Global social media: case study China
Like many others I thought that China was missing out on social media... I have never been to China before but the people that I do know that have gone have always talked about it is hard to contact people from home because Facebook is not allowed in China. However they do have social media but they have platforms that are not well known outside of China (Swinburne Online 2015). In fact the country has the most active social media population in the world with 91 percent of people that were questioned saying they had logged on within the last six months (Chiu, Lin & Silverman 2012).

This image shows the Social media sites that are banned in China and the ones that are not. I like many others have never seen the sites that are popular to use as social media in China.
Chiu, Lin & Silverman (2012) state that "Social media is exploding worldwide, and China is leading the way." I do not find this statement true. Yes, china has more people on their social media platforms than the rest of the world, but they are limiting themselves, they do not join in on the rest of the worlds social media platforms therefore can not be interacting and learning other things from other cultures or keep in contact with other people around the world. They also have not taken advantage of marketing and advertising online as much as other countries around the world so businesses are missing out on what seems to be an easy way to get your product or service out there (Crampton 2011).
Finding out that China does in fact use social media and it is extremely popular was a big surprise to be, I think the fact that they can ban the likes of Facebook, Twitter and youtube is holding them back not making them lead the way.
