I want to say thank you. [//don’t reblog!]
Watching the fourth series unfold was a disappointment to say the least. I have put a lot of myself into this show, I have loved it, I have defended it, I have given it credit for showing me who I am and giving me the courage and the confidence to be the person and the artist I want to be. And I had so much faith that I would be given the story that I deserved, and that world would finally have a character as iconic and as adored as Sherlock Holmes who is brilliant, clever, human - and queer.Â
And I’m sad, of course, that we were cheated that opportunity. I’m angry to see a show that I adored not only deliver a flat, ambiguous conclusion to a relationship I felt so deeply for, but to see a brilliantly crafted show reduced to convoluted twists written by arrogant and ignorant creators.Â
But I want to thank you. Because the story we built together, the version of Sherlock Holmes that we uncovered, the love between these two men that we celebrated, saved me. I was scared. I was a teenager who was scared to admit to herself who she really was and how she really felt, and I was able to see those things in Sherlock. I watched Sherlock struggle to let himself be vulnerable, I watched him fall in love. And all of us, all of you, we wrote a reality where a man who once saw sentiment as a weakness learned to love himself enough to admit that he had feelings for his best friend. We wrote a Sherlock who knew that he deserved to be happy and was not ashamed to ask for it.
Our Sherlock helped me realize that despite being something of a workaholic, despite being a little cautious when it comes to opening up, despite being gay, I can still find love. I can still have the epic romance that heterosexual couples have been getting in film and television since the very dawn of the medium. I owe so much of my self discovery as an artist, a storyteller, and a person to the narrative that we found.
Thank you.
We are the future of film and TV. I want all of you to realize that we have so much power, we are so smart, and we are strong enough to make this right. We will break barriers ourselves, we will grow up and go out to create content that we want to see, that represents us. We will start the revolution without them and it will be better and more beautiful than any of what we’ve been given up until this point.Â
That being said, I am months away from graduating college and I’m getting ready to find a job, move away, be an adult. I think it’s time for me to close this chapter. I don’t regret a single thing, I’ve loved drawing them and sharing them with you and I’m so, so glad I found this little niche of the internet to let loose and geek out. I don’t know what I’ll do with this blog, but I don’t think I’ll be updating here anymore. this blog is ready to retire.
Even if there’s a fifth season, even if there’s a surprise fourth episode that proves my farewell to bbc johnlock premature, it’s not about the show for me anymore. You made this experience worthwhile, and I will not stop loving Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.
lol always a sucker for the dramatic tl;dr love you, PEACEÂ
