i cannot guarantee this blog will be at all active, but i wanted a place to ramble and/or rant about my rain world interpretations (and, sometimes, how i dislike certain aspects of fanon, because im salty), along with a place to analyze certain aspects of the text. er. game. you know what i mean.

i simply struggle with tone and hold my opinions very strongly. also this is my blog and as such i post my unfiltered thoughts, as they are not directed at anyone and--if need be--you can just block me if i make you uncomfortable. in fact, you are actively encouraged to do so! i won't judge, lord knows i've blocked for less

so is Rain World's title actually a play on the RNA world hypothesis or am I too far gone

something i've been thinking about wrt my personal distaste for downpour is that, like... the reason i like rain world is its seamless blending of a simple wild animal, armed with only its players intelligence and far from the top of the food chain, just trying to survive in an urban environment constructed for god-knows-what reason, you can wonder, you will not know, because you are a beast and for you this is just another environment, with the more symbolic, spirital, and alien aspects of its world: an urban pop-art aesthetic with dandelions growing through the cracks mirrored, enhanced, and complemented by a shifting esoteric borderline-psychedelic golden undertone to create a feel i can only describe as "the world is melting and you are a subway rat". vanilla of course has more of the former and watcher more of the latter, but fundamentally they each strike their own balance and carry both themes.

however, downpour... doesn't really succeed at either? it is neither particularly animal - a lot of significance is placed on the slugcats themselves and they are greatly humanized, rather than being just another organism - nor particularly esoteric: the story feels very grounded, even compared to vanilla. downpour feels like it was written by someone who tried to Make Sense of the lore. it doesn't really have anything new to add, it sticks with what is clearly established within vanilla and doesn't really even toe the line of implied possibilities. the worst offender here imo is saint, because you can tell they tried to make something weird and trippy and Rain World and... didn't really succeed! the feel is off, and i didn't really understand how until i played watcher - i had some thoughts and ideas, yes, but it wasn't until the new dlc came out that it really clicked. It feels like fanfiction (because it is), not necessarily in terms of writing quality but because of how it plays with the lore, like someone who has read it but doesn't fully get it, trying to mimic the way it is made but just... not getting weird enough to feel like it really matches the original.
