A guilty conscience breeds disease. Upholding the brunt of the divisive endeavors of the Cold War, the young man grapples with his crumbling mind and the sanity that fails him.

OOC// Kilroy's past is something that seems to enamor folks. So, I thought I'd let them deal with the man himself!

Enjoy this little dabble in the past... Oh, and do be careful. His temperament is testy.

Threads can be from his time in college, his nuclear bomb development job in Vegas, or his time as a mobster in Vegas. (Those last two overlap.) We’ll jump around!

*summer was hot and Hermes had been keeping a low profile that always meant he hadn’t visited Kilroy in about two weeks. He was working in a junk yard getting copper from wires and moving cars where ever the boss man wanted them. He didn’t use anything to pull them other than himself. He never really knew how he got so strong though he did blame the lab* “…hot day.” *he sighed not tried but more trying to think then he saw something that made him stop and gently place down the car. He moved picking up an old coin* “hm…” *There was a reason to visit his friend*

*Of course, the seemingly hottest day of the year, Kilroy had classes. He was walking back from a lecture, pulling at his collar to try and get some relief. He wore his usual three-piece suit. He never even fathomed wearing something else.*

*He felt like he nearly collapsed in his dorm room, trying to cool off.*

*He had finished with the car and getting his pay out for the metal and scrap copper. Which was about fifty bucks maybe he’d get a bit more if he were an adult or he actually wanted to fight the price. He rushed to the dorms he hoped Kilroy was in he moved to the elevator with the coin in his hand*

*The lobby of the dorm hall seemed hotter than outside. A guy waited in the elevator with Hermes, wearing a tank top he was actively sweating through.*

“Hey, man.”

“…sup!” *he made sure his hoodie was over him* “hot day yeah?” *He joked*

“Fuckin’ Scortchin. You not hot, wearing all that?”

*He pressed the button for Kilroy’s same floor.*

“Eh nah I’m used to New Orleans heat…this this ain’t nothing.” *He had a brief memory of the heat in New Orleans but he wanted to seem normal like one of the students here*

“Wow, really?! I’ve never left Gotham. You like it down there? I’m John by the way.”

*He pushed his hand towards him to shake.*

*He shook his hand before a look of confusion ran over his face leaving his lips a frown* “Hm it’s a nice place New Orleans. Nice girls too…”

*He whistled, seemingly too distracted by the girls to think about the fact that Hermes didn't give his name.*

"Now, that's what I like to hear!"

*The elevator dinged on their shared floor destination, and he waited to walk out together with him.*

*He walked and flipped the coin in his hand* “ha yeah. I haven’t been in Gotham very long good girls here?” *He wanted to be on okay terms as they walked the hall at least*

"They're smokin'! Like partying, and living on the edge."

*He gave another whistle at some thought.*

"There's this one girl driving everybody up the wall lately. She's a biology major. Super foxy mama."

*He watched him flip it.*

"Hey, whatcha got there?"

“Old coin for a friend.” *He flipped it higher as he thought of the hippie girl and looked to his wrist he had kept the bracelet mainly because it could be used to start a fire if push came to shove*

"Oh yeah? That's dynamite."

*John didn't seem actually excited about the historical value of the coin. Rather, the 'coolness' of anything a guy could carry, akin to a smooth river stone or a big stick. Childish pleasures of pride.*

"Ah, you go to the rallies too? I think we're really getting somewhere."

*He noticed the bracelet, from where Hermes' eyes fell. He assumed he'd just picked it up at a peace protest on campus. As the two of them neared Kilroy's dorm room, John seemed to slow down too, as though going to the same place.*

“Ah kinda…you know the soldiers don’t have a choice to who they kill. the workers too.” *He moved to Kilroys door and knocked quietly* “Just if you want peace you’ll need to want it for everyone even the bombers.”

*John tilted his head, somewhat confused to Hermes' words. He wasn't a very bright person, and he didn't catch onto his message quickly enough before he was distracted.*

"You seeing Kilroy?! Wow! I didn't know he had friends! Other than me, of course."

