Vagueness is of much importance of the topic of waste in our society. We live in the era of consumers consumption, and almost everything we buy with throw away. The vagueness of waste is where it all ends up? if not recycled then it will end up in landfills, or burnt into our atmosphere or debris in our oceans. Almost 99 percent of everything we buy becomes waste within six weeks of purchase.
If we were supposed to keep all our own waste and garbage, then will we produce less? of course. No one wants to be reminded of what we use and dispose of.
We live in a society of consumption and disposal. Things are not made to last as they used to. Bought and disposed of, with no consciousness of where it was made, who made it, and where it will end up once it’s been used or consumed. I experimented with the vagueness associated to the unknowns of waste and disposal. They are issues in society that are disconnected for our lives, but should be of more importance.
Identity and our waste. What we consume should become who we are. Leave no trace, no footsteps.

On my search to find debris for my artwork, i came across a microwave laying in the grass, almost blending in with the tall shrubbery. It had looked as if it was there for many weeks, I walked past, with a little hesitation, and quietly ran back to it fetch it. People have become so lazy at the sake of “convenience”. Why throw away a microwave, in the middle of the street? And leave it for someone else to pick up?
In this artwork i wanted to play on irony, by covering it with mixed media of fashion models and everything in the “fake” or “retouched” world.
In this first image I used photography and illustration to convey the meaning of this artwork. The arrangement of these trash cans places a significance as i wanted them to display an “army” like aesthetic. As waste and disposal grow each year, so do our landfills and the detriment it causes to our planet. Not only will it turn around and harm the human species but more importantly it was cause irreparable damage to other animals too. I used photoshop to create an army of trash cans, lined up ready for destruction. They are all banded together by the use of poka dots. I used poka dots as a ironic gesture. Poka dots are harmless in my opinion, yet when you clump them together, they seem to spread and “infect” much like garbage on this planet. While doing research for this project, Zoe and I came up with a proposal to start a composting bin in the Veggie Garden.
Image 3 (Shrine of Trash, Colour)
A shrine devoted to the beloved waste of our lives. Our world revolves around consuming and disposing without even a thought of where it will end up. On the topic of Vagueness, i want to present the ideas of our trash not of disposal but to embrace it.
This set up was created made out of local waste (from my rubbish bin), all sourced with in a 20 meter distance. A sustainable approach to material usage, as all of these items are now being recycled. The use of photography/ assemblage were techniques to create a “shrine” like display.
I wanted to play with the irony in this piece, by using mixed materials. The jewelry symbolizing wealth and stature, and the trash representing disposability. I chose to place them in the same scene to demonstrate that trash can be just as valuable as jewels.
