Vessel because i love my blorbo
okay, so like, you are more than welcome to call me insane and say that i am reading way too deep into this, but i think it makes sense
i think this specific egg is meant to represent susie. we first need to establish that eggs in deltarune are a metaphor for love. i hope this is commonly accepted enough to where i dont have to detail every single instance of that connection in this post (though i would love to and have plans to make a specific doc for something involving this, i just dont want to open that can of worms in this simple of a post...
but, just to get the ball rolling, here are some key examples:
we first see this from asgore's fridge in ch1 if you did not get the egg from the forgotten man. the word "egg" here can be replaced with "love" in regards to his divorce, how toriel no longer loves him the way she used to, but he still clings on as we can blatantly see through "coincidentally" running into her at the supermarket, repeatedly trying to give her flowers (that she throws away), and hiding in the bushes to ambush her after church to spark a conversation. his love is now solitary and unreciprocated. he is romantically alone.
there is also this whole interaction. toriel and sans are flirting with each other here, exchanging egg puns that coincide perfectly with the love symbolism, they share their love with one another. and, of course, as to be expected, asgore busts in with his own, trying to insert his love into toriel's life even when she is having fun with someone else.
the last example i will provide for this post is the pipis, explicitly stated by tenna to be an egg as he shoots it in his feature presentation, and is directly connected to spamton. this accentuates their past partnership, whether you want to look at it from a romantic lense or not. if you dont have the dealmaker, aka spamton, in ch3 for the special cutscene, a pipis falls out of the closet, and tenna gets humiliated by an audience.
he "saved one", he still holds some love for spamton, even if he has it buried away in the definitely inconspicuous closet that is definitely not supposed to evoke tenna being a closeted gay man. and if you do have the dealmaker, spamton comes out of your inventory, notices the pipis and states that tenna "really does care" because he still has it. he still has a small remnant of their love.
okay! i hope those examples were loaded enough to be at least on board with me. now we can actually get into the egg i mentioned...
the "black-and-white", monochrome, a beginning state where you have not yet been "colored in with care", is very much what susie's character is at prior to her first dark world. in ch3, she states that she never really had any friends, how she felt like "a broken toy nobody wanted", and thus did not have the capacity to accept or feel love externally. the egg being "hardboiled" sends this home: susie was a hard, unopened barrier, a guarded wall that she refused to let down because it was impossible for someone else to truly love her, and what was the point in trying when she would move houses soon anyways?
the "feeling of pity" is pretty textual as well. if you try to leave the school or head towards the baby classroom, she talks all tough and insults kris before realizing that she actually doesnt want to do what she says she would. this doesnt at all negate her prior bullying, but we can at least notice that she feels bad for kris in some capacity.
this also ties into how she feels like their mother is almost "too good" for them, with a hint of jealousy for how "coddled" kris must be at home, a contrast to her own clearly unstable and neglectful home life.
note: i am aware that toby said the arg wasnt canon content, but that doesnt mean the characterization is completely irrelevant. he chose to write it like this for a reason, and it already goes perfectly along with the high standard and infallible perspective that susie has for toriel.
this little tidbit is essentially susie saying (through clear projection) that temmie wont be able to "come out of her shell", she wont be able to "love" or "hatch" into someone that is not a surface level asshole.
and guess what... the hardboiled egg comes back in susie's room at queen's mansion! the once monochrome egg is now painted, it has been "colored in with care" by kris, ralsei, lancer, and the other darkners she has met along the way. the egg is "warm" because so is susie. though notes of her cold attitude still cut through, she has still had some solid character growth as she accepts herself with other people, finally able to make friends, to love and be loved for who she is.
In conclusion this was my dope ass analysis post. Looks like im all out of paper so I guess this is The End
Mirror, mirror, on the edge of existence.
In case you think otherwise about the meaning of the art. No. Dirk didn't kill Bro. He is already dead and thats it. I have to put it here because it seems like even putting in the comment won't work.
Little comic thingy (actually the first comic I've ever done lol) based on Device Theory and the idea that DEVICE_FRIEND is just Gaster's anti-Annoying Dog OC

i really enjoy how absent yet present toriel is with kris, where she clearly recognizes something is off about them, reaching out to the hospital specifically about health concerns, perhaps tying into the unknown of what is "typical" for human behavior since 99.9% of hometown is populated by monsters,
and alphys where its hard to pinpoint an origin when kris has always been a weird little freak, yet abstains from asking kris themself about whats been going on lately, hoping that someone else can vouch
and even when she does point it out in front of them, its never actually addressing the issue or asking her child whats wrong like she should be doing as their parent, she instead chooses to brush it off and advise for them to "go to bed early" rather than have an actual conversation
she knows that kris spends a long time in the bathroom for seemingly no reason, where to us we can use context clues and assume that kris has either spent that time to rip the soul out in the past and do whatever or to wash their hands for way longer than is necessary,
she knows that kris has this glaring unaddressed bloodstain in the corner of their room next to a bird cage sat comfortably in a red wagon, the flavor text reading that it has "already seen a few crashes" and could possibly hint that toriel knows this as well,
she has clearly had to step in to be their partner on school projects which should not at all be the case if kris had actual friends,
she is so emotionally absent from kris that their relationship pretty much hinges on the pie that she makes for them, the pie symbolic of their dynamic as mother and child, and notably kris devours the entire thing in one sitting overnight, a representation of how hungry they must feel for toriel's love and care, especially when they know damn well that she will scold them for it in the morning
in contrast, the pie is brought up in ch2 but this time it becomes shared with susie as toriel offers to bake the pie together, to share the maternal love she has for someone else, a new friend of her adopted kid, but guess what happens? kris leaps out the window to slash toriel's tires, coincidentally also putting an end to the pie for tonight
in ch4, the diminishing of their connection is evident as toriel no longer has pie waiting for kris like usual, but pancakes, something "flatter" that is, of course, present when she is distracted by sans, the new guy in town that she has been flirting with in the supermarket
its incredibly interesting to me when toriel is at surface level seen as a warm and loving parent, and by no means am i arguing against that, but the evidence for her simultaneously being absent for kris in a way that she shouldnt, especially developmentally, really starts to pile up
all of this absent nature is perfectly encapsulated in ch3, when she is quite literally locked up and asleep for the entire dark world sequence, a dark world that was made by kris themself so naturally toriel wouldnt be involved in the actual plot or used as a supporting character of any kind because she prefers to remain blissfully ignorant
and it sucks because even if she did ask kris about whats up, its not as if they can really tell her anything, both because of the deep shit they have gotten themself into and because i doubt they are one to talk openly about their feelings no matter what, and on some level im sure that toriel is aware of how kris is about expressing emotions, but that does not mean she shouldnt try to help them at all
