Adult Jazz | Gist Is

hello! so last night, while playing minecraft, i listened to adult jazz's gist is! this album was recomended to me by my sister, while we were in a cd shop together :) adult jazz are an experimental band from england. theyve been active since 2010. the band consists of members from very different kinds of music, so the album has loads on influences from indie rock, electronic, and all other kinds of music! i believe this was their first album i really liked this album! something ive always wanted to hear more of is music in like free time, or non disclosed tempos. this album is filled with weird tempos and odd rhythms, that makes it sound very freeing, and gives it a very ambient feel to it! i think the vocals are really interesting. he uses lots of wordless phrases and noises to give the instrumental an extra layer, very similar to scatting. i also really enjoyed the instruments that weren't like, guitar, bass drums and synth. im pretty sure i heard a clarinet and a trumpet in a few songs, and i think they really help emphasise the weird, put together feel of the track i would say if you're not into ambient, or if you just desire a more "down-to-earth" song structure, then this album may not be for you. but i really enjoyed listening to it! its a very beautiful album, and more people should listen to weird music :) i think my favorite songs were probably "donne tongue", "spook" and "bonedigger", but its one of those albums that i gotta listen to a few more times before i can make sweeping desicions about. so yeah! go listen to it! :)

Nas | Illmatic

hello!!! so a while ago i listened to illmatic by nas! this album was actually recomended to me by one of my friends :) nas is a american rapper, who is best known for his work in the hip hop scene in 90s new york. honestly he doesnt need much introduction, as he has been cited as one of the most influential rappers of all time. i loved this album! i LOVED the sample work on all of the tracks, i especially love the hook on "memory lane" and i think it really gives this laidback, but also high energy feel to the whole album i also really enjoyed all of the jazz influence on all of the tracks! you can definetly hear it songs like "N.Y. state of mind", "The world is yours" and "memory lane". the piano sample in "N.Y. state of mind" also sounds so punchy and gives this kind of dark and creeping feel that layers over the vocals. i also think "The Genesis" is SUCH a good opener to the album. the song doesnt actually feature any rapping, and layers samples of a bunch of conversations over a sampled drum machine and bass guitar. this is going to be a little bit of music tech talk from me, but the bass and drums have had their low and high frequencies removed, which ends up giving them this really squashed tone, like they were recorded in a telephone, which adds to the lo-fi feel of the whole track. but yeah!! is good album!!! go listen!!! spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/3kEtdS2pH6hKcMU9Wioob1?si=8FVsVSpnTDSSUHb5B4a59A

Indigo Jam Unit | REALism

hello :) recently ive been listening to indigo jam unit's realism! indigo jam unit were a japanese indie jazz band based in osaka in 2005. the music is pretty niche, most of their records aren't on most streaming servicies, i had to listen to it from an mp3 rip from youtube. i loved this album! a lot of people tend to conflate jazz with calm, serene background music, but this album is anything but that. i think the opening track, adrenaline does such a good job of establishing this, as the bass and drums open fairly regulalrly, and then when the piano comes in it hits you like a TRUCK. i also really liked the latin influences, especially on the piano. it gave this really interesting feel to a lot of the melodies, which really shine through in songs like hyo-ten and matador. my favorite tracks are probably adrenaline, buffalo, and matador! so yeah! if you don’t use bandcamp, i’d really encourage you to spend some time there. there’s millions of artists on there putting out great material, a lot of which never even makes 1 sale, or breaks 10 plays

if you’re new to the site, the front page is a good place to start. you can pick a genre and scroll thru it. by default it puts popular stuff up front, but i’d suggest looking at new releases

most albums have a “music you’ll also love” section at the bottom of the page, so you can start from one thing and go down a rabbit hole. you can find whole scenes this way

or look at the genre tags that don’t show up on the front page! find a sub-subgenre and explore something you’ve definitely never heard before. what’s furrycore? dreamcore? post-hyperpop? progressive extreme metal? melodic juke?

bandcamp also tags music by location. what are ppl in your city making?

going out of your way to find new music can make an artist’s day, or turn you on to something you wouldn’t normally go for. think about it

i didnt mention one of the site’s biggest selling points, which is that the money u spend on there goes directly to the artist. bandcamp gets a 30% cut, which is beyter than any other deal out there. definitely better than the 99.99% cut spotify takes.

but that was on purpose. i wanna let ppl know that bandcamp is the place to be, as a music fan, if you want to hear underground independent music

bandcamp is kinda in danger of being only used by musicians. like an extension of the joke abt irl music gigs: it’s just a bunch of musicians handing each other 20 dollar bills.

to me, as someone who loves the wierd, edgy side of electronic music, bandcamp is more than that. it’s where u go to be part of music scenes in the internet era. especially post 2020

Brian Eno | Ambient 1: Music for Airports

hello! yesterday on the train ride home i listened to brian eno's ambient 1: music for airports! brian eno is a musician whos worked in a lot of different kinds of music genres, such as electronica, rock, pop, but hes best known for his ambient music works. hes a very infulential figure in all kinds of music, and while this album wasn't the first ambient record, it was the first record to be labelled as an ambient track in its time. i enjoyed this album! i dont listen to too much ambient music, and it was a little hard for me to get into, but i liked this album specifically. the album is 4 songs long, theyre all longer than 9 minutes, so it does feel a bit slow but i really like how different all the songs are. the first song features a piano as the lead instrument, and then is surrounded by synths, percussion instruments like xylophones and wood blocks. the second song is performed entierly by a large choir, with lots of different voices layering different harmonies over it the third track is a mix of the first and the second. it again features piano as a lead instrument, but there aren't any other instruments behind it, and the choir has returned to help fill in empty space. and then the fourth track is different from the last three, features a synth, with no other accompaniment. i do think the album could be a little hard to listen to, especially to someone like me who doesn't listen to a lot of ambient music. personally, i think the best time to listen to it is when your'e in transit, like on a train, or in a car, or (like the title suggests), in an airport. but apart from that, i really enjoyed it, and i think its a very beautiful album to listen to :) so yeah! go listen to it :3c spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/063f8Ej8rLVTz9KkjQKEMa?si=2sav405gQUGo7NZYrq4dxw

Kinoko teikoku | eureka

hi yall! today i listened to kinoko teikoku's eureka!

kinoko teikoku were a japanese shoegaze/art pop band based in tokyo. i believe this was their first full length album, though they had released some other material before.

i really liked this album! i dont listen to shoegaze all that much, but this album really sold me on it! lots of the songs on the track are very slow and deliberate, but theres also a few songs, such as 春と修羅 (haturoshura) which kicks so much ass :) my favorite songs on the track were probably 夜鷹 (night thoughts), 平行世界 (parallel world) and ミュージシャン (magician) also, as a music tech nerd, i LOVED this album. something that i really loved is that the vocalist has this style of half-whispering her vocal lines, and the vocals are also very heavily compressed, which makes the vocals sound so rich and warm :) the album is also just filled with all sorts of reverb, delay, and modulation effects that makes my heart go wild so yeah! go listen to it! spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/3PYWQo89juaAr0HooKtfEH?si=BjTHux0pSWy7wCnV0n4NLQ

Marina and the Diamonds | Electra Heart
