This is Alberto Angela (a very famous Italian paleontologist and scientific popularizer) in front of the newly restaurated, super marvellous painting entitled “Adonis wounded”, which is one of the most beautiful and interesting examples of ancient painting and is located in Pompeii. It occupies one of the outer garden walls of the namesake House of Adonis and is incorporated in the midst of paintings of a landscape nature.
The painting was badly damaged by the years that have gone by and by the weather. The passion of this man, of the site conservator Massimo Osanna and of a group of super skilled archaeologists helped to start its restauration. And now it’s here, in all its glory.
Growing up, Alberto was one of my main inspirations: solely because of him I became a historian. This explains why: a man with such sensibility and intelligence is a remarkable gift to us. And look at his beaming face: he’s utterly happy.
Grazie, Alberto.
