A preview of book 4! I just completed the third book, but I’m busy sketching out the new characters and recurring ones which have a new look. There’s a time skip this time too. Also, Book 3 has sold out, but don’t worry more copies are currently being printed!
Lastly, I dropped here some sources where I got inspired for the designs of these characters featured here in case anyone is curious. I made some changes however to match the ethnographic written accounts.
A little extra page thrown in Zotz book 3. Book 2 readers will get the reference...
This drawing was made by guest artist, Louise Fogerty, who was such a tremendous help in getting this third installment done. A huge thanks to her. Do yourself a favor and check out her own comic, “What’s New Under Tonatiuh” which centers around Nahua deities and their myths!

Meet the Generals of the Tlacao Kingdom. As the Tlacao Kingdom transforms itself from what used to be the old Mexican Triple Alliance, we see a change in the military structure. It has restructured itself based on the four directions, with an additional covert military-priest order based from the Tlaloc Temple.
THE BATTLE OF ITZSHALKO Captain Ak'ab'al (meaning "darkness"), the nephew of the Emperor Tunal of the Teotl Empire, led his combined K'iche, Kaqchiquel, and Tsutujil armies into Itzshalko (Izalco, El Salvador), then part of the Kushkatan Kingdom. While the Teotl Empire had been concentrating on its western campaigns with the Tlacao Kingdom, in the east, they waged war with the Nahuas (Pipiles) as well. This was part of the Emperor's strategy of defeating the Tlacao Kingdom by expanding his empire so big it would eventually overshadow his rivals. The battle for Itzshalko commenced with a heavy siege of the city overlooking the great volcano. The Nahua's heavy resistance resulted in the Teotl Empire's armies making a brief retreat into the forest after coming under heavy fire from their stone throwing machines. Knowing this was a trap, the Pipil waited, refusing to be drawn out. This however - was all part of Ak'ab'al's plans. He used this opportunity to plant dolls dressed as warriors and scattered them about in the forest. At night, in silence, the Teotl army moved to the other side of the city. Meanwhile, the Pipil left their city and went into the forest to plan a surprise attack to ambush the Teotl armies. When the Pipil's arrived at the encampment, to their horror it was empty. Realizing their mistake, the armies rushed back to the city, which they now found completely surrounded. Knowing that fighting them in their own forest would be difficult enough, Ak'ab'al forced the army out. As infiltrating the city would be useless since its civilian population was previously evacuated and thus it was completely empty. In a fierce battle that lasted all night and into the dawn, Ak'ab'al was victorious. Emperor Tunal, acknowledging their fierce resistance did not incorporate them into his empire. Rather he had them give him free access to use their ports, pay a tribute, as well as force them to send their armies to aid the Teotl Empire in times of need. The two states made peace and thus ended the war. Captain Ak'ab'al is regarded as a warrior prodigy who seldom ever knew defeat. In battle he is always recognized by his death mask and the rattling sound of seashells he wears around his torso. However, he never took fighting too seriously and preferred to drink with courtesans above all. This drew the ire of his cousin - Princess Xoc. After defeating the Nahuas in Itzashalko, Ak'ab'al was ordered by his uncle to aid his daughter in her campaigns against the Mexicans in the west. This news came much to Xoc's annoyance, who believed this move as an indication that her father did not trust her in carrying out the campaign herself. With the prodigious Captain Ak'ab'al now setting his eyes west towards Mexico-Tenochtitlan, will this turn the tide of the war in the Teotl Empire's favor? Ink drawing by me.
As promised earlier, this is a preview of the third book of Zotz. Just the first three pages, but hopefully enough to keep you all satiated.
Quick summary for those who read the first two book so *SPOILER WARNING*
Two Maya twin brothers, Pakal and Kaan, live with their father, an ex general, Nachan, who now lives a life of peace in a small village by the Chuchumatan mountains. Bandits descend on their village to assassinate Nachan, destroying the whole place and massacring nearly everyone in the process. Shocked and outraged, the boys go out to seek revenge. They get their vengeance, but this still leaves a bitter taste in their mouths. The boys are later recruited into the military to fight for the Tlacao Kingdom (A new state born from the old Triple Alliance) locked in a war with the Teotl Empire (An empire forged in the unification of the Maya kingdoms of Guatemala). The twins survive their first battle, and are preparing for the next one, in Chiapas. But first, a flashback to the wars with the Conquistadors...
Also note this is an alternate history.
The cover for Book 3 of Zotz. Cover art by the talented Salvadoran artist, Ozi Magaña (Had a guest artist do the cover this time). The third book has a release date for spring of next year. Stay tuned, early November I will be previewing the first 3 pages of the book online right here for you all to read!
Your art is so good omg, how long have you been drawing/making art?
Thanks! Sincé I was 3 I think. Started drawing circles and monsters with a pen and printer paper or binder paper with my oldest sister. I have huge stashes of my childhood art, since I practiced almost on a daily basis (you should see my school doodles that took over the empty space on binder paper). Eventually I had a dinosaur, animal and later around age 7 a history obsession. I was always super detailed oriented though haha.
Joronaja or Cold Water. Princess Xoc's dwarf and handmaid who always accompanies her and lives in the K'iche palace of Q'umarkaj (Utatlán). Character from Zotz.
Yssuchi and Pakal. Sketch for my upcoming volume of Zotz book 3!
Somethings about to go down....
