Happy St Patrick's Day
St Gertrude of Nivelles, patron Saint of cats, gardeners, and the mentally ill. Overlooked because of the coincidence that her feast day coincides with Saint Patrick's day.
"Cat-lovers, rejoice! While many of us will be celebrating St Patrick's Day, today is also St Gertrude's Day, known to many as the patron saint of cats. Although Gertrude was never formally canonized, in 1677 Pope Clement XII declared her universal feast day to be March 17."
Cats & Rodents: Her association with cats is a modern development (dating to roughly the 1980s), likely evolving from her historical role as a protector against rats and mice. In medieval art, she is often depicted with mice running up her staff or cloak, which were sometimes said to represent souls in Purgatory.
Travelers & Sailors: She is a patron of travelers because of her hospitality, and a legend holds that her name was invoked to banish a sea monster during a storm.
Gardeners: Her feast day, March 17, is traditionally seen as the first day of spring planting in parts of Europe.
Others: She is also invoked for those suffering from mental illness, fever, and by widows
