Bob Marley was an activist. He fought for unity of the African diaspora. Making him into a snapchat filter distorts his legacy and turns him into a caricature. There was so much more to Bob Marley than weed. Reducing him to just that is racist.

on this 4/20, let’s think about how bob marley has been reduced to a stereotype around weed and “one love” instead of the revolutionary figure he really was. he advocated for revolution and change against a racist political system in jamaica. he was also a staunch anti imperialist, and criticized white imperialism. he didn’t just smoke weed all day and sing catchy songs. i truly hate the liberal cleansing of revolutionary figures because it turns them into a caricature which erases their political stances and beliefs from the public mind completely

Using Bob Marley as 4/20’s mascot is also the reason why every West Indian and Caribbean is generalized and made into this singular body. This is why our culture is viewed as inferior by outsiders as well and stripped of all the rich history of perseverance from colonialism and slavery. This makes it seem like life in the Caribbean and West Indies is a vacation and perfect. Its a place where you can get away from the real world when in actuality it isn’t like that at all!!!
