What are your thoughts on the allegations against BØRNS??
mm. i don’t know how to necessarily go about answering this without words being twisted or perspectives being skewed. so, i’ve stayed quiet about the situation for a couple days weighing it all out.
I think all I’m going to say is that cancel culture is out of absolute fucking control. how hive-mind mentalities and witch hunts swirl over situations with no solid foundation can cause irreparable damage is terrifying. there needs to be a better way to handle situations instead of further encouragement due to how “stan” culture operates. it sorta seems like cancel culture focuses on the black & white and not the grey. you’re either full throttled cancelled or you’re full throttled stanned.
Whether the allegations are true or not, the issue here is “cancelling” and burning those at the stake without getting all the facts and both sides of the story and analyzing the situation without bias towards the musician or the girls coming forward just because they came forward. “Stan” culture more or less accepts whatever is in front of them and they act without questioning it. In my opinion, the internet/social media has only made this worse. Rumors and accusations get spread like wildfire. they cause a sensation that the truth never illicits.
The issue I always have with circumstances like these is that people are completely torn apart for not blindly eating what they’re being fed because there isn’t a concrete foundation for the claims or further evidence that validates it, but these accusations damage and further invalidate real acts of assault in the industry (not that I’m saying it isn’t possible for it to have happened here), and it is sad. A few stories can cause an influx of hive-mind behavior by this stan culture that onslaughts these artists with labels like “predator” or ive even seen “rapist” that is highly destructive for all involved when there’s nothing to confirm the claims which then causes knee-jerk reactions out of others. it’s a massive problem that is toxic and fueling the normalization of witch hunts. it further encourages toxic social media persuasion.
It’s almost like the phrase isn’t “innocent until proven guilty” anymore but “guilty until proven innocent.”
Regardless, I am sorry and my heart does go out to anyone who was hurt or mistreated by him or other musicians. I’m sincere when I say that. I just think with how easy dms can be photoshopped (as i did myself a few hours ago to prove just how easy it is), and with the information presented, there is a lot being dramatized and thrown around here that is over the line for what actually occurred if DMs and stories are to go by. It just reads like fuckboy behavior of a musician. It doesn’t justify using women for sex, but it isn’t new to know that musicians sleep around on tour without attachments -whether that be with fans or with groupies.
I dunno, the fact that the word rape has been brought into the picture is beyond WILD to me.
Nonetheless, I’m tired of artists like Drake and Post Malone and every other artist who sings about fucking around with fans both of age and underage or dating 17-18 year old girls (Drake is LITERALLY telling 14 year old girls he misses them) getting passes for that behavior because of their MASSIVE followings when allegations like this one here is legal and consensual even if emotionally shit.
however, whoever approved of BØRNS statement should’ve thought more on how things needed to be worded (regardless if true) so it hit every mark. The use of apology even if it was something like “i apologize if i hurt others in the process of any of these relationships or rumors circulating” would’ve fanned a bit of the flame.
So, in saying all that, that’s my stand on the issue and I’m sorry if someone disagrees I’m just highly uncomfortable with how cancel culture and internet culture as a whole handles allegations.
