I will lose at lot of followers, but before you unfollow, block or whatever hear what I have to say. Because whenever this topic is brought up people seem to lose all sense of reality and logic. IMO the ‘major problems’ facing the world today, whether it be climate change, the super diseases, war and conflict, mass poverty or others, should not be charted against each other as more or less important but should be all tackled and prevented as much as we are able to. Yet most people disagree, saying some problems are more important and should be prioritised above others. So I’ll follow that logic in explaining what I am about to say: the actions of all animal exploitation industries are worse than anything humanity has faced. Here it goes: including the slave trades and even the holocaust. I said it.
Here’s my reasoning: humans have endured many horrific trials and the pain remains till this day BUT it is nothing compared to what animals have gone through. Were any people slaughtered by the BILLIONS PER DAY to be eaten? Were they force fed to point where they couldn’t even stand on their feet? Were they trapped in cages ALL their life? Did they go insane due to extensive confinement? Were their beaks seared off? Balls cut off? Babies ripped from their mothers umbilical cords and all? Were young males crushed to death because they could not make eggs? Was their skin ripped off WHILE ALIVE AND BREATHING to be turned into a coat? Were they injected with hormones? Burned by chemicals? Suffocated to death? Did they have no way of protest apart from their screams of excruciation?
Yet this is the reality for these living feeling creatures. EVERY DAY. They too had mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters. They too could feel love and happiness and sadness and pain and anger. They too had complex nuanced societies. They too were disabled, aneurotypical, and queer.
Surely by the ‘more important’ logic, animal welfare should be prioritised.
But they are not humans, so it doesn’t matter. They are ‘incomparable’. That’s the problem. We can continue to elevate some groups as more important than others, genders as more important than genders, races as more important than races, species as more important than species. We can also continue to promote the harm caused by this exclusivity and consequent discrimination.
OR we can extinguish these ideas of some problems being worse than others, and focus on making the world a better place. We are slowly getting there with equality of the genders, races, sexualities. We are still light years away from equality of the species.
As well as other things, end this institutionalized speciesism. I hate to break it to you but humans are not more important than animals. We really aren’t. Animals are also not more important than humans. Humans are still animals no matter how ‘advanced’ we get.
And if you will not be convinced that animals are as important as humans then at least consider your fellow humans. The acres of land rendered infertile due to overgrazing; the communities destroyed for farmland; the trillions of gallons of water used to feed animals we do not need to eat when the people we ‘care’ so much about have no access to clean water; climate change mostly caused by the methane of farm animals and the destruction of our planet and the people and animals that live in it. What’s more important your burger or 4,000 to 18,000 gallons of water?
Stop exploiting animals. End all types of unnecessary pain, suffering, death and discrimination, in all its forms.
