James & Lily | 17th Birthday
In truth Lily should have known that she had nothing to worry about. After all, how long had James fancied her while sheâd turned him down flat every time, sometimes not very nicely at that? And yet he came back, he gave her far more chances that sheâd ever given him. Really he was a good man. Of course he made his mistakes and yes, heâd been a right git to certain people, but the more that Lily had gotten to know him the more certain she was that his intentions were good at heart. She watched him carefully as he flipped through the little booklet, gauging his expressions. The last thing she wanted was for him to think that she was either mocking him, or for him to assume they were meant for someone else. She wanted him to keep them for those little moment that they were spending alone together so often. Â Judging by the somewhat sly grin that eventually crossed his face, she was pretty sure heâd gotten the hint.
âGood. I thought they might come in handy since sheâs so persistently stubborn.â She laughed softly as she met his eyes again, picking a bit of fun at herself. It was a longstanding joke around Gryffindor house that James was going to need to serious luck and help to ever win Lily over. She watched his fingers as the danced over the pages before settling on one and tearing it free.
She was banking on maybe the kiss or the cuddle one, since that had pretty much been the definition of their relationship before her accident. She fully expected him to use the free wish to ask her out again, at some point in the future. She hadnât been expecting him to pull that card right away though. Her expression showed her surprise and her green eyes were wide as he started to explain and ask the inevitable question. God, how she used to hate those words coming from his mouth. Now they gave her butterflies and set her heart to racing. When had it changed? Thinking about it she wasnât certain but she knew without a doubt that it had. Somewhere along the line James Potter had turned out to be exactly the boy she needed.
âHmm let me think about thatâŚâ She grinned at him, teasing him just a little before braking out in a happy little laugh and nodding to him. âYeah I think that sounds like a great idea.â
He watched her, her face turned into a instantly nervous kind of look. Which also worried him. What if she really says no again? What if she ends up just laughing. Oh merlin. He hoped that she would yes- with all of his heart. He didn't know what would he would do if she said no. That would frankly make a really awkward situation - which he wasn't very good in. He tended to just sit there, then say a quick good bye then hurry off. Slapping himself mentally for whatever he had just done. Which sadly, happened more than he would have liked it to. His heart stopped when she said she was going to think about it, but the grin on her face lightened the mood at the moment. So did the following words.
The smile on his face- was probably the biggest smile he had ever worn.  After years of having to chase her down the halls to ask her out, only for her to turn around with a glare from hell, she had finally said yes. In his mind he was screaming of joy. On the outside was a pure look of shock- but pure happiness at the same time. He didn't hesitate before leaning over to kiss her. It was a soft kiss, but full of a gentle passion. His fingers carefully caressed her cheek. He knew that she was almost done recovering; but there was still something there that made him be more gentle then usual. He in no way wanted to hurt or push her.
He could hear the future teasing from his mates about them being a couple, or how he had finally won her over. And he could almost imagine getting a whistle or two whenever they would be seen in picture. Oh lord- and Doe. Doe would be fawning over them. Doe was one of the few people that truly believes that James cares for her- and won't let Lily down. He thanks her for that. He slowly pulled away from Lily. His attention focusing back on her.
"You know, I have to admit, this is the best birthday present ever." He whispered softly, kissing her nose softly.
James & Lily | 17th Birthday
Lily felt a wave of nervous tension run through he at his words. What on earth was she doing? Of course she hadnât been out of the hospital to buy anything. He was probably expecting something awesome and unique and all that crazyness. The butterflies in her stomach doubled as she reached over to grab the little booklet bound with ribbon from her side table and offer it to him almost shyly. Sweet Merlin if he laughed at her or something like that she was going to feel humiliatedâŚ
It was just a simple little booklet, hand drawn and bound together in Lilyâs spare time in hospital that was full of little âsweetheart couponsâ. Her mother and father had always exchanged them on holidays with little things written in special to them. Lily had gone for generic things, but things that were decidedly⌠couple-y. On purpose.Â
âI couldnât really go⌠err shopping for something⌠so I thought maybeâ, you could um⌠use these on the girl that fancies you?â She bit her lip, swallowing her nerves and giving him a crooked little smile. She was all but telling him she wanted to be with him and just waiting for the fallout.
He watched as she pulled out a small book, it was all sorts of colors, but particularly the colors you would see on Valentines day. Pink, red, purple even. Once he had the book in his hands he could see her careful writing more clearly. On it was, Love Coupons. Beneath in the same curvise handwriting was, Presented to James Potter. His smile grew. He opened the book looking at them, reading each one.He could just imagine presenting on of the following coupons to a certain ginger possibly when she had gotten out of the hospital. He stopped at the coupon for a big kiss.He laughed mentally at the image of seeing her in the hall, randomly kissing her, giving her the coupon, then carrying. Her face would be like a tomato. Maybe he'd just have to keep that idea in mind. He nodded in answer to her question.
"I sure can," he tells her. And he can. In fact- he thinks her might just use one today. His fingers scan over the the free wish coupon, gently ripping out. His eyes focus on it for a second, before looking at up, his anticipated eyes meeting hers. After the coupon was ripped out his fingers fiddled with it, thinking of the correct wording. He really didn't want to mess this up. After a few minutes of some awkward silence he knew what to say.Â
He licks his lips quickly before he hands her the free wish coupon. "I have one really on request with this," He says looking at the coupon, "I've seen and been with many girls, but none quite make an imprint as someone." And that part was true he had many girlfriends, many kisses, but those times and kisses, were never as good as the time and kisses and had shared with her. He never felt that 'spark'. He had no idea what she would say to what he was going to say. After years of being told to sod off, or go away he was almost sure she would say yes this time. And if she didn't.. Well there's always next year right?
