I think with Steve, people put him in to particular tropes and then extrapolate from there, instead of actually looking at his character and using that as a base to go deeper. It's how you get fandom ignoring his acerbic side (because he's 'mom') or the fanon that the only music Steve likes is cheesy pop.
I mean, I personally understand if it isn't someone's cup of tea or they just dislike it. What I don't understand is the hate some fans have towards other fan who do like stancy. I feel like people think if you like a certain ship you're a terrible person. I mean, I feel like shiping is supposed to be fun. I do think sometimes there can be conversations that are serious and should be acknowledged. I mean, you could argue that the ship does have problems maybe but I don't think liking these two characters together is invalid either. I just feel sometimes the st fandom is a bit toxic with shiping. Sorry, for the rant, I just don't like all the hate stancy gets a lot.
I don't really know why Stancy gets the level of bile it does either. Obviously some of it is fairly standard ship war stuff (perhaps also aggravated by the whole 'J*ncy parallels B*ler' thing' that B*ler's would use as proof of their ship?)
Like you, I do understand if people dislike it; however people act as if it killed their grandma and I don't understand that level of hate.

I can't really think of any unpopular opinions rn (I have them, but my mind's gone blank lol).
So here's some Stancy thoughts in general: I like them slowly working there way back to each other post epilogue. I like how they look at each other with their ridiculous doe eyes. I like how they work together. I like how they save each other. I like how heavily the idea of personal growth and self-forgiveness plays in other story. I like they can find lightness with each other.
When was the moment in Stranger Things when you started to like Steve?
I'm not entirely sure if I can pin it down to one moment tbh? For one, I got interested in the show soon after s4 aired, so, while I certainly wasn't heavily spoiled for every thing, I did know the some things beforehand. I guess if I had to pin point a moment (or moments!), I'd have to be really unoriginal and say it's when he goes and cleans the graffiti, goes to apologise to Jonathan, and then comes back in with the nailbat. Very much a 'oh yeah I buy this development and like it' moment.
I guess it's not an opinion per se, but Nancy is so much more than a badass, or 'Walk 'em down Wheeler'. It get tiresome when that's the only thing that is noted about her.
I'm not sure if this is popular or not, but I think Nancy genuinely enjoys learning and school for its own sake.
I think Steve's family life is dysfunctional but not abusive; more similar to the Wheelers distinction than an abusive dynamic. I think Steve's dad is a dick and the two are not close. The fact that Steve (and Tommy!) knows that his mother accompanies his father because she thinks he'll cheat really is not a healthy dynamic to have you know? I think he gets on better with his mum. In general, I don't think the Harrington's are a close family.

Stranger Things has always been a show that prioritises plot and action over character, and season one is really not as good as the fandom holds it up to be.
I've mentioned it before, but one of my most beloved headcanons is that when they do get married, they elope. There was a wedding where I work with a couple eloping on our section of beach with just our head supervisor and gardener as witnesses and that is the kinda vibe I see. Both Dustin and Karen are rather miffed by this, but oh well, it's not their wedding (and Karen can plan a reception if she wants to, during which Dustin is free to give his embarrassing best man speech. Steve cries just a little at the speech).
Nancy has cold hands and feet (she's just like me fr), but that's ok because she has Steve to warm them up for her. It still remains a shock every time she puts her cold feet on him in bed though.
Nancy's hair in the 90s =
Both are fans casual physical touch. Nancy's more lowkey, more of a hand brushing Steve's shoulder or hair or back as she walks past… Steve likes to drop head kisses randomly.
Steve has migraines sometimes. He also has some scars from the deeper demobat bites.
Nancy has tinnitus flare ups - usually caused by an increase of stress. She makes sure to wear earplugs when using the shooting range to help prevent it getting worse.