*He stepped in front of Hermes and gave a loud pattern of knocking.*

"Hey, hey, hey, neighbor-ino!"

*There were some rustling sounds and Kilroy clearing his throat.*

"H-Hey, John. John. John. Please go away."

*John seemed to wave away the sincere request as playful banter. He put his key into the door right beside Kilroy's.*

"Oh, you meant Kilroy? That's just rumors. People just like to joke about the cave-dweller. See you at the next rally, I guess!"

*The neighbor waved to Hermes, moving to leave to his own dorm room.*

“Yeah sure.” *He turned to kilroy* “sorry for him we were going to the same place. But I brought you something for the trouble.” *He showed the old coin it looked golden even under dirt*

*It took a bit for Kilroy to get to the handle and open the door, first only a crack to peek out. He had a tissue over his mouth and nose. As soon as he saw who it was, his posture changed completely, to that bubbly guy Hermes knew by now.*

"F-For m-me? W-Wow. Y-You... w-want to come in?"

*This certainly turned his hot and humid day around. He always looked forward to Hermes' unexpected visits.*

“Sure.” *He smiled and as he stepped in he took off his hood* “Yeah I found it when I was moving cars thought you would like it.”

*He opened and closed the door eight times before joining Hermes deeper into the room to look at the coin.*

"I l-love it! Thank you, Hermes! You were outside in this heat?"

*While he talked, he tapped at the coin. He frowned at the idea that Hermes could have been hurt.*

“Of course. Uh yeah I was scarping wired and helping move cars.” *He let him tap the car* “I got fifty for it so it’s a win.”

*He couldn't deny that it sounded like a fun time, but he was sure that was just his idea of fun, and probably not Hermes, considering it was his job.*

"Y-You should s-sit down. I h-have s-some water. Water. Water. I-Is fifty dollars g-good pay?"

*He wasn't really familiar with what a regular job was like... not that Hermes' jobs were standard. He wanted to move to settle Hermes into a seat, but he didn't feel ready to stop tapping yet.*

*Hermes realizing Kilroy would keep tapping he took his hand and moved them so they could sit down together* “it’s good pay for me. I think I’ll get a tent and some food when we finish up.” *Of course he would not be mad if Kilroy took up his whole day*

*He followed him like a duckling, completely obedient to the hand-hold. Kilroy felt so easily safe with Hermes. He didn't mind so much being touched by him. And, it was a relief to have someone stop the counting for him. That felt easier to move past, than having to decide when to stop tapping himself. He gave a relieved exhale and walked to sit at the edge of his bed. There were a few water bottles on his nightstand Hermes could pick from.*

"O-Oh. I'm glad you can get the basics with that. I h-hope it doesn't get too c-cold at night... or hot... in there. A-Are you sure that's ok? I-I m-mean..."

*He trailed off. He knew Hermes didn't really have a choice, and he couldn't pretend to know what it was like to be homeless.*

*He lays back picking up a water bottle and taking a few sips* “eh I don’t mind if it’s old I huddle up and if it’s hot I can always take off my clothes.” *He shrugs*

*His eyes darted around Hermes as he watched him drink, quietly absorbing his answer to his question. It was kind of Hermes to resolve his curiosity. The boy always seemed so calm. It was hard for Kilroy to not feel the same, in his presence.*

"You're like a soldier. You don't mind the conditions... D-Did you swallow three times or two?"

*He wanted an even number for that.*

“Uh here I’ll just re-drink what ya need from it?” *he put the drink down though he was thirsty* “a soldier? You think I’m a soldier?”

"F-Four would be nice. Four sips... B-But eight is sometimes better."

*He squinted in a grimace.*

"...O-Or sixty-four, if it feels d-dirty."

*His counting compulsions were starting to rise in quantity overtime.*

"Y-Yeah. Y-You're b-brave like one. And clever, and k-know how to fight."

