The sleepover at Emma’s house was supposed to be fun. Livi had packed her favorite Winnie the Pooh pajama pants, her stuffed bunny, and a small backpack with extra snacks. She’d been excited all day, chatting with Emma about the movies they’d watch and the games they’d play. But as the night wore on, the giggles and whispers started, and Livi found herself drifting off to sleep first.
The room was dimly lit by a nightlight shaped like a star, casting soft shadows on the walls. The other littles, Emma, Lily, and Noah, were still wide awake, huddled together on the top bunk and the floor, sharing secrets and teasing each other in that playful, slightly mean way that only littles could pull off.
“Noah’s gonna pee the bed again,” Emma whispered, poking Noah in the ribs. Noah squirmed, his cheeks turning pink.
“I do not!” he hissed back, pulling his blanket tighter around himself. “I only did that once!”
“Yeah, last week,” Lily chimed in, giggling. “And you had to wear your pull-up all day after that.”
Noah groaned, burying his face in his pillow. “Shut up!”
Lily stuck her tongue out at him. “What? It’s true! You’re such a toddler.”
Emma smirked. “At least he doesn’t leak through his pull-up at regression school like someone else I know.”
Lily’s face burned. “That was one time!”
“One time that everyone saw,” Noah shot back, finally getting his revenge.
The teasing went back and forth, each of them taking turns poking fun at the others. Livi, curled up on the bottom bunk, stirred slightly but didn’t wake. Her breathing was slow and steady, her Winnie the Pooh pants riding up just a little as she shifted.
Then, the conversation took a turn.
“Hey,” Emma said suddenly, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “What do you think Livi’s wearing under those pants?”
Lily’s eyes lit up. “Ooooh, I bet it’s a pull-up.”
Noah snorted. “No way. She’s not a toddler like you guys.”
“Am not!” Lily protested, but Emma was already crawling toward the edge of the bunk, peering down at Livi’s sleeping form.
“She’s always so quiet about it,” Emma mused. “Never changes in front of us. Never talks about it.”
Lily leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper. “I heard her crinkle earlier.”
Noah’s eyes widened. “No way.”
“Way,” Lily insisted. “When she was getting her snack. I heard it.”
Emma bit her lip, then reached out, her fingers hovering over the waistband of Livi’s Winnie the Pooh pants. “Only one way to find out.”
Before anyone could stop her, she tugged the pants down just enough to reveal the top of a thick, cartoon-covered diaper. A bright, smiling lion grinned up at them from the front.
Noah let out a choked laugh. “Oh my god.”
Lily clapped a hand over her mouth, her eyes wide. “She’s wearing a diaper!”
Emma, emboldened, pulled the pants down a little further. The diaper was already soggy, the white material darkened to a pale yellow, the wetness indicator a solid, unmistakable blue.
“She’s soaked,” Emma whispered, her voice trembling with laughter.
Lily giggled. “Look at her! She’s such a baby!”
Noah, still trying to catch his breath, pointed at the diaper. “And she’s sucking on her pinky!”
Livi mumbled something in her sleep, shifting slightly, but she didn’t wake. The three of them froze, holding their breath, but when she settled again, they burst into quiet giggles.
“She’s gonna be so mad when she finds out we saw,” Lily said, wiping tears from her eyes.
Emma grinned. “We should take a picture.”
“No way!” Noah hissed. “That’s too mean.”
“Fine,” Emma relented, but she couldn’t resist one last tug at Livi’s pants, just to see the diaper crinkle again. The sound was loud in the quiet room, and Livi stirred once more, her brow furrowing.
Then, without warning, Lily let out a snort of laughter, too loud, too sudden.
She blinked up at the three of them, her brain still foggy with sleep, but the sight of them looming over her, their faces twisted with laughter, sent a jolt of panic through her.
“What?” she started, but then she felt it, the cool air on her legs, the weight of her pants pulled down, the unmistakable squish of her diaper as she moved.
Her face burned. “You... you didn’t!”
Emma couldn’t hold it in anymore. She burst out laughing, pointing at Livi’s diaper. “You’re such a baby!”
Livi’s hands flew to her pants, yanking them back up, but it was too late. The damage was done. The room erupted into laughter, the sound bouncing off the walls, filling the space until Livi wanted to disappear.
She groaned, rolling over and pulling her blanket over her head. “I hate you guys.”
But even as she said it, she could hear the laughter dying down, replaced by the familiar, teasing voices of her friends.
“Aww, don’t be mad, baby,” Lily cooed.
Noah snickered. “Yeah, we all know you’re the real little here.”
Livi peeked out from under the blanket, her cheeks still flushed, but she couldn’t help the small smile tugging at her lips.