i feel so powerfully that nancy takes her years of college + dropping out to actually understand what she wants and because she's like idk a whole entire person what she wants can be everything - career, success, love, travel, family, everything she truly deserves. steve who takes his years to start longing for a little bit more despite loving what he has, but wanting to expand on it and share it with someone. him and nancy both heading that same direction over the course of years, as she opts to not really explore relationships (she hasn't found one that interests her) and steve tries very hard to make it work with people, but no one is ever quite right. a random hookup on new years in ten years after endless years of casual flirting and mild confusion that has them both realizing it wasn't that it was them all along, but it's certainly them now. they've grown to be what the other needed. i don't know nancy's epilogue hair makes me need to mulder and scully them something awful like i need for everybody to be like "FUCKING. FINALLY." when they finally get together with a unified and new vision of their future together.
YESSSSSSSSSSS the idea of them eventually finding their way back together because they’re truly compatible is just sooooo delicious
as much as i really wanted them to Talk in s5 there was a weight between them because of everything left unaddressed and it could’ve led to something akin to jancy feeling suffocated from expectations of their relationship and what they should do. the main appeal of stancy for me is that they grow apart and self-actualise into the partner the other person needs and wants but that they did it for themselves.
imo natalia and joe have so much chemistry that even when stancy has been shot down in the narrative they still present as having lingering feelings. I 1000% can see them driving everyone around them crazy bc they’re so close but it just never happens until it does…
Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but Steve takes Dustin to the dance and they have a sweet moment in the car where he gives him advice. Then, later on during the dance, Nancy has a moment with Dustin too. I felt like it was a way of uniting the characters even while they're apart.

My favorite thing about the shipping side of the Stranger Things fandom is how many people love to shit on Steve x Nancy and then use Steve x Nancy lines/scenes for fanfics, art, manips, etc.
Public enemy number 1 most disgusting boring basic toxic reductive ship in the fandom (maybe world?), but by god do their antis still find them to be the blueprint of pookiedom.
The thing is, in order to have a healthy and robust fandom, a piece of media NEEDS to leave some questions unanswered. Some relations unshipped. Some plot holes unfilled. Some backstories unwritten. Some lore unexplained. You need possibilities that will keep people up at night. The beautiful thing about an empty lot in a neighborhood is what people make in it
FYI, the character with the most amount of screen time of the older teens is Nancy. (fyi, the post uses 3 different sources, their methods of data collection may all be slightly different and lead to slight discrepancies re: Hopper, Joyce and Mike, but are pretty consistent re the older teens)
td;lr: Nancy is consistently the character among the older teens with the most screen time across all the seasons, although Steve does equal it in season 3 and Jonathan is only 2 minutes short in s2.

Now s4 is the first time that Jonathan falls outside the top 10 characters in regards to screen time, so we don't have the data from this individual. However this instagram reel lets us track season 4.

Season one has the biggest discrepancy between screen time: Nancy and Jonathan have 55 and 50 minutes more screen time than Steve. Which makes sense as Steve was not a regular character at the point.
Seasons two, three, and five have very small discrepancies between all three: 4, 9, and 8 minutes respectively, with Steve having the least screen time in s2+5, while Jonathan has the least in s3.
It's season four that has the big difference in screen time: Steve has 36 minutes less screen time than Nancy, and Jonathan has 39 minutes less screen time than Steve. I do think part of the reason for such big gaps is because of the longer episode lengths: season 4 runtime is almost twice as long as s1, over 5 and a half hours longer than s3, and almost 3 hours longer than s5.
s1 of stranger things does some minor flipping of the trope of sex = death in horror movies in that it's Barb, rather than Nancy (the girl having sex) who is killed. But it still retains the misogyny of the trope because there is the idea presented, through Barb's insistence that 'this isn't her', that Nancy choosing to have sex is wrong, despite Nancy herself making the choice to have Steve turn around and see her, as well as wearing a new bra for the occasion (indicating it wasn't a spur of the moment decision).
And of course Barb, the warning voice, is killed. The connection between the two actions is explicit with Barb being killed being interspersed between Nancy and Steve having sex.
Nancy's lose of 'her virginity' is thus linked to death and above all guilt re: Barb; and we see that, even after getting some measure of justice in s2, that she still holds feelings of guilt and responsibility that Vecna is able to pull upon in 4.07.
I also think that this being the only sex scene in the show ends up giving a rather grim view re: sex
'like we didn't kill Barb': does Nancy really ever stop believing that she is responsible for Barb's death? Does the narrative ever really question whether she should feel this responsibility? I think in many ways the fandom does hold Nancy responsible for Barb, even though there was no way for her to even conceive that such a creature as the demogorgon even existed at that point. At the very least, parts of the fandom believe that it's evidence that Nancy having sex was wrong.
