Nikolai made a noncommittal sound at the back of his throat.

“And also ordered the same shipment in the next three months.”

“Your point?” He said trying to sound bored with the correspondence he was writing.

“Unless you’re planning to defeat all our enemies under a mountain of sweets, why are you spending so much money on something so useless?”

Because you said that you liked those sweets sent by Ehri’s family, and I want to make you happy during this shit storm. 

“Has it ever occurred to you that part of my brilliant schemes could very well include a dinner party and a very large cake?”

She rolled her eyes, and he went back to his letter.

“Are you sure about this?” David asked as he supervised a group of the Materialki that were bent over countless of the Lantsov treasures. 

“We need to pull our funds from somewhere, and this’ll be something to tide us over or put up as collateral for some loans.” Nikolai waved his hand as if it all meant nothing. Except it did. His country was so broke and inching towards a very long fall. This was the only solution he came up with.

He had lived as an army runt for years and then spent the rest of his time living on a ship with dirty, smelly pirates. He could live without jewels in his cufflinks for a while.

“Keep the emeralds though.” Nikolai added as he watched one of the Grisha pull out a fingernail sized green gem from one of his mother’s many bracelets.

“Why?” David asked frowning.

“I was thinking of making them into earrings. I’d pierce my ears. Try to look a bit more roguish for the upcoming battle.” 

Nikolai grinned. David rolled his eyes. 

He was planning to make them into earrings. Just not for him.

The big difference is that Kaz treats the people loyal to him with respect and he protects his own. The Darkling throws Genya under the bus and doesn’t protect her from the king and queen. Kaz would never do that. He respects women and if he knew the king was assaulting her he would have intervened. The Darkling doesn’t give a shit about the other Grisha except for how they can serve him. Kaz says that but we all know he doesn’t really mean it. He cares about his crew.
