The woods had a way of making everything louder and quieter at the same time.
Every snapped twig made everyone freeze, but the silence between those sounds felt endless.
You walked a few steps behind Robert, your backpack bouncing lightly against your shoulders.
He glanced over every few minutes—not because he thought you couldn't keep up, but because he always checked that you were still there.
When he caught your eye again, he smiled.
The kind that only you ever seemed to get.
"You doing okay?" he whispered.
You nodded. "Ask me again after another mile."
He let out a quiet laugh through his nose, trying not to make too much noise.
"You already have your own."
"So you're not carrying mine."
Robert sighed dramatically. "You never let me be heroic."
"You can be heroic later."
"I was hoping for sooner."
You bumped your shoulder against his as you walked beside him, earning another grin before the two of you fell back into step behind the others.
Later, Jed called for everyone to stop for a few minutes.
The group scattered quietly around the small clearing, drinking what little water they had and resting sore legs.
Robert dropped onto a fallen log beside you with a groan.
"I think these boots hate me."
"They've hated you since day one."
"They spend all day chasing after you too."
You laughed before covering your mouth, suddenly remembering where you were.
Robert looked far too pleased with himself.
"Worth it," he whispered.
You leaned your head against his shoulder.
For a few precious minutes, neither of you said anything.
The breeze rustled through the pines overhead, carrying the scent of earth and pine needles.
Somewhere nearby, Daryl was quietly teasing Danny about getting lost, and Toni rolled her eyes so hard everyone could practically hear it.
As everyone started walking again, the trail narrowed until you had to walk single file.
Robert slowed just enough so you caught up beside him.
Without saying a word, his hand brushed yours.
Then his fingers slipped between yours.
Jed shot a quick glance back.
Robert immediately let go.
Your pinkies found each other instead.
You looked down, trying to hide your smile.
"You are impossible," you murmured.
"I like your compromises."
His cheeks turned pink despite the cold.
By evening everyone settled beneath thick trees where the fire would stay hidden.
The temperature dropped quickly.
You wrapped your jacket tighter around yourself, trying not to shiver.
Robert noticed immediately.
Before you could protest, he tugged off his flannel overshirt and draped it over your shoulders.
"I've got another layer."
"You sound very confident."
"I have to impress my girlfriend somehow."
You rolled your eyes, but pulled the shirt tighter around yourself anyway.
It still smelled faintly like pine and wood smoke.
"You know," you said quietly, "this is definitely not how I pictured us spending time together."
"I imagined football games."
He looked toward the dark trees surrounding the camp.
"When all this is over..."
You reached over and took his hand.
"When all this is over," you finished, "you owe me that milkshake."
His thumb brushed across your knuckles.
For the first time in days, neither of you talked about tomorrow.
Neither of you talked about the war.
You simply sat together beneath the stars, stealing warmth from each other while the rest of the Wolverines rested nearby.
For a little while, the woods didn't feel quite so frightening.
And as long as Robert's hand stayed in yours, quiet was enough.
