Starbucks pledged to hire refugees and conservatives are boycotting. Let’s show them support with our wallets. 

The scoop from NPR

Starbucks Chairman and CEO Howard Schultz says his company plans to hire 10,000 refugees in the next five years in the 75 countries where it does business.

In a letter to current employees on Sunday, Schultz said the company would "start this effort here in the U.S. by making the initial focus of our hiring efforts on those individuals who have served with U.S. troops as interpreters and support personnel in the various countries where our military has asked for such support."

Day 15.

Stop Steve Bannon. Call the Senate Committee on Homeland Security

Bannon sitting the National Security Council is horrifying. But it can be stopped. 

The skinny from Slate: 

President Trump’s executive order giving Steve Bannon a seat on the National Security Council’s Principals Committee is an assault on common sense and tradition—that much is obvious. It also appears to be a violation of federal law.

According to Title 50 of the U.S. Code, Section 3021, which established the National Security Council, it “shall be composed of” the president; the vice president; the secretaries of state, defense, and energy; and “the secretaries and undersecretaries of other executive departments and of the military departments, when appointed by the President by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, to serve at his pleasure.

As the president’s chief political strategist, Bannon is not a secretary or undersecretary of any department. Nor, as a member of the White House staff, has he been confirmed by the Senate. So he is not eligible to serve on the NSC, and if that’s the case, he is doubly ineligible to sit on its Principals Committee—the assembly of Cabinet secretaries and department heads (sometimes including the president) that discusses and makes decisions on high-level U.S. foreign and military policy.

Be sure to tell the committee that you believe no individual whose primary responsibility is political in nature should be allowed on the NSC or authorized to attend its meetings.

Day 14

Attend events hosted by your Representatives

Members of Congress like to host events in their home districts to connect with their constituents. It’s about time we show up to those. Remember how successful Tea Party activists were?. MOCs need to know where their constituents stand and these face-to-face interactions can have more impact than calling their DC offices. 

But when? And where? Our friends at Town Hall Project 2018 are constantly updating a list of upcoming town hall events and meetings hosted by MOCs.

Day 13

Submit a comment on the Dakota Access pipeline's environmental impact statement

Time to stand with standing rock. What this impact statement is all about in the words of the Sierra Club: 

Attorneys representing the Dakota Access Pipeline recently tried to prevent the environmental review process from moving forward by seeking a Temporary Restraining Order from the federal court. Their resistance to this environmental review and public comment period confirms what we already know: the Dakota Access Pipeline poses a serious threat to Indigenous rights, biodiversity, water, and the environment. The 1,168-mile Dakota Access Pipeline, if completed, would carry 450,000 barrels of fracked oil every day through four states. It would cut through communities, farms, sensitive natural areas, wildlife habitat, and tribal lands like the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's ancestral lands. It would also cross under the Missouri River just upstream of the Tribe's drinking water supply, where a spill would mean a serious threat to the Tribe's health, culture, and way of life.

Day 12

Support the EACH Woman Act!

What is this legislation all about? The summary from All* Above All

Congresswomen Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), alongside Pro-Choice Caucus Co-Chairs Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and 100 other members of Congress reintroduced the EACH Woman Act with the support of 82 women’s health, rights, and justice advocacy organizations. 

The EACH Woman Act makes a meaningful change for women and their families, creating two important standards for reproductive health.

1)  the bill respects that every woman should be able to make her own decisions about pregnancy. If a woman gets her care or insurance through the federal government, she will be covered for all pregnancy-related care, including abortion.

2) the EACH Woman Act prohibits political interference with decisions of private health insurance companies to offer coverage for abortion care. Federal, state and local legislators will not be able to interfere with the private insurance market to prevent insurance companies from providing abortion coverage.

Day 11

Find out if your Senator has spoken out against the ban. Thank them for doing so or pressure them to resist.

The US Senate has a lot of powerful tools to fight back against Trump’s executive order. Call your Senator. Thank them if they’ve already spoken out against the ban. Encourage them to do even more. Push them if they’ve stayed silent. 

Here is what to ask of when you call your Senator thanks to Indivisible. 

Withhold Consent. Any single Senator can ‘withhold consent’—a procedural maneuver that puts Senate business on pause for days at a time. When Senate Leadership asks for “unanimous consent” to move forward with business as usual, your Senator should say “I Object.” This will dramatically slow Trump’s other priorities from moving forward until he lifts this odious ban. #WithholdConsent

No Justice, No Bills. Your Senator should commit to filibustering EVERY bill that comes up in the Senate until Trump’s illegal, unconstitutional Executive Order is rescinded. By filibustering, your senator can stop all of Trump’s future legislative priorities. The ONLY bill that should be allowed to come to a vote is a bill ending the Muslim and refugee ban. #NoJusticeNoBills

Day 10

Donate to the ACLU. They are fighting back against Trump’s discriminatory Executive Order. 

How they got a stay against Trump’s order:

The ACLU with other organizations immediately sprang into action and challenged Trump’s executive order in court as violating the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the U.S. Constitution. We immediately got a hearing and argued our case. At around 9 p.m., Federal District Court Judge Ann M. Donnelly issued a stay, blocking President Trump’s discriminatory policy from taking effect and preventing refugees and immigrants from being deported. She did not rule on the constitutionality of the order, but for now, the men and women who would have been deported are safe.