*He peeped.*

“I think I can do four.” *He took four sips with a sigh when he was done* “you’re clever man. I only know how to fight because people suck.”

*He took a deep breath and straightened his own tie. He nodded.*

"Y-Yeah, that w-works."

*He calmed after Hermes took those sips. He gave a timid smile.*

"I-I'm not that s-smart... You actually solve problems. Y-You know how to talk to people. You understand them better than I do. I wish I could fight..."

*He gave a small frown, thinking that nobody would have a reason to hurt or annoy Hermes.*

“Maybe but I just tell people what they want to hear. I mean I hide my face all the time because I know seeing a face full of eyes is crazy for most people.”

*He paused, wondering if Hermes was just telling him what he wanted to hear, too… He liked having a friend. It felt like Hermes did too. He didn’t want to believe that was a lie.*

“…W-Well, it’s still a skill. I’m sorry people look at you differently. You shouldn’t have to burn up in the heat because of that.”

“You don’t. I mean that all I really need.” *He fishies off the bottle crushing it as he drank* “ah jeez thanks for the water man.”

*That made him blush, and lower his head into his shoulders sheepishly to smile. Hermes definitely was his friend.*

"Of course. I think you really needed it. It's awful out there. I thought I was going to pass out. T-Thank you for coming to s-see me. A-And for this wonderful coin."

*He looked back over at the gift in Hermes' hand.*

“I’d hate for you to pass out man and of course anytime.” *He moved and offered up the coin*

*He took it eagerly, looking it over and scrubbing at the dirt to try and get a feel for the age and make of it.*

"A-Ah, thank you. Yes, I... felt like the sun was beating at me the whole way home. Though, it couldn't have been more than a few minutes. Half an hour, maybe. I-I'm glad my r-room gets cold. I d-don't want to go outside for a long time."

*He huffed, dedicating to himself that he would not leave until he absolutely had to.*

“Oh yeah? Jeez the sun was a big aggressive for today even with how the weather’s been.”

*He nodded somberly.*

"I wish it would rain sometime, soon. Wouldn't that be nice?"

“Hm yeah.” *He closed some of his eyes the room was cold enough and the bed felt nice even with the wrappers on it*

*He smiled, happy to see that Hermes liked the rain too. He remembered their brief adventure in the rain. Hermes had been asleep on a bench. Hm... Maybe he could buy him a new umbrella.*

"What do you like to do when the weather is nice enough t-to go out?"

“Besides working? I like to sleep or watch cats…help spiders you know a lot of people like to rip off their poor legs.”

*He brightened at the mention of cats. Gosh! He loved cats.*

"S-Spiders? Ah... That does s-sound unnecessary."

*He could understand panicking if they invaded a person's home, but he didn't enjoy the idea of seeking them out to cripple or kill.*

"They do feel pain, right?"

“They can yes…makes me sad to see it. Any bug really you know?” *He sat up with a stretch*

"A-Any bug? Gosh, I... don't really think about bugs, much. I don't like when they invade my workspace."

*He watched him extend. He could bet he was tired. He tried to look more relaxed himself, hoping that could encourage Hermes to take it easy.*

“I know you don’t like em I’m sorry is me talking about them giving you the willy’s?” *His accent had more of a southern draw and he laid back down*

*He blinked rapidly, not expecting the accent at the moment. He recalled Hermes saying where he was from, but it was always still so surprising to hear an accent which Kilroy had never heard before.*

“A-Ah… Y-Yes, somewhat. It’s alright, though. You don’t need to worry.”

*He timidly laid himself down, beside Hermes.*

*a blue eye opened to look at him* “hm good. You were out today?” *He wondered what Kilroy would be doing maybe classes? He could be for sure*

*He sighed. He hated to admit that he was frustrated with the lectures. He was behind on work, and it felt impossible to catch up, but Hermes didn’t need to know that.*

“Yeah, I had to walk back from ten minutes out. I wish I could do my classes from my room. That’d be so much easier.”

