“Yes it is. I couldn’t have said it better myself.” Zia agreed. “What’s the harm in being nice? You make other people’s day better and in return feel good yourself knowing you’ve done some good. I don’t understand people who can just be mean spirited for the hell of it.”

When you made observation a side hobby, your senses got sharp. She could focus on her companions words, but still note that the staggering steps behind them had slowed. Which was good. Emma’s hand was on her bag, ready to grab for phone or pepper spray if they needed it. “I recommended both,” she answered softly. “I grew up in New York, it was kind of a right of passage to get that first little pepper spray bottle to put on your keychain. But it’s good to know how to throw a punch too, just in case.”
Zia. Emma liked names, she liked to hear them and then try and guess why they’d been given that name. Zia was uncommon, unique, it sounded soft and invitingly mysterious all at once. “Nice to meet you, I’m Emma,” she answered with a genuine smile. “
“Well Emma, I will take your word for it an invest in some quality time watching a few youtube videos on how to properly incapacitate a drunk man.” Zia said with a smile, thinking it kind of funny if ever in the future they had to use whatever techniques they would learn. “What made you leave New York and come here? Normally everyone is trying to do the opposite, aren’t they? You’ve gone and done everything backwards.”

Caleb nodded his head, not liking the sound of that. If there was one thing he couldn’t stand, it was people overstepping their boundaries and this guy certainly was. “Sounds like a complete moron then,” he responded, shaking his head. “Some people really have no idea how to take no for an answer. And don’t worry about it, honestly, happy to help.”
“What a world we live in eh?” Zia sighed. “Sadder even to say that these things are just an almost natural part of our lives that some of us are used to it, or taught to travel in groups and make sure someone knows where you are at all times. It’s enough to drive anyone crazy I reckon. Have you lived here long? Is this area notorious for being sketchy? Or am I just unlucky?”

“You sound like someone who’s been there-done that,” Leah mused, fingers tangling in her hair absent mindedly. She didn’t mean to be nosey, but there had always been that small desire to get more out of someone. Even if there was no reason for it. “Who’s lingering in your past then?”
“That is a long story.” Zia mused, then shook their head. “Well, actually it’s not, but I feel compelled to say that as it happened a long time ago, and like I said, it’s not really over yet.” They looked over at the red haired woman and smiled a little. “It’s a little gruesome too, to be honest.” they added, not sure if that would make the woman more or less curious.

“I got told they had rats,” Malachy said, the words leaving him before he thought of what he was insinuating. “Got warned off the place my first week here actually. By the guy of the Indian take-away, now I think about it.” Pausing for a second, he added, “I’ll need to give those tempura rolls though, since you don’t look like the type of person to live with rats.”
A laugh escaped the Irishman at their questions and he shook his head. “Do I sound like a local to you?” He grinned before shaking his head. “Never been one for nightclubs, myself. What about you? You make a habit of frequenting Tidal every weekend?”
Zia grimaced a little, then laughed. “I haven’t heard about the rats myself. Now you’ve got me second-guessing every meal I’ve ever eaten there. And no, you’re right, you’ve definitely got a foreign twang. I’m still trying to get used to the dialects myself. I’m from a small town. Maybe smaller than this, I’m not sure. But I haven’t been exposed to that many accents really. This corner of the world everyone sounds a bit daft. Myself included I’m sure.” she said with a grin. “As for Tidal, well, let’s say I’ve been a few times.” they admitted. “I have to make the most of the late hours any way I can. There’s not a lot of places open this late as I’m sure you know.”

“I feel exactly the same way! I believe that by buying items from people I keep the local economy going in some way. Because then they have money to go spend it somewhere else.“
“You really are a good samaritan aren’t you?” Zia said, smiling at the woman. “Saving me and this small town. You need an award for best citizen. We should call the mayor.”

A snort of laughter escaped Leah at that, the redhead clutching her hands to her face in embarrassment. “Sorry, yeah, that is awkward,” she replied. He was a very old dog, though,” she shrugged, as though that explained it all. “But you’re right. You are. And it’s not like I have a million people to block…”
“Yeah, plus there’s nothing worse than having your whole day ruined after glancing at one picture on instagram. The worst is knowing there’s no logical reason to be upset about the people in your past, and even if you try your hardest to move on, they still manage to linger around somehow.”

