of course she knew. there was very little that alice didn't know about the world. in fact if there was a way to sometimes know less, she'd opt for it. to her core alice is someone who would love a surprise - and now in her eternal life she had been denied them. the level of patience she had to exert in daily life was a burden she would rather not carry. which meant that if someone in her sphere of influence ( like her dear brother edward ) was about to be surprised, it was her duty to preserve that.
“ if you keep frowning like that it's going to get stuck like that - edward think of the preservation of your youthful glow.” there is a charming smile as she continued. " i never stare giddily. " alice said with a small shake of her head. " although i was excited for you ! i know that finding a partner isn't high on you to-do list but we haven't even had any prospects since what - alaska ? being excited is not a crime you know. " edward did seem to be grumpier than usual. perhaps hungry. having skipped the school day to go hunting herself she realized how much worse that could have made the meeting.
" you're the most self-restrained person i've ever had the pleasure of knowing - i'm sure you were fine. " alice said gently. she leaned against the edge of the couch, chin resting gently on her hands. " you're not really mad are you ? just hungry ? "
she spoke of prospects as if edward had been the one looking. it was always alice trying to find him someone, as if he was the loneliest being in the entire world. at least she understood where her sister was coming from. that didn't mean it didn't irk him, at times. past almost relationships had ended quicker than they had began, edward never feeling right with those they came across naturally, nor those alice thought might be a good match. plus, alice knew what would happen even before it did, so as soon as edward picked up on any disappointment on her end, they knew when someone wasn't worth pursuing, anymore.
'it's never been a priority. for me. for you, on the other hand . . .' words came out sharp, on the surface, but underneath, she was right - he wasn't mad at her. annoyed, more than anything, and yes, so hungry. hungrier than he'd been in decades, if he remembered correctly. hungrier than any wildlife could satisfy. a sigh left her then, hand brushing through golden brown hair. 'i am hungry. imagine sitting next to someone who . . .' smelled better than anything you'd ever smelt before. better than basic blood, better than anything he'd eaten when he was still human. better than petrichor, better than sex. 'it was dangerous,' edward concluded, though his voice lost the irritated edge it had when he entered the room. 'please try not to play my love life - though lacking - like a game. i have no idea what i'm to do, now that she's in my class,' he couldn't go back; that, she was sure of.
'what is it now?' edward had felt as if they'd been interrupted all afternoon, the vampire just wanting to be left alone to his sheet music and the rain pouring down outside. the words came out quickly, almost a snap, though when he turned to see it was rosalie instead of emmett or alice, edward softened some. 'i'm sorry - our siblings seem to be quite demanding of me, today,' he played a few more keys on the piano before glancing back at rosalie. 'do you need something?' @vamp1rics / rosalie.

'you humor her too much,' edward said this as alice was just walking away, sister giving brother a snide little smile as edward shook their head. he looked back at his mother, and in spite of his words, his features softened up just so. 'you humor all of us too much. how do you put up with all of it?' his own smile was given in jest and gratitude. @m4triarch.
'i find it hard to believe that a journalist would find anything remotely interesting in forks, washington,' carlisle had told the entire family about the killings happening on the trails in the trees, though he wouldn't have had to - the tribe over in la push was growing angry enough that edward could smell them from across the town, and he knew they were starting to think the cullens had something to do with it. the cullens could say the same about them. something was killing people here. but it had been easy enough to cover it up as wild animal attacks, so her curiosity still stood . . . Everything was green: the trees, their trunks covered with moss, their branches hanging with a canopy of it, the ground covered with ferns. Even the air filtered down greenly through the leaves.

it was been nice to move again. alice loved the ritual of finding a new - or old - space and making it her own again. she enjoyed moving the furniture and repainting the walls. of staring at the contents of her room until they told her the way they'd like to be rearranged. having the space to reorganize your life also meant that you noticed more. things that didn't feel as true to you. alice found it a great time for reflection. to clear out the clutter of that old life to make way for the blessings of the new.
and she knew that, more than anyone, edward had blessings coming. she had seen it just as carlisle decided to move them again. and then when edward followed up with what she would be studying in school. today was supposed to be their meeting. alice hoped he would have been too preoccupied to really rumage around her thoughts. which is why she had been good and though of finishings, and bedspreads. of mundane things that could still leave the encounter up to fate.
the door creaks when it swings open. it was almost charming. the creaking make it feel more human, a little more lived in. while she doesn't have a memory of a former life it feels familiar to her. as if there is a screendoor on some back porch that creaked the same way. maybe it had been home, and now this was home. and one of her favorite people was walking through it. alice looked up from her magazine, pointer finger keeping her place as she lets it close. " soooo, " she begins, " how was class ? "

