We got an incredible response thus far on our interest check and have noticed many new faithful join us in this hallowed endeavor. It is with great joy we are announcing that the Zine Of Tide And Flesh will continue for its second year thanks to all you lovely people!
Deadline for the submissions is july 15th.
We are extremely excited to be hosting this Zine again, last year offered an incredible opportunity for this small community of ours to come together, and we are hopeful that this year will be the same. May there be new connections forged and old precious memories unearthed from the silt.
This year we are doing things a little different. Rather than reservations and the Terrible Time Crunch we are instead going to redirect you to a Sign Up form to ensure your spot on the Zine and so that we will have clear numbers: you will have until the 20th of June to sign up! So don't forget to complete the form which you can find here:
The second year anniversary of the river's rising is fast approaching siblings! Cast your names into the depths to secure your spot in the z
Rejoice siblings! The River Rises, yet again!
look out for another special announcement soon ;)
& A quick refresher on the way it works under the cut!
What are we doing?
We are a group of TSV fans wanting to create something special for the two year anniversary of the final episode. With the anniversary being on July 22nd, this time we are Not on a pretty tight deadline, so you can plan your work accordingly!
What can I submit?
You can submit basically anything, be it art, writing or even music, as long as it’s centered around TSV. It doesn’t have to relate to the finale, but it will definitely be welcome and very thematically appropriate.
How long is the submission period?
Since this is still a chill project we are taking art submissions until the 15th of July. We need a bit of buffer to put the whole thing together and format it properly + gather last call submissions.
(A note on the latter — please inform us in advance if you would like to submit something past the deadline, so we know we need to leave a space for your work in the zine, as it would be quite complicated to reformat the whole thing last minute)
How does the submission work?
Once you've signed up with the form above and finished your contribution you can send us an email over at [email protected] including your name+ username you provided on the form in the subject of the email and your finished work.
When will the zine come out?
We will publish it on July 22nd! We would also like to kindly ask you to refrain from posting your submissions online before the zine comes out.
What happens if I don't make it to the deadline and have not been able to secure my spot in advance, but still want to participate?
We will be glad to share your work on the zine's tumblr once the deadline passes for main submissions.
Where can I find more info and ask questions?
We have a dedicated Discord server that you can join via the following link.
Our asks are also open on this account, so if you don’t feel like chatting with people directly, feel free to send an ask our way!
We're looking forward to receiving your wonderful submissions and celebrating this very special date with all of you. The river rises!
This year alongside the regular vertical a5 pages we decided to also include two-page spreads. However these spaces are limited - 7 (due to the zine's design).
If you'd like for your piece in the zine this year to be a horizontal one, reserve one of the 7 spots in channel #reservations (in category - submissions) on our discord server!
Please keep in mind that given limited amount of such artworks and the space they take up, we set up few rules:
- the piece has to be digital or really well photographed
- has to stick to the dimensions: 3508 x 2480
- can't be a sketch or an unfinished piece
! Don't worry if you had already filled out the submission form by checking the a5 format artwork, it won't interfere if you decide to switch to a horizontal spread !
my contribution for @zineoftideandflesh! Feel pretty happy with it considering I was moving apartments while working on it so happy belated siltversary everyone the river rises
"What am I seeing?" cried her mother. "I do believe that I saw pearls and diamonds dropping out of your mouth? What have you been doing, my daughter?" (This was the first time she had ever called her her daughter.)
—Les Fées, Charles Perrault
Artwork submission for @zineoftideandflesh, comparing VAL's different selves through the two sisters in the fairytale Les Fées to explore speech, value, and her relationship with her mother.
Some details about the fairytale allusion:
The cursed daughter, who was supposedly favoured by her mother, had been forced to visit the fairy at the well in hopes of attaining the blessing of speaking in jewels, and was later abandoned for her curse. I cast her as VAL who is birthed of her former self's decision to join the military to become someone who would gain her mother's favour, and to highlight the abandonment she experienced during her transformation. Her speech comes to life in indiscriminate violence, lashing out as wild animals, ultimately robbing her own voice.
The mistreated daughter on the other hand was awarded with the 'blessing' of producing jewels — but within the fairytale, she was never able to use the ability for herself. Instead, her reward amounts to gaining the favour of others (her mother, the prince) through her ability to produce value for them, at great discomfort for herself, choking out sharp edged jewels whenever she tries to communicate. I cast her as the former self of VAL, as the daughter who yielded to her mother out of a desire for validation that never came, who signed away her body to create and become value, in various respects.
The false dichotomy of the blessing and the curse (which both rob them of speech), the favoured and mistreated daughter (both abandoned), the false competition that these characters are placed in as fairytale archetypes represent also VAL's divided, antagonising sense of self.
I will be hallowed, but not for them.
I will die. I will not die.

Wearing herself badly
General content warnings: loss of sense of self
She thought, naively still after all this time, that the wound from the bullet would be the worst of it. That she got away. That when a god of the dead said she would die underneath the tree, she could walk away.
It starts small. She is after all alone, with no company, and it is only as she meets people willing to help a stranger that she realises her names are gone. Or. Not gone, they are still there, but ill-fitting. Chafing. Mallory Glass was not a name she used often, but the loss of Em’s sister still hurts. Carpenter fits better, in the broad strokes, but it is too tight and too loose in all the wrong places. Blisters form when she uses it too long. Eventually she stops, starts using the names of strangers. She has still not found one that fits the way it should.
The first time she walks past a café selling pancakes (thick, not crêpes) a sadness wells up in the absence of joy. She still orders. They taste like ash in her mouth.
After that, other things make themselves known, and she discovers herself in what she no longer is. She avoids mirrors. She caught a glimpse of her reflection once, and it was not her own eyes that looked back. Her skin gets rashes from eating shellfish. She doesn’t wake up with the taste of water and silt in her mouth.
She is terrified of any body of water larger than a teacup.
Not everything has changed, and she cries when she has her first sip of the cappuccino. She still knows how to drive, and makes the most of it travelling in the direction of the house on the cliffs with the woman in the chair on the second floor, and a promise she is unsure she will keep. There is nowhere else she can go, but she is not in a hurry. Being twice dead, she figures she can take what time she needs.
And it would be easier, she thinks, if she didn’t know who she used to be. If she did not live in the ruins of her former self. Ingrained memory fighting the conscious brain. But. She is learning. Sets alarms where she used to wake up without one. Puts meat and cheese on her bread. Initiates conversation.
Despairs when another familiar comfort is neither of those. Or when something new feels old. But she moves through it, starts to understand her new self. It is not a harmonious coexistence, her past and current self, and she is not herself in a shape she can recognise, but she lives. And that must be enough
