Eva Trodd, ‘Time to Play’, January 8th 2016, London

I’m gifting the audio, as unfortunately, Act One got completely overridden by Act Two… I’m super upset about it. This was my first time seeing the show and it was incredible. I’m sad I don’t have Act One to remember it by as well, though the last ten minutes or so of it are tagged on to the end of Act Two, including all of ‘Stick it to the Man’. I know for a fact there’s a full version in existence.

ava’s final naughty

not doing a full review of the last (and fourth-to-last, aka ava’s last) show(s), but i have to say, jennifer blood improved a LOT between october and the last few shows.

i still don’t like her voice, singing or speaking, but that’s still 1000% not her fault.  and her accent is still kind of all over the place, but seeing as how she’s had to perform first with the full accent, then no accent, then the “sort-of-british” broadway accent, i think i can’t really blame her.

still not the warmest miss honey, but i really, really ended up liking her acting.  she played her as really, really, socially awkward and painfully shy, which i can relate.  for example, usually during the little wave during pathetic, most miss honeys smile wide an pretend nothing’s wrong; jen blood ducked her head, looked away from the “person” she was waving at and barely acknowledged them.  she avoided eye contact with other characters a LOT.  i ended up loving the way she delivered “it is my intention to help this little girl, whether you like it or not.”  i loved the way she was so full of rage during the final classroom scene but was still so repressed she never raised her voice once.  the shyness made it more understandable that she’d seem a little cold; she just wasn’t really comfortable interacting with anyone, including matilda, and my god, the way she tried to smile and make “everything’s just great!” faces during my house, until she was turned away from matilda and just totally deflated, only to put the fake smile back on when she went back to her seat and was “talking” to matilda again?  damn well-executed.

and damned if i didn’t love how she started off bruce making “no, stop, you seriously don’t have to do this, this is a terrible idea” gestures at evan and ended it with these encouraging “you can do it, try it this way, you got this!” gestures and expressions.  it was just really endearing. 

still probably the weakest of the broadway miss honeys for me (i never saw ashley but have seen the others), but i did like her a lot more these last two shows. 

also can i just add how cute/awesome willow’s outraged faces while her father was bragging about cheating the russians were??  it was definitely the best performance i’ve seen from willow.  and i’m glad i got to see madison and trey once each before closing, though i do wish i’d seen trey as bruce.

some things that happened at Matilda Broadway [closing show] this afternoon

- like honestly so many former kids every where you turned and it was great - the show started like 20 minutes late… - entrance applauses for EVERY. SINGLE. CAST. MEMBER. i kid you not… and if you’re familiar with the show than you realize that pretty much all of Miracle was applauding - Geoff’s ‘Miracle’ riffs were incredible - honestly like the audience had so much energy and most of the cast couldn’t even keep a straight face they were so happy - ummm 'Loud’ happened and people went insane - screaming Telly - so many cast members cried during 'When I Grow Up’ - Bryce literally had the audience in the palm of his hand during 'Smell of Rebellion’ - standing ovation for 'Revolting Children’ and cheers for about 30 seconds - standing ovation for all of bows - executive producer gave 10 min speech and i cried for most of it - right next me in the isle were some of Team Tilda and Gia and they were all balling and my heart broke a little bit - lots of tears - people went crazy when Lesli came out the stagedoor jc - people also screamed for Travis and Phillip - every adult cast member came out the stagedoor except for Wesley, Jenn Bowles, and Karen

all in all it was a rly sad day but i am really glad i got to be there to experience it

Diamondelight92′s Big Fat Playbill Giveaway

The national tour of the Tony Award-winning musical Fun Home will star Kate Shindle ( Legally Blonde, Cabaret) as Alison, with Broadway cast member Alessandra Baldacchino as Small Alison and Abby Corrigan as Medium Alison. At certain performances, Carly Gold will play the role of Small Alison.

They will be joined by Robertf Petkoff ( Ragtime) as Bruce Bechdel, with Susan Moniz ( Grease!) as Helen Bechdel, Karen Eilbacher as Joan, Robert Hager as Roy, Lennon Nate Hammond as John, Pierson Salavdor as Christian, Anthony Fortino, Amanda Naughton, Sofia Trimarchi and Michael Winther.

The in-the-round Broadway staging will be re-conceived by director Sam Gold to play proscenium theatres across the U.S.

The Tony Award-winning musical by Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron—based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic-novel memoir—will end its Broadway run September 10 at Circle in the Square.

The unconventional show made history, becoming the first Broadway musical written by women to win the Best Musical Tony, and the first Tony-winning musical to have a lesbian as its main character. Tesori and Kron also won the Tony Award for Best Original Score. It won five Tony Awards in all, including Best Book (Kron) and Best Direction ( Sam Gold).

Here’s how it’s billed: “ Fun Home introduces us to Alison at three different ages, revealing memories of her uniquely dysfunctional family – her mother, brothers and volatile, brilliant, enigmatic father – that connect with her in surprising new ways. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.”
