So, it's widespread, enjoyable fanon that dwarf hair (head and beard) and braids are Important and Intimate and have particular meaning to them. And of course, the other races know little to nothing about this beyond the surface level.
I love seeing this, in whatever form it takes. I've often seen it where Bilbo accidentally touches a dwarf’s hair (usually Thorin's 😉). And has to have the Implications explained, that You Don't Do That. 😬😆
And I think I've seen a little bit of the idea that hobbits are similar, but with their feet hair specifically. As in, it's important, and should be well-maintained for appearances or be judged. And also, that touching it is generally reserved for family or partners.
But I don't think I've seen yet, and would love to, as a reversal of the first trope:
One of the dwarves accidentally, or at least without knowing the Implications, touches Bilbo's feet hair. And gets a lecture. 🤣
Maybe one of them, especially one of the younger ones, is curious about the differences between dwarves and hobbits. 👀 And just. Touches it. To satisfy that curiosity. 😆
Or it could really just be an accidental thing. From close quarters, around the fire or laying out to sleep or as they're walking or such. A casual touch without thought. (Though if done by certain dwarves, the second turns a little bit into the first, again out of confusion and curiosity.)
Either way, Bilbo is physically and mentally taken aback, and acts accordingly. Gives them the Middle Earth equivalent of "At least buy me dinner first, you pervy weirdo!" 😯
When it's clear that this particular dwarf, along with the rest of them, have No Idea about this, Bilbo clarifies the confusion. If the first part is still true, about dwarf hair, they can bond about how this is the same, though also different.
The dwarves do their best to accommodate Bilbo and his feet. Maybe some mutterings/jokes about hobbits and their Weird Feet thing. But no worse than Bilbo dishes out about how Weird dwarves are. 🤣
Bagginshield option, because of course: Would be funny if it is Thorin who does the accidental Foot Touch, and the Future King of Erebor gets told off by his burglar. 😆 Maybe he already has a Thing for Bilbo by then, though he would never say so. The Touch was legitly unrelated to those feelings. But, now that he knows what feet and foot hair mean to hobbits, Thorin Oakenshield is now having Thoughts about Bilbo and his feet. 😯😳😉😆