The thought of being followed was one that plagued Malachy and was, more often than not, the reason he wandered the streets at ridiculous times of the evening and so it was without hesitation that he agreed to walk with the stranger. “Don’t be daft,” he replied, his jaw set as he glanced behind them once more, cursing the weird guy who had caused distress. He was no angel himself, but thankfully, understanding the word ‘no’ had always come fairly easy. “I’ll come with you. Make sure you’re alright.”
The commenbt about girls following him out of pubs soon had him laughing though, quietly under his breath. “Oh aye, every Friday night there’s a harem following me back up to Tall Oaks,” he responded, half wishing it were the case. “But eh, talking of the Oaks, where is it you’re headed?” As they walked away from the bus shelter, Malachy glancing back one last time, he added, “I’m Mal, by the way.”
“Zia.” they replied, giving Mal a kind smile as they kept up with him. “And just up Main Street a little way. Above that sushi place, you know the one with the really good tempura rolls?”
Zia shoved their hands into their jacket pockets as they walked, deciding from now on that in the winter months they needed to avoid staying out late as much as possible as it was too damn cold. “You go out much then?” Zia asked, glancing back up at Mal. “You a local?”

For reasons that she could never find a logical answer for, Emma liked being the last one to leave the bakery at night. She’d hum quietly to herself as she wiped down counters, pulled the waste, and got things settled for the morning crew. The night didn’t scare her as she locked the door. After all, she’d grown up a New Yorker, and that had meant nighttime walks on her own when she was only thirteen and jonesing for skittles from the convenience store down the street. Quiet she was, shy definitely, but unable to handle herself? Definitively not.
Eyes narrowed and she took a protective stance when she heard someone calling out. Emma’s stance relaxed when someone approached. She took the span of two heartbeats to process the request, and then smiled, leaning in to give the other blonde a hug, voice carrying as she ushered a faux greeting. “Hey there you are! I thought you were going to meet me at my place.” She looped her arm through the other woman’s and began making slow and casual steps along the sidewalk. “He’ll probably go away now that he’s outnumbered. If he doesn’t we’ll stop in somewhere crowded. Sound good?”
Even though Zia had requested to play along as this woman’s friend, they were still a little startled at how well she started acting. But Zia was also very relieved that she obliged to help, as they certainly didn’t want to have to jog all the way home just to get away from some drunk loser. “Thanks a lot.” Zia said in hushed tones, starting to walk with the woman further up the block. “I know every town has its weirdos, but it’s another thing entirely to have to put up with them. I might have to buy pepper spray or something. Or take self-defence classes.” Zia glanced over their shoulder back at the man who seemed to slow his staggered pace, clearly about to give up on the pursuit, though he did whistle and holler a few times. “I’m Zia, by the way.” they said, looking back at the woman. “If we’re in on this stunt we should probably at least know each other’s names.”

“One of the hottest places in the states.” Autumn commented. “I didn’t want to stay in California my whole life so, I decided to move. It was half planned that I came out here. Where are you from?”
“That’s fair.” Zia nodded. “Good enough reason as any. I’m from Penarth, in Wales. Not a very interesting place at all, so getting away from everything I left behind, even if it was only to another small town, it’s nice.”

“It’s difficult, but luckily I make enough money to keep the odd item,” she smiled, “I used to visit in the holidays. My grandparents lived here and my parents were both born here. But I moved myself ten years ago when I took over the shop from my grandparents. The shop itself has been around since 1967.“
“Oh wow. That’s so great you’re keeping it going. I’m a fan for supporting local businesses. Especially in small towns where often families rely on it. We don’t need those conglomerates like Walmart or Target moving in and ruining business. Small businesses like this make these towns what they are, so I admire what you’re doing.”

“That must be fun. I’ve been trying to be sociable while trying to avoid getting with the wrong crowd again. Seems there’s a fine line between the two sometimes.”

“Sure. I was getting a little hungry,” Ana gave a small smile. “What’s your name, by the way?”
“I’m Zia. Weird name, I know. I stick out enough as it is sometimes.” they laughed. “What about you? What’s your name and what do you do and all that?”

“Oh,” Autumn exclaimed. “That’s not to terribly far.” She was glad the other girl didn’t live far away, wanting to decrease the chance of getting lost or followed. “No, I’m from LA in California.” She explained.
“California? Oh I’m jealous.” Zia said. “What brought you from somewhere cool to a small place like this?”

“Is it ever worth it?” Leah asked though, truthfully, she had never done something like that before. She liked to think she was smarter than that, most of the time. “Oh he’d moved on. But so have I, really. Most of the e’me I just looked at pictures of his dog, but he’s dead now.”
“Oh. That’s a bit awkward.” Zia said slowly, then grinned again. “The best thing to do would be to block your ex’s I suppose. Stop yourself from the temptation of looking back. Looking back only gets you in trouble I find.”
