hello, thank you! the gif layer that is coloured is actually a different gif layer from the black and white layer - i.e. they're not actually blended, but are duplicate layers. i've actually done a similar guide before here [x] (see the "base layer" and "circles" sections), just that for the recent haikyuu gifset, instead of clipping the gif to a circle, i clipped it to different shapes (crow, owl, eagle) instead

Firefam + ‘the greatest thing you’ll ever learn…’ quote Again, I love this quote, and I also loved including all the different types of relationships on the show. I always love blending colour with black and white, as you can see from these first two sets haha

The next few are sets I’ve created for various pscentral events. I love creating sets for these events because I always try to step outside my comfort zone and try new things!

Madney + vibrance  I love the colouring on this set, and I loved creating the gradient between the green and the blue. I remember spending ages trying to figure out the typography and tried a few different things but I like how it turned out in the end.

Hen Begins + pride colours  I had so much fun creating this set, from the colour to the typography, I was really happy with how it turned out.

When Harry Met Sally + comfort & team colours Apologies, this was actually posted to my main account but i really, really love this set. As soon as I heard the theme for this event I instant knew what I wanted to do, this movie just screams autumn/fall colours. I love the mix between colour and block and white, but also adding hints of orange to the black and white gifs. Also, I think this was the first set where I had a go at changing the background colour.

hi!! i’m sorry to ask, i’m very very new to editing, but how do you pastel edits like your icon without white washing? do you have any tips or anything? :O thank you!!

hello and thank you so much for your question!

i'm definitely no editing expert but i'm happy to explain my process behind the icon in question as well as some of the other icons i've been working on!

first, i just wanted to shout out a few great blogs that have tons and tons of resources and tutorials to help get you started with editing, like @usergif, @completeresources, @dailyresources, and @pscentral.

alright and now i'll go step by step below the cut to explain the coloring process! ♡

please keep in mind that i'm completely self-taught in photoshop but i've been editing & coloring for about nine years now, so i create all of my coloring myself. i recommend having at least a basic knowledge of how to color things in general, but if not i recommend some lighter/non-heavy duty psds (like those from @colorarepsd).

for reference, here is my current icon with the coloring overlayed the original image, so you might better visualize how this technique works.

i find that the most important and vital step to editing still images without whitewashing is to quick select all showing skin in the image and to duplicate that layer. this allows you to make the background, clothing, etc. all pale/pastel without completely washing out the skin. you can color however you like after this step.

for example, i open the base image and quick select all showing skin. this doesn't need to be perfect or seamless, so don't worry too much about it. it should look something like this.

i then duplicate the base image, keeping my selection intact. in the new layer copy, i delete the background so that the layers now look like this:

your base image should look completely unchanged. i then deselect the selection using that tool and proceed with coloring. to begin with, i add adjustment layers over both the original and the copy layer.

i add adjustments like hue/saturation, brightness/contrast, levels, etc in order to neutralize the yellow and to subtly desaturate the rest of the colors while making sure that red/magenta is still saturation. it is very important not to desaturate yellow/red too much in this step in order to make sure that you don't whitewash the image.

here are all of the adjustments that i used. (if you want me to go step by step through each one and what i did with it i can lol)

at this step, the icon looks like this, which is pretty but not quite as pale as i'd like!

next, i select the base layer and begin to add more adjustment layers to further make the image pale/pastel. this allows me to make the background as pale as i wish, like so:

these adjustments are all more extreme and severe as i don't have to worry about the skin color or if i'm whitewashing or not (since we have the layer above that is not being affected by the lower layers). now my icon looks like this!

this method works very well not just for poc edits but also for any sort of situation where you might want to preserve the original skintone. because there's adjustments over the copied layer and the base layer and i didn't desaturate the red any, the selection is seamless.

it's possible that you might be able to tell where you've selected and in that case, i recommend taking the time to select the skin showing more carefully. in most cases, however, that's really not necessary.
