This is amazing and I do not know if I'm saying this kindly or as an insult. It's almost scary to realize that if people wish to, they could manipulate the good will of people by pretending to support or push certain causes. We live in a era where one can effortlessly say a few words for self-marketing purposes or just say "this character is X" to get quick positive AND negative marketing. Sure some truly causes like these but we live in an era of suckers who'll believe everything.
Iām not going to dissect this whole thing, but I think youāre aiming your cynicism in entirely the wrong way.
I mean, yes, there are definitely people out there who want to exploit these sorts of movements for their own personal benefit. As a shorthand, I will call them ācorporationsā because they exist entirely to make money. I mean, seriously, look it up, itās actually illegal for them not to try to maximize their shareholderās profit.
But that doesnāt mean that these self-interested parties supporting your movement is a bad thing. It actually means that theyāve read the signs and determined that supporting this movement will make them the most money/fame/votes. That doesnāt mean you have to align yourselves with them completely, theyāre just weather-vanes telling you which way the wind is blowing. If someone is thinking āIāve gotta get on this train before it leaves me behindā that just means the train has a lot of momentum.
So honestly I donāt care why each individual person supports trans rights, in particular donating to charity or calling in to voice support on a charity stream. Maybe they feel passionately about it, maybe they just want to cash in. It doesnāt make a lick of difference to me. What does matter is that trans rights is now mainstream enough that people think they can do it without backlash.
The opposite is far worse for any social movement. Thatās when itās considered too ācontroversialā to even mention in polite company. When corporations are too afraid of pissing people off to even try to show marginalized groups in a positive light. Because that means theyāre reading the wind and determining that aligning themselves with this cause in unprofitable. That this doesnāt sit well with their core demographics so theyāll just pretend it doesnāt exist. Or even worse, make them solely into the butt of a joke, where the punchline is that they exist. Thatās how itās been for most of media history.
So yeah, I like the fact that people are supporting trans rights, and I donāt give two shits about their motives, even if theyāre selfish, because it means that these rational actors have decided that nowās the time to publicly support trans rights. And that means the wind is shifting.
Frankly, I donāt think youāre being cynical enough. You can bet your ass that corporations would throw entire groups under the bus to make a quick dollar. They have absolutely no reason not to. But the fact that itās no longer profitable to do so means that enough people in this world care. And thatās a good thing.
I agree with this. Yukari is not some almighty character that knows absolutely everything and has an answer to everything and is so perfect. The way I see her, she is just simply someone that knows how to pick her battles. She seems to always win because she will only go into situations that she knows sheāll win. She minimizes risk to its lowest before attempting to do anything. Also frankly, I feel a lot of Yukariās power is simply only what is perceived when in reality itās all just an illusion. Which is just a complicated way of saying āShe just looks bigger than what she really is.ā Because sheās so good at looking like sheās on top of everything, people will assume she is. And as a youkai, this is something very fitting. This of course isnāt to say sheās weak though, sheās still very strong. Sheās a sage of Gensokyo after all.