Day 9

Resist Trump’s immigration ban. Support organizations that support refugees in the US. 

Trump’s latest is Executive Order is hate-filled and xenophobic. It is already having devastating effects on refugees and immigrants already in the United States, let alone the ones trying to get here. 

The facts from CNN:  

 Trump barred citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US for at least the next 90 days by executive order, which a senior White House official said later Friday is likely just a first step toward establishing a broader ban. 

The human side from NYTimes 

Shortly after noon on Saturday, Hameed Khalid Darweesh, the interpreter who worked on behalf of the United States government in Iraq, was released. After nearly 19 hours of detention, Mr. Darweesh began to cry as he spoke to reporters, putting his hands behind his back and miming handcuffs.

“What I do for this country? They put the cuffs on,” Mr. Darweesh said. “You know how many soldiers I touch by this hand?”

Day 8

Support your local abortion fund. 

President Trump and the Republican controlled Congress are already taking drastic steps to take away our reproductive rights. On top of that, today thousands will flock to DC to “March for Life.” What is one way to fight back? Donate to and volunteer with your local abortion fund. 

What is an abortion fund? The NNAF summary: 

An abortion fund is a organization that works to “remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access. Some of them work with clinics to help pay for your abortion. Some of them offer support such as transportation, childcare, translation, doula services, and somewhere to stay if you have to travel to get your abortion.” 

More and more women will need financial support as they attempt to retain autonomy over their bodies. Let’s help them out.

Prepare to help your neighbors who are immigrants.

The scoop from Reuters: 

President Donald Trump on Wednesday ordered construction of a U.S.-Mexican border wall and punishment for cities shielding illegal immigrants while mulling restoring a CIA secret detention program as he launched broad but divisive plans to reshape U.S. immigration and national security policy.

His directives on Wednesday signaled a tough action toward the roughly 11 million illegal immigrants already in the United States, most from Latin America, whom he already has threatened to deport.

If you are at risk, prepare yourselves now. If you’re not, prepare to help your neighbors.

Day 6

Put November 6, 2018 on your calendar. 

No, actually put it on your calendar. Its our first chance to elect federal officials during Trump’s presidency. The map is tough for Democrats and the least you could do is make a plan to vote that day. 

Why are these midterms so important? From Vox: 

the midterms will offer the first nationwide referendum on Donald Trump’s presidency. The whole House of Representatives, a third of the Senate, and most governorships will be at stake, along with hundreds of state legislative seats and local offices around the country. The better Democratic candidates perform, the more strength they’ll have to block legislation or nominees they don’t like in Trump’s third and fourth years.

Furthermore, the midterm results in the states will have a huge impact on the next redistricting process, even though it doesn’t kick off until 2021.

Support Greenpeace as they resist the Trump Administration’s efforts to harm our environment. 

Greenpeace is the leading independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and to promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future.

Today Greenpeace USA activists delivered  a message of love and progress to counter Trump's hate and ignorance at the White House.  Read more about their disruption in DC here

Day 3

Protect our healthcare, fight back against ACA repeal. 

From Families USA: 

President Trump issued an executive order on Friday that instructs federal agencies to use their existing powers to weaken the Affordable Care Act "to the maximum extent permitted by law." While the order is sending tremors throughout the health insurance market, alarming health care providers and consumers alike, it’s important to note what it does not do:

On its own the order cannot dismantle the Affordable Care Act.

The order does not change people’s ability to enroll in coverage and get subsidies for 2017 health plans. Current efforts to encourage people to enroll in marketplace coverage should continue and people should continue to sign up.

What the executive order does do is signal the start of Trumpcare and the new president’s continuing desire to repeal the ACA.

Keep the March momentum going and write to your Senator. 

Were you inspired by the Women’s March? Keep up your activism by following their action guide. The first step is to send a postcard to your Senator. They may be newly elected. Maybe they’ve been in office for 30 years. They need to hear from you! 

Live in DC without Representation? Write to the Senators in the state you were born, or where you went to college, or where you want to move one day.

Tell your Member of Congress to reject H.R. 7 

According to the National Women’s Law Center: 

if H.R. 7 were to become law, all women could lose insurance coverage that includes abortion. Already, policymakers deny abortion coverage from women who participate in federal insurance plans and health programs, like Medicaid or Peace Corps. H.R. 7 would make these restrictions permanent and would go after insurance coverage of abortion in the private market too.Without abortion coverage, many people would not be able to afford abortion care when they need it. Bans on insurance coverage of abortion are especially harmful for those like low-income women, women of color, and immigrant women that already face significant barriers to care.

If you’re like me, your woke friends have been sharing resources on how to resist Trump and his administration nonstop since inauguration. Some have been fighting this fight for years, others are newly inspired by the Women’s March. 

I made this tumblr to keep track of all the ways we can resist Trump, from calling our members of Congress to donating to progressive organizations to GOTV efforts for local races. 

My foray into activism came in 08 while I was riding the wave of hope and change. I’d like to keep that momentum going. After all, rebellions are built on hope.