"And that request is," he paused taking her hand gently, "Will you be my girlfriend?"
James & Lily | 17th Birthday
For his presence Lily had found herself exceptionally grateful. She had been denying to herself long enough that James was actually a decent person and the fact that he had come along and probably saved her life was just the last step in solidifying the companionship that they had been slowly building. Over the year they had gone from bickering and annoying one another to being all but inseparable now. In fact she found more comfort and safety with James than anywhere else. Was she frightened of the castle, itâs dark corners and certain residents after her ordeal? Yes. But if they were together it felt a little more secure, because she knew if anything happened theyâd protect each other.
âThatâs good. Be safe, okay? I know you guys like a bit of trouble but⌠itâs dangerous out there.â It was the first reference she had made to what had happened, but she felt the need to say it. In the back of her mind was that little voice saying they were safer together. Of course heâd be with Peter and Remus and Black, which was more than enough back up on any given day, but the feeling remained and she wanted him to come back safe and sound. âYeah, sheâs a mother hen, Doe.â She laughed softly at the mention of their friend and her crazy protective side. Leave it to Dorcas to fuss over someone. âHey, by the way. I have a present for you.â
He nodded a bit; agreeing but silently. He knew it was dangerous out there. Of course it was. You say one little thing to someone and next you know you're unconscious in an alley. Or worse, you find the girl you love almost lifeless, damp in blood. He tried not to imagine of when he had found her body. He didn't like to think about it. How she could have been gone if he didn't find her. Let a lone that he couldn't get back because he knew that if he tried, he would end up like her. James knew that he couldn't take on Amycus. For he was far to cruel, he wasn't afraid to hurt people. Even a frail girl who had just made the choice to just say a few perhaps harmful words. Maybe he was just having a bad day, and Lily had pushed him to far. Either way- she didn't deserve it.
Her soft voice interrupted his deep thoughts, of reasoning behind the attack- but in a way he was glad she had token him away from his thoughts. He didn't want to dwell on it to long.Â
He wasn't as surprised when she said she had gotten him a present- considering she had gotten him something for last Christmas and Valentines. He could see the slight resent in her face though last Christmas though. It didn't have as much as ease to it as it did now a days. He was curious himself as it what it the present would be. Perhaps she had it on the other side of the bed, wrapped in some type of paper, or in a bag.
"And what would this present be?" He asked with a signature childish grin, wiggling his eyebrows at her.
James & Lily | 17th Birthday
Of course Lily had remembered. For five years prior there were certain days of the year that she had learned meant trouble. Siriusâ Birthday in early November, Peterâs and Remusâ at the beginning of March, and of course March 27th, the birthday of the infamous James Potter. Those were the days that it was absolutely guaranteed that there would be some form of trouble from the four boys. Well, perhaps not this year since for some reasons James was willing to be with her thought it was his birthday and there was probably some big plan. She sat up in her hospital bed, the worst of her wounds beginning to fade to scars and yellowed bruises. Even in the safety of the school she stayed alert and waiting for her attacker or someone new to come along and finish her off. In fact the only time she seemed to relax lately was when James was sitting in with her which thankfully was quite often, though it never seemed often enough. He had saved her, if it wasnât for James she probably would have died in the snow, or so she thought, and somehow she was determined to repay him.
But for the moment there were other things to focus on. She glanced over at the door just in time to see him walking in and a smile lit up her face. His gentle touch as he moved her hair aside was enough to make her relax and she didnât actually want him to move away after. âHey. Iâm doing alright. Mostly healing up. Nurse says it takes a while for wounds from curses to close and all but I should be out soon. Happy birthday. Was it any good?â
He had been visiting her every day. After seeing her limp, almost lifeless body he felt a need to make sure that she was okay. Even if she was in the hands of a nurse. His hand fiddled with a piece of lint in his pocket, but all of his attention was on her, her weak but steady voice talking. James shrugged. It hasn't been as interesting as past birthdays, but who knows. Sirius could end up having some devilish plan in the back of his mind. It was Sirius after all, who knew what went through his mind.
"It's been fine. Nothing special. I'll probably doing something with the guys later tonight." He nodded slightly. He felt a pang of guilt for not staying with her tonight, but he knew she would probably want him to go. He smiled slightly. "I'm glad she's going to be letting you go soon." He chuckled. "Doe's been worried like crazy you know." He noted. Doe was also like an overprotective, loving mother. She always worried about her friends, no matter how minor the injury. And in a way, he admired Doe for that. She hardly seemed to focus on herself anymore.
James & Lily | 17th Birthday
He was surprised she had even remembered. Although, you'd think you'd remember the birthday of the boy you snogged in a tent by the lake. Although she was still resting in the hospital wing from her injuries, she still wanted him to visit. Even though he had planned on visiting every night he could. He almost wished he could visit during the day, but he knew he couldn't just skip classes. He soon made his way into the hospital wing. Luckily he didn't have to argue with Pomfrey to see her. Usually he'd have to give a list of reasons to see her. She was like an over protective mother. Times ten. Â Although with Lily's condition it was a bit understandable.Â
He walked over to her bed with a warming smile. He sat beside her, carefully moving a ginger lock from her eyes. "Hello." He pulled away his hand carefully from his face, sliding it back into his pocket. "Are you doing any better?" He asked concerned. It had been a while since the incident but he couldn't help but wonder how she was doing. He hoped that it wouldn't be long till that over protective mother they call a nurse would let her go. He looked back to her emerald eyes, awaiting a response.
