So I heard about an interview with Mo and Jed about how Grant is a “bad” victim? That they use that as their excuse/explanation for Agents of SHIELD’s horrible characterization and terrible/nonsensical storylines for season 2. Are they being sincere because by that logic all of the characters on this show are “bad” victims and are responsible for how they react to their trauma/abuse. Fitz is a bad victim because he tried to suffocate Ward in his cell and plan a murder with Simmons. Simmons is a bad victim because she threatened to kill Ward, premeditates murder and murders a bystander. Skye tells someone who attempted suicide multiple times that he should have tried harder to kill himself, shoots Ward 4 times, and attacks Raina. May let one horrible incident turn her into a cold, uncompassionate, vengeful, and violent person. May sets up Ward to attack Kara for revenge and is happy about tricking them and causing them pain. Coulson was upset about the TAHAITI procedure being done to him, yet threatens Ward with it and actually does the procedure to Cal. Coulson also sells Ward as a political favor. He and SHIELD are essentially at the worst terrorist and at best vigilantes. They do not have authority to do anything and are not recognized by any governing authority, yet Coulson sells a prisoner because he is acting off of personal feelings about someone who should not be in his custody. It is a horrible procedure and he begged to die, yet he will put other people through it? And all of them put a man into a prison cell and conditions that most governing world authorities would consider inhumane and unacceptable prison conditions. Who are the “bad” victims now? They ALL chose to react in these immoral and unethical ways, no one forced nor coerced them to attack Ward or treat him in ways that are considered crimes or inhumane.
Nothing this show does can be taken seriously because it is absurd and hypocritical. The viewer is supposed to hate a character that was abused by his family, kidnapped by a megalomaniac, and real world legitimate brainwashed and manipulated, left in isolation for FIVE YEARS and who is taught that compassion for anyone aside from Garrett is a weakness. YET this character shows a vast capacity for compassion and a natural innateness to protect others. He has so much potential to be and do good. Yes he has killed, lied, and betrayed, but guess what?! So has every other character on this show. They are spies. I am supposed to hate him, yet still love all the other characters because they are called the “good guys”, BUT they do not act like good guys. They do exactly what they accuse their adversaries/enemies of doing, yet still think they have the moral high ground, still think they are good. Season 2 was the worst writing I have ever seen for a show, but I talked myself into seeing how they would tie it all in together because surely the obvious and blatant hypocrisy of the “good guys”, their sanctimonious attitude and opposing actions had to be intentional. No “professional” writer, no network show could be that obtuse. Surely? Boy was I wrong to expect intelligence and professionalism from this show.
I am just so disappointed, I really enjoyed season one, but season two made me see all of the characters except Grant Ward as petty, immature, hateful hypocrites, definitely not good guys. And Grant Ward? He barely had a story in season 2 and most of it did not make any sense. Most was not explained and what was there was not the same character. Yes, characters change, but it has to be shown to be believable. So congrats AoS, I can’t stand your “heroes”, can’t see them as that anymore, really see them as hateful and petty people and although I don’t see Grant Ward as good, I see him as someone who could be. I have more compassion for him than I do for every other character on this show. He has been through more than anyone else and shows more capacity for compassion and empathy than everyone else. People say he does not take responsibility for his actions or blames others, but the ironic thing is, the other characters do not take responsibility for their poor choices and blame Grant. Grant Ward’s character is the main reason I kept watching season 1 and the ONLY reason I kept watching season 2 and season 2 was very poorly done and horrid. Everything I had liked about the other characters was destroyed. I liked Skye’s compassion and ability to think differently in season 1, all of that was gone in season 2. I liked Fitz’s humor and loyalty and his ability to see good in people, but that was snuffed out in 2. I liked Simmons’s sense of adventure, curiosity, and inability to lie, awkwardness in season 1, but she turned into a vengeful and cold person in 2. I liked Coulson’s ideology that “no one is no one
, everyone deserves a second chance, and desire to help/save people, wanting to improve SHIELD where was that in season 2. Some people hate Grant, but really they need to examine their judgment and make sure they are holding the other characters to the same standards and scrutiny, because the writers, creators, and actors sure don’t which makes them just as hypocritical and sanctimonious as Coulson’s team and SHIELD.
No wonder Joss has disassociated himself from Agents of SHIELD. No wonder the MCU does not recognize this show nor take it seriously. No wonder many of the actors have no interest in guest starring on the show. I feel bad for Dalton. His talents are underutilized, I hope he finds another role that I can support him in. One where a show does not skew morals and ethics, and that treats its actors and characters well, one that has good writing and good storylines.
