WELCOME

Inspired by Michael Bierut's "100 DAY PROJECT" at the Yale School of Art, I created a "100 Day Gratitude Blog." I decided that if my heart was to be full of grief, I was choosing gratitude to be its companion on the journey. This blog became my rally cry. ~Emilie Miller

GUIDELINES for Michael Bierut's "100 DAY PROJECT" at the Yale School of Art:

"Do a design operation that you are capable of repeating every day. Do it every day between today and... the last day of the project, by which time you will have done the operation one hundred times.

The only restrictions on the operation you choose is that it must be repeated in some form every day, and that every iteration must be documented for eventual presentation. The medium is open, as is the final form of the presentation on the 100th day."

DAY 99: For the burger I had and the view I had whilst eating it, both absolute perfection. Burger was rib eye chuck served with pork confit, pork belly, raclette cheese, caramelized onions, & finished with a cornichon atop a toothpick. The view was Lincoln Center at sunset and then the night--illuminated by the ballet, the opera, the symphony--the fountain that glows from within. Those mighty mighty Chagalls. A 71 degree night in July. Excessive perfection. Thank you.

DAY 97:

First it was the dark sky and the wind. And then the lighting--across the night. When the rain came down hard and sideways, we went inside, we watched the storm. After the power went out the 4th time, it never returned. The sky flashed and flickered like a disco dance floor. I took a hurricane lamp with me to bed, reading the last chapter of my book in the soft glow. By the time I blew out the lamp, the storm had stopped. The world was quiet. Thank you summer night.

DAY 95: These summer skies fill me with a repeated and infinite refrain: thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you ... And for my father's visit to NYC. Quality time, perfect weather, and those singers,wearing black, holding megaphones, wading in fountains.

DAY 94: For this perfect moment: Feet up Miraculous sky Sun set Views of the Hudson River & Upper West Side September weather in July Outdoor space in NYC Quality time with family "People say that what we're all seeking is a meaning for life. I don't think that's what we're really seeking. I think that what we're seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive. DAY 92: For my little ice plant, which today, I noticed was growing. It is a beautiful thing to watch something grow. And I've never met a plant I couldn't kill, so I've decided to feel especially accomplished today. And for the kind woman at the florist who told me the best way to water house plants is to periodically place them in basin filled with a small amount of water: "It's simple. They will know exactly what they need."

DAY 90:

For the pioneers. For the thinkers, the innovators, the trailblazers. For the moonwalkers who dare to dream outside the bounds of the known universe. And for Carl Sagan, who articulated the wonder of space and the wonder of earth like no other: “Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. DAY 87: The sunset at Pier 25. Dancing in the light. The unbridled joy of the last day of camp. Those clouds over the World Trade. And earlier that guy who stopped me on the street for the sole purpose of telling me he appreciated that I looked serene in a sea of people who looked stressed out. Thank you.

For the man at Bed, Bath, & Beyond who convinced me to buy the large Vornado air circulator. You have made my dreams come true. I can dream because I can sleep. I can sleep because my apartment, once a convection oven, is now a breezy paradise. Infinite gratitude man!
