Crossing Borders: André Masson
André Masson fled Vichy France for America with assistance from the Emergency Rescue Committee. He settled in a Connecticut farmhouse from 1941 to 1945, where he painted this work. “American energy fascinated me,” Masson explained, “I painted the power of the earth.” His paintings had a profound effect on a generation of younger artists who would become known as the Abstract Expressionists. Learn about Masson and other immigrant artists: mo.ma/crossingborders. Our digital exhibition “Crossing Borders,” presented as part of our #CitizensBorders initiative, showcases works from MoMA’s collection by artists who immigrated to the U.S., often as refugees in search of safe haven. Explore all the works at mo.ma/crossingborders [André Masson (b. France, 1896-1987). “Meditation on an Oak Leaf.” c.1942. Tempera, pastel and sand on canvas.
