So… I got a notification from the State Department at like 8 PM Pacific that my passport was approved, and I was quietly thankful and stunned bc my legal gender in Oregon is listed as X, or undeclared, and that's what's on my passport. I'm pretty sure someone(s) worked late to get the X passports done today.

I was already really grateful to whoever in the Seattle Passport Office worked late to get these things processed on the last Friday before That Man gets back into office... and then I got a notification that my passport shipped at fucking midnight Pacific and whoever got that shit out the door so it couldn't be picked up on Monday and like, denied and shredded?

They're my fucking hero.

another person has self-immolated in protest of the ongoing genocide happening in Palestine. his name is Matt Nelson, he self-immolated in front of the Israeli consulate in Boston, he is the 5th known person to have done this. Before he did this, he stated his intentions and reasoning in a Youtube video which has been reposted across several platforms and the condensed transcription is as following:

"this website uses cookies" fucking why. i wish we hadn't named it that, so cheap and unthreatening. a cookie can be anything from a single data point to actively tracking your usage throughout websites. and if you try to research it, you overwhelmingly get (ad-placed) cheery and chipper responses that "cookies are useful data tools that help websites to help you!"

one article suggests cookies allow for "more personalized websites." i do not want them to know how to personalize their website for me. what they really mean is "make this website better for advertisers." they are not going to turn the website a nice shade of my favorite color. they are going to put ads up they think i like. so it's not for me.

okay sure. it makes shopping easier! okay, great. spend money more! happy advertiser. but then why the fuck when you google how long cooked chicken good for are they skimming your data. why when you google can my dog eat tomatoes are they skimming your data. why does mixing bleach and vinegar bad? require someone skimming your data.

so now you slog through AI responses because sometimes the AI tells you no worries! cooked chicken can never go bad and all dogs go to heaven. something about this feels like being 13 before google was really-a-thing when you had to be kind of clever about how you used Ask Jeeves. what is even the point anymore. half of these sites are not written with human hands anymore. we are creating an infinite digital graveyard in order to give advertisers more space, more billboards.

you have to find the first reputable-looking site in a list of GORP.COM/HEALTH. and when you click the first thing it says is can i skim your data? and meanwhile yes bleach and vinegar bad, you've made chlorine gas.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly's announcement Tuesday that Canada has suspended 30 permits to export military materiel to Israel may have been meant to placate pro-Palestinian activists demanding an arms embargo. But without more transparency, it remains a political muddle.

One week out from a byelection in a previously safe Liberal seat in Montreal where New Democrats (and their pamphlets) are pushing Canada's response to the ongoing violence in Gaza as a ballot question, Joly proactively used her scrum at the governing caucus's retreat in Nanaimo, B.C. to rebut claims the Trudeau government isn't doing enough.

"Our policy has been clear," she said. "Since Jan. 8, we have not accepted any form of arms export permits to be sent to Israel."

Accepting her claim that the government's policy has been "clear" means forgetting the mess last spring when a New Democrat MP introduced a Commons motion calling on Canada to "suspend all trade in military goods and technology with Israel" that had to be watered down at the last minute so more Liberals could support it.

Activists point to the many millions of dollars in defence trade that may continue to flow Israel's way under previously approved and still-valid permits.

Joly told reporters she asked her department to look into Canadian companies' existing permits.

"We are asking questions to these companies. Following that, I asked my department to look into any existing permits of arms or parts of arms that could have been sent to Israel," the minister said.

"Following that, I suspended this summer around 30 existing permits of Canadian companies and we are asking questions to these companies."

She did not say what her questions were.

A suspension is not a cancellation. Last spring, Joly was among those warning that sudden, arbitrary or politically motivated terminations invite legal action by firms that hold the government responsible for their business losses. Supply chain disruptions also cause problems for Canada's defence procurement relationships with allies.

There may be over 200 valid permits to ship to Israel right now, so 30 suspensions falls well short of the total arms embargo activist organizations — not to mention 22 Liberal MPs — have demanded.
