“May your heart be like mine,
and I will never fail this love of ours”
A mind all logic is like a knife all blade.
It makes the hand bleed that uses it.
————落日的光辉倾泻而下,如同熔化的黄金般绚烂耀眼,将天际染得一片璀璨温暖;
“Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.
Yet passionate affection is only vexed by heartless indifference.”
“Regardless of everything, I just can't move on from you. I love you still.〞
“I love you against reason, against principle, against hope, against myself, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be.”

Scientist × Foot Soldier ( pure love.)
Summary: After the war between zombies and plants came to an end, everyone laid down their hatred and lived together in peace. The world flourished. And so, the Foot Soldier at Zombie Headquarters began his long journey of pursuing the one he love
Written by Wuhe:This story was written for me by my best friend. She doesn’t really participate in fandoms, but she loves me. The original version didn’t highlight the characters’ personalities enough, so I told her how I wanted them to be. If there’s anything inappropriate or uncomfortable, please let me know.🥰
“Is that guy still not giving up?”
The one they spoke of stood in an empty space, eyes bright and sparkling as he followed a zombie in a lab coat.
“Scientist, please take my lunch box!”
The Scientist turned around abruptly.
“Dear Foot Soldier, training must be too easy these days, leaving you with time for such things.”
“Ah? Yes! I’ll go back to training right away—”
The Foot Soldier stuffed the lunch box into the Scientist’s arms, spun around, and ran off.
The Scientist looked at the box in his arms, then glanced at the gossiping zombies nearby. They scattered at once.
“He likes me… he doesn’t like me… he…”
The Foot Soldier sat on a bench in the park outside headquarters, plucking a plastic flower.
He pulled off the last petal and buried his face in his arms. But he stood up immediately.
“A zombie does not believe in such unscientific things. Hurry back to training.”
With that, he stood up and jogged toward the training ground.
After soft rustling, the Scientist walked over from nearby and sat where the Foot Soldier had been. The lunch box still rested on his lap. He bent down and picked up the flower.
“Hm. Who is so careless? Another plastic flower from the research department has been picked.”
“Scientist, please take these flowers!”
A voice echoed in the lounge early in the morning.
“Not again. Flowers are worse than brains.”
“Are you insulting me, or suggesting something?”
“Place your bets! Odds for them getting together are one to twenty-five!”
The Foot Soldier held a bouquet of plastic flowers. Though artificial, they looked surprisingly lifelike — small, white, and carrying a clean, gentle fragrance.
“Where did you get these?” the Scientist asked.
“You put great care into this.”
The Scientist took the bouquet, looked at him thoughtfully, then walked past him and left the lounge.
At night, the Scientist conducted experiments in his lab. Beakers and containers of all sizes held colorful liquids, glowing softly in the quiet room.
He was about to leave when his gaze fell upon the plastic flowers the Foot Soldier had given him that morning. He picked them up and took them back to the zombie dormitory.
Meanwhile, the Foot Soldier lay in bed, his mind filled with nothing but the Scientist.
The way he focused on his work, the way he spoke and ate, his lowered eyelashes, his dark eyes, his slender fingers when he adjusted his glasses, and his usually thin, tightly pressed lips… and his brief praise that morning.
His face slowly flushed. He hugged his quilt, buried his face deep in the soft fabric, and drifted into sleep.
On the other side, the Scientist returned to his dorm and placed the plastic flowers gently by his pillow. He lay on his side, waiting for dawn.
The Foot Soldier jolted awake from his dream. His blue eyes were dazed, glistening like rippling water. His back was soaked with sweat, and faint warmth still lingered on his cheeks.
“I dreamed of him again…”
He touched the tears on his face, recalling the figure in his dream pressing him down. He could not see the face, but he could feel every touch.
Those hands wandered over his body. He wished the moment could last forever. Only then could he foolishly imagine that the one he loved loved him in return.
He wanted to remove his lover’s glasses gently, to kiss his cheek, to brush his hair softly, and whisper:
May your heart be like mine,
and I will never fail this love of ours.
“Heh… you’re giving him things again?”
In the cafeteria, freshly trained zombies swarmed to grab food.
The Foot Soldier and the Imp sat together at a table.
“Yes! And he accepted them!” the Foot Soldier said excitedly.
“…You forced them on him.”
The Imp swallowed a mouthful of synthetic brain.
“The second time! He took them himself this time!” the Foot Soldier insisted.
“Tch. How long have you been clinging to him? You’ve been obvious since you joined, and this is all you’ve got.”
“That’s called courting! You wouldn’t understand. I have my own pace.”
Afternoon, physical examination.
“Why another checkup?” the Imp muttered.
“To make sure certain zombies still have intelligence,” the Foot Soldier appeared behind him.
“Hah. You should get your own head examined.”
“It’s my turn. I’m going in.”
As the Imp’s voice faded away, the Foot Soldier waited outside idly. He peeked through the door and spotted silvery-white hair.
Scientist… it’s the Scientist.
Every cell in his body stirred. His heart seemed to beat only for him.
Why is the Scientist here? Conducting checkups for soldiers like us?
“Hey, Foot Soldier, it’s your turn!”
The Imp suddenly jumped beside him and tapped his helmet. The metal rang loudly, leaving the Foot Soldier dizzy and lightheaded.
He stumbled into the room in a daze.
When he came to his senses, the Scientist was right in front of him.
“Did your flowers have sleep-aiding effects?”
“They are quite a useful gift.”
