Last post gone a little stagnant so I'm makin' a new one and I'm doing it right this time instead of slapping some links on a vent post. Long story short I'm a trans woman in the ignorant, provincial backwater known as Oklahoma and every second I spend here is a living nightmare of persecution, poverty, and desperation. I am incredibly depressed and traumatized by my experiences since coming out and I've been stripped of my HRT, my career, and my dignity. My lowkey financially abusive parents* are too busy getting a messy divorce to help me get out of dodge and up towards the PNW.
*they forced me to quit my job last year and ive been without income since even though they knew i was saving up for this eventuality. long fucking story but ive been suffering for it believe you and me. turns out just being supportive of your gender identity doesnt necessarily mean your parents wont fuck you over for other, more esoteric reasons.
As a consequence of that messy divorce, I won't have a place to stay soon and the house is a total minefield of heightened emotion. So that's really made things extra stressful and unstable for me and I'd quite like to leave now :)
I've got a car and a few different options of places that have been offered to me around Seattle and Tacoma. Ain't my first time moving cross-continent either so I'm prepared for the reality of things; I'm talking to an org right now about getting help with gas n getting a job n all that messy logistical stuff. Regardless I still need a little cash for misc expenses (getting new glasses so I can drive safely, paying for medication copays, a haircut so i can do job interviews, rice&beans while i apply for SNAP, etc) so I'm trying to raise a modest sum of $2000 to start out- if you'd help out with a donation or a share I'd super appreciate it.

"protect the dolls" isnt for the white suburban-living tgirls in the imperial core it has and always will be for the Black and Brown trans girls accross the globe whos lives are cut short by racist transmisogynists and transmisogynoirists
i understand the intent with this post is to uplift trannies with under visibilized identities on tumblr, but i just don't feel that these type of statements, 'protect the dolls', achieve anything practical, regardless of whether the ostensibly white suburban-living interlocutor thinks it's addressing themselves or the 'right' ppl. like what does it mean for it to be "for" someone?
it's fundamentally always going to be a rather shallow articulation of support regardless of who it is for bc it's an english slogan. that the subject it is alluding to is trans and predominantly racialized is only intelligible if you're familiar with american ballroom culture/exist in a space where that has significant cultural cachet (an american website)
to pretend these associations, doll = trans woman, are broadly intelligible outside the anglosphere, specifically parts of it which are almost analoguous to/an extension of the imperial core; to argue that the 'dolls' refers to marginalized trannies outside of said english speaking core, by itself betrays a form of cultural hegemony that assumes american gay history and the slang deriving from it as universal. it's a perfectly performative statement befitting ppl wearing it as a t-shirt, i don't see the need to try to redeem it like it's much deeper than that
It also assumes that even amongst us white, western TMA people, some of us wouldn't shoot you in the head for calling us "dolls". Not everyone inside the anglosphere even wants to recognise or associate with this "ballroom culture" junk. TME filth will literally call us anything other than women. I don't want that rancid fucking statement at all, and I wish people would shut the fuck up saying it
"Doll" is intracommunity in origin. It's fine if you don't want it used for you but it's completely over the line to denigrate an entire predominantly Black and Latin subculture and its language while invoking the imagery of gun violence, especially when the people who came up with it are other trans women, trans women of color at that.
And while as a Desi queer person I understand the overall the point @travestirsi was making about USAmerican cultural hegemony, as part of that there's kind of a thread of dismissiveness towards the relevsnce of ballroom culture in a way that can unspool this sort of more blatant anti-Blackness and racism. The term is undeniably USAmerican in origin, but the phrasing suggests a kind of insular bubble around it and forceful proliferation of it when the opposite is more often the case.
Terms originating in AAVE regularly get spread globally to such a degree and in such a way many who use them know roughly what they mean (if that) but have no idea where they came from, without the originators having a say in it most of the time. Of course the degree to which people have access to Black USAmerican culture in specific is not unrelated to USAmerica's general cultural dominance, but this sort of hyperrelevance is a symptom of the global exploitation of Black USAmerican culture under imperialism, not a hegemony Black USAmerican culture has over the rest of the world.
It's true OP's scope was both too narrow and too broad—it's a generically positive slogan coined by a white British guy to sell T-shirts that just doesn't make sense to read as excluding any trans women, even the ones who may face fewer forms of systemic violence than others, but ought to center the Black and Latina USAmerican women the term originated from—but I don't believe the slogan or term need to (or even can) be universally understood, or that the language and cultural roots of a term inherently present that much of a barrier to understanding it or to who it can refer to.
No one's born knowing everything, not even members of the subculture in question. I don't think that means you can't learn or that you have a pass to be incurious about cultures that aren't directly "relevant" if you do speak English, nor does it mean the sentiments behind this specific slogan and term can only be directed to those who speak English. I don't think you need to be a direct participant to a conversation to be the subject of it to some extent, even if it is just sentiment and won't materially reach you at the end of the day.