*He sighed, taking an exhausted deep breath, and closed his eyes, to try and enjoy the leisure of the bed, his friend, and air conditioning.*

“Yeah…you know I have a great memory one day I could probably sneak in there and just come back and tell you what happened.”

“No. Look man I can be pretty invisible when I want to be.” *He jumped up and put his hood up and his hands in his pockets* “See? And when I think really hard about it.” *There was about three seconds before Kilroy couldn’t see Hermes at all*

He was working in a junk yard getting copper from wires and moving cars where ever the boss man wanted them. He didn’t use anything to pull them other than himself. He never really knew how he got so strong though he did blame the lab* “…hot day.” *he sighed not tried but more trying to think then he saw something that made him stop and gently place down the car. He moved picking up an old coin* “hm…” *There was a reason to visit his friend*

*It took a bit for Kilroy to get to the handle and open the door, first only a crack to peek out. He had a tissue over his mouth and nose. As soon as he saw who it was, his posture changed completely, to that bubbly guy Hermes knew by now.*

"F-For m-me? W-Wow. Y-You... w-want to come in?"

*This certainly turned his hot and humid day around. He always looked forward to Hermes' unexpected visits.*

“Sure.” *He smiled and as he stepped in he took off his hood* “Yeah I found it when I was moving cars thought you would like it.”

*He opened and closed the door eight times before joining Hermes deeper into the room to look at the coin.*

"I l-love it! Thank you, Hermes! You were outside in this heat?"

*While he talked, he tapped at the coin. He frowned at the idea that Hermes could have been hurt.*

“Of course. Uh yeah I was scarping wired and helping move cars.” *He let him tap the car* “I got fifty for it so it’s a win.”

*He couldn't deny that it sounded like a fun time, but he was sure that was just his idea of fun, and probably not Hermes, considering it was his job.*

"Y-You should s-sit down. I h-have s-some water. Water. Water. I-Is fifty dollars g-good pay?"

*He wasn't really familiar with what a regular job was like... not that Hermes' jobs were standard. He wanted to move to settle Hermes into a seat, but he didn't feel ready to stop tapping yet.*

And, it was a relief to have someone stop the counting for him. That felt easier to move past, than having to decide when to stop tapping himself. He gave a relieved exhale and walked to sit at the edge of his bed. There were a few water bottles on his nightstand Hermes could pick from.*

"O-Oh. I'm glad you can get the basics with that. I h-hope it doesn't get too c-cold at night... or hot... in there. A-Are you sure that's ok? I-I m-mean..."

*He trailed off. He knew Hermes didn't really have a choice, and he couldn't pretend to know what it was like to be homeless.*

*His eyes darted around Hermes as he watched him drink, quietly absorbing his answer to his question. It was kind of Hermes to resolve his curiosity. The boy always seemed so calm. It was hard for Kilroy to not feel the same, in his presence.*

"You're like a soldier. You don't mind the conditions... D-Did you swallow three times or two?"

*He wanted an even number for that.*

*summer was hot and Hermes had been keeping a low profile that always meant he hadn’t visited Kilroy in about two weeks. He was working in a junk yard getting copper from wires and moving cars where ever the boss man wanted them. He didn’t use anything to pull them other than himself. He never really knew how he got so strong though he did blame the lab* “…hot day.” *he sighed not tried but more trying to think then he saw something that made him stop and gently place down the car. He moved picking up an old coin* “hm…” *There was a reason to visit his friend*

*Of course, the seemingly hottest day of the year, Kilroy had classes. He was walking back from a lecture, pulling at his collar to try and get some relief. He wore his usual three-piece suit. He never even fathomed wearing something else.*

"There's this one girl driving everybody up the wall lately. She's a biology major. Super foxy mama."

*He noticed the bracelet, from where Hermes' eyes fell. He assumed he'd just picked it up at a peace protest on campus. As the two of them neared Kilroy's dorm room, John seemed to slow down too, as though going to the same place.*
