Here are quite a few links to christmas tree png and psds! some of these files are RAR so you would need a program to get them out of there. I use winRAR and i totally recommend it!

now after you’ve downloaded a tree and the christmas tree lights. open up a new document of your choice of size. depending on if this is for an edit or a background then fill it with a certain color or whatever you are using. drag the tree of your choice over to the new document and get the crop tool then right click on the three and select Free Transform. then click the linked chain button on the tool bar above your workspace and then downsize the tree to your choice.
now add a person with santa hat or something holidayish if you like and then flatten your image.
now get any one of those lights from that pack from the link i provided. I had chosen just the ball of light that are on the left. now drag one to your edit and once again get the crop tool, right click, free transform, then the linked chain. and move it over to the tree then make it as small as you like. now you can either just duplicate that layer a couple of times and move them all over the three or you can choose the different colored ones and add those too.
now that you’ve got all the lights on your tree open up the Animations palette from going to Window > Animation and then on the right side click on the four lines and then select ‘Make frames from layers’. now delete the frame of your background then click on the four lines again and click Select All Frames. then on the layers palette click on the eye beside the background to make it visible behind all the frames. then just adjust the speed to whatever you think you look best and save it as a gif and you’re done!

it may look like there isn’t anything in there but thats because they’re all invisible. if you are actually read this then click on the first word to get it.
First off make a new document with your preferred size. this image you sent to me is 512 x 512 but the actual graphic without the white border is 462 x 460 so you choose what size you want to work with. now make a new layer with the shortcut at the end of the layer palette also make sure your foreground color is the color you want your shape to be.
then you're gonna have to download some new shape tools here is one that I found that have a similar shape but is a little off but it also has the dots inside. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD
now after you've downloaded it you can open up the folder where it was downloaded and just drag it into photoshop, that usually works for me.
next select that new blank layer you had made before. go to the shape tool and click the drop down menu of the acutal shapes and find the one you want to use. i used the one with the dots inside. then click on the drop down menu the is right beside the shape tool and select Fixed size. inside there put 315 x 315. now go to your document and put that shape in there. now on the same bar where the shape drop down menus were click on the first pen tool in that row. now right click on your shape and click on fill layer then right click again and select delete path to remove the shape.
now that you've made your shape go to the bottom of the layer palette and click on the FX button and go to stroke. make the color white and the size whatever you want, I put 5 for mine. then while you have that window open go to outer glow, this will make an all around shadow. here are the settings i used

Now for the background I don't know where you can find the original at but if you search scrapbook at deviantart i'm sure you can find something you like. CLICK HERE TO SEE WHAT THEY HAVE. [I used this one in my example.]
Now onto the text I just chose two fonts that I thought looked similar enough to the original. the first text i used was called Sverige Script and the second was called Market Deco. with these fonts I made a FX drop shadow layer on both of them here are the settings I used. click the names of the fonts to download them!

Now after you've gotten both of your gifs into one doc and have set on to lighten preferably open that folder and add a brightness & Contrast layer and the setting you need are up to you just mess with the settings while looking at your gif set until you get the right "shadowing" you want. then tween the end of the double gif just a couple times like four frames to the first frame, close up that folder and add your coloring and text.
then what the maker does to their gif sets is he extends the canvas size. (for reference the gif size are 300 x 140) so for the top gif you will need to go to Image > Canvas size, click on the arrow that is in the middle column in the bottom row and make the width 500 and the height 240. for the middle gif just do the 500 width and for the bottom gif do the exact same as the top gif but click on the arrow that is in the middle column but on the top row.
hopefully from there you should already know how to get the coloring out of the negative space and there you go!

