They are still 6 professionals who have to legally uphold their contracts and perform as professionals. How they chose to behave on a professional level (and when they’re on stage, that’s literally their job (as professionals) isn’t a reflection on what they may or may not be feeling on a personal level.

Why Your Favorite Writers are Worried About Notes/Feedback

I’ve noticed over the past several months an influx of writers passive aggressively (including myself) reblog posts about getting feedback or at least likes/reblogs on their stories. Here are the phases of being a fanfic writer on Tumblr from experience and observation:

You start out fresh. No one is expecting anything from you. Your stories are new. Your style is new. You’re excited to share your pride and joys. It’s fun.

You’ve been around for a while. There is now a small following. People are still finding your blog and stories for reasons stated above. You’re getting messages about your stories.

You feel like you’ve peaked. You have written that one or two stories that got a lot of attention. People still like/reblog your stories. There are not as many messages as before. Your blog is considered a “staple” for fanfic recommendations.

It’s been a couple years since you’ve started. Your activity has slowed down massively. You are no longer in fic rec posts or follow forevers. You’re desperately trying to scrape up some kind of story that will make readers go crazy over your blog again. You dabble in other types of content (gifs, edits, reactions, etc.) to spark something, anything. You rarely receive messages, only the occasional message with “when are you updating —-?” which at this point is poking an angry bear with a stick. Followers just expect your content. You don’t know what to do anymore.

It’s not that us writers don’t write for ourselves anymore. We want that same validation we received in the beginning, like we are creating things others also enjoy. The point of sharing our stories on here is to stir emotions, cause reactions, and most importantly entertain others. How are writers supposed to know when nobody let’s them know? It’s like a business: if no one is buying (leaving feedback/likes/reblogs/follows), we go out of business (stop writing). Don’t just browse (read), let them know you’re there. Many writers have already left because they feel like they’ve peaked or they don’t feel like they’re wanted anymore.