he was being haunted by the stench of a woman he’d just met. contrary to bella’s beliefs, the reason edward had been covering his nose when she sat down beside him was because he’d had an unmistakable and nearly impossible to control need to bite her. drink in her blood, which they could smell straight through her tanned skin - mixture of spices, cinnamon most prominent, an undertone of rosewater running through her veins, all wrapped into one. the rigidness of his back and the way she’d turned away from bella was enough to offend the woman, edward was sure, but they couldn’t help themself. imagine if he had let themself indulge too entirely into her natural perfume. they assumed the university wouldn’t take too kindly to a blood bath in the middle of one of their labs. as soon as she was able, she rushed from the school, ran as fast as he could to the woods, and found a deer to kill. it's blood was barely enough to satisfy in the first place, and so did little to keep her from thinking about sinking their teeth into bella’s warm neck, instead.
they couldn’t get home fast enough. though home felt like a loose term to edward. the cullens moved so often, he thought the definition of the word had been diluted. unlike her other siblings, he found the relocating to be exhausting. if nothing else, edward one day hoped to simply stay put, buy a secluded cabin, live out the rest of his days reading and eating wildlife. solitude had always been the goal, in his eyes. though leaving their family felt like a betrayal, which is why she hadn’t done so yet.
opening the door and seeing alice, edward squinted golden eyes. she hadn’t let anything slip, and that was unusual for someone so excites to share their visions. she’d been thinking about redecorating, making the place their own, and edward - with a realization that they might actually be less intelligent than they thought - should have known alice was hiding something from him. ‘i would tell you to take a guess, but i know i don’t need to,’ hanging his satchel in its usual place, edward stood in front of their sister, piercing and knowing gaze settled onto alice’s face. ‘you knew,’ edward stated this as a fact, irritation brewing just beneath her words. ‘a warning might have been nice. i did almost ruin our reputation today. did you happen to see my self restraint while you were staring giddily into my future?’

this had to be a prank. or maybe she had hit her head harder than she thought in the car crash. bella was still trying to make sense of how he got across that parking lot so quickly. or how he knew that she was there at all. normally after econ she would head to the station to each lunch her with dad. he had a busier case load than normal lately, so she had opted for a quick bite and coffee at the library. she wasn't supposed to be there at all. yet, they somehow kept showing up in the same places. washington was small, but it appeared they were nearly overlapping.
" i'm sorry - can you repeat that ? " head is tilted to the side and mouth is slightly open in a way that can only be described as befuddled. " you know what - this classroom is empty - maybe i didn't hear you clearly - " hand absently reaches to guide edward in as well, letting the noise of the busy corridor die down slightly. it was her first time back in the library, or back at school, since the incident. although edward had come to the hospital, their father had been the one to give the go ahead, so surely she wasn't checking up on bella.
hands dropped to her side, taking a half-step back looking up at the other. " you have my full attention now. it's just what i thought i heard before - " there's an apologetic smile on her features, " well, i must not have heard it right."

must he say it louder? it was bad enough he'd said it at all, worse still that they felt it. edward never should have stopped that car. humans rarely did anything kind for each other; certainly they didn't save each other's lives. and if she was being truthful with herself, it would have been easier on both of them if bella were dead. but edward's heart, the chilled one that was left in his chest . . . it had reached out to her before he did. it was obvious, from the way he couldn't read her mind, to the scent she gave off, and the way bella's face haunted them in their deepest daydreams. edward hadn't found any sort of love in more than a century, yet he found it here, with bella swan, in a low scale university in washington. had they stayed in their last home for just a little bit longer, like edward had wanted . . .
edward allowed himself to be pulled toward a quiet classroom, albeit reluctantly ( how desperately she wanted to pull away from the grip that set their hand on fire . . . ), flexing every finger when their hand is finally returned. taking a moment to let the dust settle, edward runs a tongue along his teeth, one nostril twitching at bella's smell, now that they were in such close quarters. he didn't want to repeat himself, but he would. he had to, for both their sakes. 'i said . . . that i don't think i can stay away from you, any longer,' edward, sliding his hands into his pockets, looked as if it pained him to repeat himself. 'you think i hate you, i'm aware. it's . . . the opposite. unfortunately,' the last word was unnecessary, but it slipped out involuntarily. 'and i'd like to answer the questions you just keep asking, so . . . i want to take you somewhere,' she paused. 'do you trust me?'