#2 has a nice texture to it that you should consider using for your edit.
First I start off with the normal image. I recommend that you use a picture that could give off the vibe of a puppet. Like in the image I chose Emma Watson is laying kind of like a doll when they are just thrown and that's what I liked about the image.
Next lighten the skin with the dodge tool with the settings of range: midtones exposure: 100 and have a brush whatever size you like and a lower mid hardness.
next make a new layer and get the brush tool and the color black and make lines around the mouth like a ventriloquist doll. make the lines come out from the lips a little bit then go down to the chin so they have a little round curve by the lips instead of a straight line. For the image i was editing i set the layer to overlay then i duplicated it and set it to softlight then duplicated it again and set it to overlay then duplicated it once more and set it to multiply and lowered the opacity. obviously this might not work for your particular image so just mess with settings and opacity
then go back to your actual image and duplicate it then get the burn tool. the settings for the burn tool should be range: midtones exposure: 70% - 100%. then zoom into the part of the mouth where your lines are and use the brush on the inside of the lines and outside of the lines and around the chin area. then set your layers opacity to around 50%
duplicate that last layer, keep the burn tool and darken the area around the person in the edit just to make them stand out more. the settings are up to your and your image.
go to the top of all the layers then make a new vibrance adjustment by going to Layers > New adjustment layers > vibrance and lower the vibrance and saturation to get a softer color then make a mask layer, fill it with the color black, get the brush tool with the color white and go over the body and clothes but not the lips of the person.
YOU CAN STOP HERE IF YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH WHAT YOU HAVE OR GO ON TO THESE OPTIONAL STEPS OR JUST CHOOSE A COUPLE OF THESE STEPS TO DO.
To make the person look more doll like I added a few highlights. I made a new layer, got the brush tool with the color white and just put random lines on the person where I would think a doll would have high light. then I used the Gaussian blur and set the layer to softlight with a mid % opacity then i duplicated that layer and used the blur again.
next I went to Select > Select all. then Edit > Copy merged. then Edit > Paste and got the polygonal lasso tool and traced around the chin and lines i made around the mouth then through the middle of the lips where they part. then i got the move tool and moved the selected part down so it looked like the mouth was open. then i made a new layer got the brush tool with the color black and filled in the area of the open mouth.
Some dolls have rosey cheeks so i got a dark pink color with the brush tool and put color right on the apples of the cheeks then used the Gaussian blur a few times and lowered the opacity to about 50%
then i added a eyelash texture to make her have long bottom lashes. and there you go! that is how i would make a ventriloquist doll in Photoshop

First depending on your image you want to remove the background you can do this whatever way you are used to and feel most comfortable doing. I used the polygonal lasso tool as well as the magic wand tool. Now duplicate your image that you just erased the background to.
Then go to Filter > Filter Gallery and while in the gallery select Artistic > Cutout
Then depending on your photo mess with the settings but usually the settings I used were
for CS5 Number of layers: 8 / Edge Simplicity: 0/ Edge fidelity: 1 - 3 (depends on photo)
for CS4 Number of layers: 8 / Edge Simplicity: 3/ Edge fidelity: 1 - 3
(i put two different settings because I tired it out in both and they were both different!)
This will now be your base for your vector. and you can choose which details you want to keep and what you want to look.
A must is to remove the facial features. get the eyedropper tool and select one of the colors on the face that you think would look best as the main face color. then go to Layer > New > Layer and with the brush tool that isn't too soft go over the face.
if you feel like the face shape isn't exactly right just make the cutout fact invisible, look at the original layer and compare. if it indeed isn't just get the polygonal lasso tool or the pen tool and trace along the face then fill that selection and go back to the cutout layer. I acutally had to do this a few times because cutout doesnt get ALL the colors right and they bleed into each other. & don't worry if it looks a bit weird these vectors do sometimes look strange.
From there you do the same for the arms or neck and hair, get the eye dropper tool and select the best of the colors and make a new layer with that on it. I would say it's okay to use more than one color for shading or highlighting purposed. and then it really depends in the image and the type of clothes the person is wearing like i said you don't have to give away all the detail like most vectors. it is also a good idea to see how they look when you drag some of the new layers behind the older ones. In this particular edit i dragged the next layer under the face layer and it looked much better.
Now for the hair while you made a one color over layer i think its best to lower the opacity if on the cutout layer some shine or different tones come through. but really just a little bit not too much.
While cutout chose the colors you can always change them! if you dont like how a color looks like its too light or too dark just make the layer and cover it with the cutout color then get the brightness/contrast adjustment and play with the settings or when you get the eye dropper tool and dont like the color just click on the color and move it around in the color picker and try it out

then for the final touch I like to take the original layer and drag it all the way to the top then set it to darken or color burned, depending on the photo and really lowering the opacity so a little detail from the real photo comes through just remember to always erase the face features like the eyes, nose, and mouth.
as you can see there is just a certain shading and detail you can get with the original layover that you can't with a regular vector.
and that's pretty much it! not too much too it just have to make many layers but i find this SO much easier than the traditional vector.