During the routine examination, the Foot Soldier lost himself in thought again. All he could see was the Scientist.
The Foot Soldier followed the Scientist’s gaze downward. His face burned bright red instantly. He squeezed his legs together and stood up in panic, overwhelmed with shame in front of the one he loved.
He twisted the hem of his clothes, ready to dash out — as if leaving would erase everything that had happened.
“You may take a coat by the door if you need one.”
The Scientist’s voice came from behind. The Foot Soldier turned, saw the white lab coat, grabbed it, and rushed outside.
Once outside, the coat wrapped around him. He buried his burning face in the collar, but it brought no relief.
He could feel the creases — traces that the Scientist had worn it.
He breathed deeply, greedily taking in his scent.
“What are you standing here for?”
The Imp’s voice reached him. The Foot Soldier looked down at him.
The Imp stared at his expression and snorted.
“Tch. You got fucked by the Scientist, didn’t you? Pathetic.”
“No way… you really did?”
“No…” The Foot Soldier’s voice sank. He smiled bitterly.
“Why would he ever look at someone like me?”
“I’ll never understand you.” The Imp stared at him, then left.
The Foot Soldier returned to the dorm and took off the clean white lab coat.
He buried his face in it, his body trembling uncontrollably.
Today felt like a day tangled with both misfortune and luck. After what happened during the examination, how could he ever face the Scientist again?
Meanwhile, after finishing the examinations, the Scientist returned to his lab.
He thought of the Foot Soldier’s appearance earlier… and smiled unconsciously.
This smile was different from his usual ones — not cold, not mocking, not scornful.
It was a genuine smile, from the bottom of his heart.
The laughter echoed in the empty room. The Scientist froze, surprised by his own reaction.
Was he laughing at the Foot Soldier’s embarrassment?
The lab was in chaos. Shards of glass covered the floor, along with striking, bright blood.
The Scientist knelt among them, his hands and body cut by the glass. His neat silver hair was messy. His dark eyes were dense as ink, like a black hole that let in no light.
Sharp fragments reflected his face, casting harsh glints.
“I don’t love him. No… never.”
He held his head in his hands. Without gloves, he could feel the intense heat on his skin.
His reason told him that what he felt was impossible.
A mind all logic is like a knife all blade.
It makes the hand bleed that uses it.
“What’s wrong with that guy lately?”
“Such a coward. Wasted my money on bets.”
The zombies chatted, utterly bored. They lay sprawled in the lounge, where the table was covered with all kinds of snacks.
The Foot Soldier appeared. The room fell silent, then burst into noise again.
The Imp rushed forward and grabbed his wrist.
“Oh my god, you have no idea what they’ve been saying about you!”
The Imp’s eyes widened. “How could they say that?!”
“Look, that little runt—”
One zombie started to speak, but fell silent under the Imp’s fierce glare.
The Imp pulled the Foot Soldier to a corner.
“Are you really not going to chase him anymore?”
The Foot Soldier tried to speak, to say yes, but his throat was too hoarse.
“You still love him,” the Imp said quietly.
The Scientist had also been acting strangely.
He noticed that the Foot Soldier no longer clung to him.
He had planned to reluctantly agree if the Foot Soldier confessed again…
but the person he had grown to expect was no longer in his sight.
Why? Was it his pitifully low sense of self-worth?
The Scientist chuckled softly, picked up a folder, and walked out.
He was knocked over by someone hurrying down the hallway with his head lowered.
The folder flew away, papers scattering all over the floor.
“Ah, I’m sorry! Are you alright?”
The person held his head, blue eyes watery and clear as a spring.
The one who bumped into him must have spilled that spring water…
otherwise, why would his heart feel so gentle?
What was he so shocked about?
The Foot Soldier stared at him without speaking. He knelt down, carefully gathered the papers, placed them back into the folder, and gently handed it to the Scientist.
It reminded him of that lunch box. He had acted just the same back then…
The Foot Soldier left again.
The Scientist stood up. On the folder, he found a small note:
If you don’t mind, and if you have time,
please come to the park outside headquarters at six in the afternoon.
The Scientist hurried through his work all day and arrived at the park on time.
The research on plastic flowers had been a great success, and the colorful blooms made the place extraordinarily beautiful.
But he thought of the flower the Foot Soldier had given him — a chamomile.
The Foot Soldier was just like that flower: pure, innocent, and gentle.
The sun set like melted gold, evening clouds merging softly.
He turned and saw that the Foot Soldier had already arrived, gazing at the distant sunset. He spoke slowly:
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.
Yet passionate affection is only vexed by heartless indifference.
The Scientist listened as the Foot Soldier’s voice grew hoarse, as he began to sob quietly.
Regardless of everything, I just can't move on from you. I love you still.
The Foot Soldier heard the Scientist laugh. The laughter grew louder, then faded into the wind, yet settled deeply in both their hearts.
I love you against reason, against principle, against hope, against myself, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be.
The Foot Soldier froze. He stared with wide, tear-filled eyes.
He lifted his head gently and kissed the Scientist’s lips, light and careful as a dragonfly skimming water.
The kiss ended too soon. The Foot Soldier immediately turned to run.
But the Scientist grabbed his wrist, his grip firm and unyielding. He lowered his head, bit his soft lips, and slipped his tongue inside.
Time seemed to stop at this moment. Only soft, breathless sounds remained.
Their love — passionate or sorrowful, bright or broken —
was all hidden in that sunset.
