’ when in the original she goes as far as to say ‘’I care about you Hubert. Just you.’’’ and doesn’t list any trait she values. In the original Edelgard also emotes more as you can see with how she words things much more casually or sighs when Hubert remains secretive.

Also Hubert’s speech style is nearly impossible to translate to English version, so I’ll try to explain the nuance of it. He speaks in Keigo  / けいご , the highest form of formal and polite speech, and on top of that he has a tendency to end his sentences with affirming questions. -What I mean to say his speech is incredibly pleasant to listen to, so it serves as a brilliant contrast to his cold and murderous personality, adding to the duality of his character. (What I mean to say is please listen to the Japanese VA of Hubert, the ancient and polished vampire vibes are strong.)

In the original Hubert’s and Edelgard’s deep bond really come through.

Also what kind of love Hubert means is not specified in Japanese when in the official translation they say ’’romantic love’’. Hubert says in Japanese ‘’the person I think about = 想 い 人’’ which means ‘’loved one, lover, sweetheart’’ which is accompanied with dramatic hand wave after he reveals it to Edelgard. 

I find it cute how both of them are laughing in the end, when in the official translation they made Edelgard say a cold line or a two about being surprised? Which is just another weird translation to add dialogue when there is none.

Me at all the people who call Traveler ships pedophilia:

You guys keep throwing around these words like hot potatos and it's high key concerning.

This is what the dictionary states:

Keyword, "children".

Even if you're in the camp that Traveler is a minor, they're NOT a prepubescent child (which is the age group pedophiles are attracted to); so you can't use that argument when trying to argue against pairings. You don't have to demonize things and call them what they are not in order to speak in protest of them. And before you accuse me of bias, I actually straight up don't care about most of the Traveler pairings (and some of them I don't like at all because I interpret the relationships as familial, like with Diluc and Kaeya; I see them as big brothers to the Traveler, same with Jean and Lisa, they're the big sisters), or even find them just overrated, so I'm not really defending them here. All I'm saying is that if you're going to speak out, please at least use the proper language.

I for example don't like Chilumi because Childe literally tries to physically harm her, says he's okay with her drowning along with the rest of Liyue and then afterwards acts like "awww come on don't be mad i didn't have anything against you" like. No. You tried to kill me, you bastard. And potentially thousands of other people. That happened, it's canon, and nobody can argue with that. But to say it's pedophilia is literally just wrong. If you don't like Chilumi or it makes you uncomfortable, that's OKAY! But don't undermine your arguments by calling it what it is not.

By the way, this isn't coming from a place of anger or feeling like "oh my god you guys are so dumb shut up" it's out of concern that y'all are just throwing these words around. Pedophilia is a very serious thing and you need to be careful what you declare is such.

Been seeing people arguing a lot about this and that's my two cents.

TDLR; it's okay to be uncomfortable with these pairings and avoid them/speak out on things you find problematic but you need to stop demonizing them and accusing them of being what they aren't. It's also okay to not have a "good reason" for disliking them. "I just don't like this" is a valid answer to "Why don't you like it?" Sometimes we just don't vibe with things and it's nothing to be ashamed of.
