Finished volume 2. I was up all night rethinking the entire show from a one-sided byler point of view. And there's one thing, one thought, that was just so weird from that perspective. If byler is one-sided this season, then what the frig is Mike's arc?
No I'm serious. Okay, in past seasons sometimes our main characters didn't have direct character arcs, just point blank missions that they achieved by the end of the season. But in season 5? The last of the show? EVERYONE has an arc. EVERYONE is overcoming SOMEthing. I mean for pete's sake Mike's MOM has an arc. And these characters don't just have established struggles that we're watching them grow through, they have GOOD established struggles that we're watching them grow through. Like seriously. I've found these stories so engaging. You can't show me Dustin's beautifully written breakdowns, Jancy's heartfelt confession scene, HOLLY who hasn't even been a proper CHARACTER until recently growing into everyone's new favourite, and DEREK — and then show me Mike. Who's over here fading into the wallpaper behind him.
I mean... is this guy not a main character? No no no, I'm being too generous..... IS THIS GUY NOT THE MAIN CHARACTER????? I mean do the writers just not like him? I was so proud to see him actually doing things in volume 1. Volume 2 though it seems he's back to playing a supporting role. I mean mate why is this guy's face the second or third biggest on the poster when literally every other character has had more substance than he has. Is he only here to play will they won't they with Will and touchy feely with El? So far his greatest contributions have been motivating them supporting their powers. But what about him? He has had absolutely no established internal struggles. Now that. Is a dull character.
Unless... literally in the finale — which is a very weird choice as is — we have a plot centered around him. Him. And his feelings for Will. We've done everything we can do with Will and his self-acceptance and etc I think. So that's done. Now this guy can just love himself with or without Mike. Cool cool cool cool. Okay now let's just give Mike some crazy reveal and make up for his lack of character last minute. At least then. I'd sort of get it. It could be.. like.. a surprise. Still a strange writing choice but the alternative is literally just that he's a joke character and was only ever created to stand there and look pretty. To take on tasks that you could interchangeably give to literally any other character.
And, I do not think he's going to be integral to El in the finale. She's planning to sacrifice herself, which could've definitely warranted Mike's input, but I get the gist that this is being set up as something that Hopper has to confront. I mean really, who are you more interested in seeing respond to El's choice, Mike or Hop? We can all safely say that El and Hopper have been set up to overcome this particular hurdle together.
Will? Will's arc is sort of incomplete. He hasn't confessed his crush. And this is a reaction the Duffer's know we're waiting to see. Why leave us in suspense?
"Hey Mike, the crush, it was you."
"Thank you for telling me Will. You're my best friend. And we'll always be friends.
And the reason I didn't hug you when we reunited that one time but can hug you now is just cause I was a little awkward.
And the reason I asked you about your painting only to interrupt you when you started to explain your painting is just cause I'm a little awkward.
And the reason I made sure you knew that we're friends twice is just cause that's a random thing I do sometimes for dramatic effect. Srry I was mainly worried about my gf.
And that scene where I apologized for my actions wasn't flirty at all.
Friends talk to each other like that all the time. You can image Dustin and Steve talking to each other like this too right? See? Platonic.
And the gay jokes this season?
They were just for the funsies. You see the writers like leaving gay easter eggs for fans to find for no efing reason, but still don't really have the energy to write me a personality yet. And that makes sense.
And I was always going to reject you btw.
Just so you know. And that's not wasted time at all. Fans will be satisfied with that conclusion."