that tumblr user is no long available so here is the edit they asked about
first a good thing to think about is what screencaps you’re gonna use that it would be appropriate for this type of edit. once you know what you want to edit get three different screen caps.
Since the maker of that edit did harry potter and chose a location, a vehicle, and just a cap of something relative. so I recommend you choose the same kind of screen caps for yours BUT you don’t have to. I chose to do back to the future for this example because there was a location, a vehicle and i knew i could find something else to put with it.
here is what screencaps i'll be using:
First make a new document by going to File > New and make the dimensions 500w x 602h
next get your location screen cap and crop it then using whatever tool of your liking remove the background. you can choose the magic wand tool, or a lasso tool, or the select > color range. I use all three depending on the screencap. With your tool remove all the background. for this tutorial and edits its gonna have to be a screencap that has sky above the location so you can use the top of the building or whatever as the focus point. after you've removed your background move it to the new document you had made and position it somewhat in the middle. now duplicate it, set it to invisible, and drag it under the original layer for something later
what you do now is you create a gradient to go on top of the location screencap. get the eye dropper tool and select a color on the screencap that you would want to cover the bottom. then go to Layer > new fill layer > gradient and mess with the settings. usually you’re going to want to lower the scale number to under 70. the angle is all up to you and click on the gradient preview and move the white marker to the right until you feel like it covers the bottom and a little bit of the screencap but you can still see detail.
then go to Select > Select all. the Edit > copy merged. then Edit > paste. and set that new image to screen and lower the opacity to what you want (remember to make the white background invisible when you do this). now depending on color scheme you want of this edit get a color for your foreground and choose white as your background then go to Layer > new adjustment layer > gradient map. Now hover over the line between the first gradient you made and the background image while holding down the ALT button when you see two circles click on it so that this gradient will only effect that image only. then do this for the other layers you just made for this background image.
Now select the duplicated background image that you set in invisible earlier, make it visible. then get the move tool and position it in a way that its peeking out from the original background image. then go to Image > Adjustments > exposure and depending on if you want it all black go to the left on the first adjustments bar and that usually does it. if you want it all white then you might have to mess with all the adjustment bars to get it all white.
Next make a new layer and position it above all the layers then get the eye dropper tool and and select the color on the bottom of the background image (basically the color you used for the gradient map) and get the brush tool and fill in any open space on the bottom of your edit.
From the color you chose for your background screencap to be pick a complimenting color that is also opposite from it for your background. when you've done that just fill in the first layer that came with your document, the background layer.
NOW ONTO THE IMAGES.
Now that you’ve got your background done its time to add your other screencaps. which ever one you want to work with first, i chose the vehicle and i cropped around the image then with the polygonal lasso tool i removed the background. then I re-sized it so that it would small enough for the edit. I right clicked on the layer i selected duplicate layer and in the destination drop down menu i chose the document that now had my background. now I moved it around and then used a gradient map to make it a more tan type sepia tone (idk?) then i duplicated this image and with the eye dropper tool i chose the color of the gradient map that was on the building image for the foreground and the background. then I went to Image > adjustments > gradient map and it made the duplicated layer the same color as the background image. then i dragged it under the original vehicle layer and got the move tool and had it peek out just like i did with the building screencap.
I then did the exact same thing to the next image except this time i chose the background solid color for the silhouette that peeks out from behind it. after that i chose some textures to put on top of it you can find them HERE
then I added a text quote from the movie, using different fonts for each line and changing the color in each line a bit and added a drop shadow to the text. also made a new text layer for the quotation symbol then just like all the other images i duplicated it, made it a slightly different color and made it peek out from behind the original one. then i messed with different settings to try and get a better edit all around and this is the final product!

First I made a new image by going to File > New and entered the needed size of my banner and then filled the space with an all black base like so i looked like this:
Then I added a animal print texture to the document by pinkblossum.org and set the opacity to 58% but then I put that texture into a group and set the group opacity to 51 like this:
Then I added a gradient fill layer by going to Layer > new fill layer > gradient. I made a black gradient that had settings of Style: reflected, angle: 0, scale: 62. to get exactly what i have, click on the gradient preview that has the drop down menu and move the black marker to this position:
your document and should look like this:
Then I started to add the pictures I wanted. I used two photos of the singer P!NK. heres what i did to the first image (all layers set to normal):

next I added textures to the document. most of them I messed with so much i dont know which one it is now, or i made myself. here is what the banner looks like so far without textures:
some of the textures I made was just using a large brush and putting areas of color on the banner then used motion blur on them the colors being #5ffff9 and #fffd5f. With motion blur settings: angle 40ish, distance around 270-300. one other texture i made from a arrow shape tool you can learn how to make HERE. some of the other textures I used can be found HERE & HERE & HERE is the one that i messed with so i dont know what it originally looked like.
No matter what kind of banner you’re using try out different textures even if you dont think it will work and just mess with different settings and manipulating them to make your banner have more depth. here is what the banner looks like now with my textures and with the textures that i supplied the link to (and the one that i dont remember how it got there)
And lastly I added text. I went to DAFONT.com and looked for a font that looked smokey and i used the warp tool and some smokey brushes and this is what it looks like with it
as you can see on my blog the final product has a gif smoke on it and perhaps ill teach that another time but this was just to get you guys started.

It was first established as a smaller site but was officially made into a forum on August 15th of 2010. With it’s birthday coming up next month, I hoped that it would gain at least 5,000 members.
