13 (Good) Reasons Why Taylor Should Come To ITALY

Dear @taylorswift, after your last time you had a concert here in Italy (March 2011, Speak Now Tour) I realised you took your getaway car and that was the last time we’ve ever saw you. (exept for that little trip in Rome I hope you enjoyed). So I though I might as well give you some really good reasons why you should come back (…be here),

1) “Rep Tour” has 7 letters. “Italia” has 6 letters. So, according to my math: Rep Tour + Italia = Rep Tour Italia and guess what? That’s 13 letters! CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT BUT THIS AIN’T A COINCIDENCE, IT’S CLEARLY A SIGN!

2) Food: Italy has certainly the best food and the best chefs. There are so many yummy things you’d love. Some examples? Pizza (THE REAL ITALIAN PIZZA THOUGH), Lasagne, Spaghetti, Polenta, Cannoli, Carbonara, Piadina Romagnola, Giuanduiotti and I could go on. Can you smell it? Well, just come to Italy and you’ll taste it as well! (and you’ll love it, I promise)

3) Wine: I noticed that you’re becoming a such a big wine stan. Well, guess who’s one of the largest (and best) wine producers? THAT’S RIGHT Y’ALL, ITALY! Also, we have some really good champagnes, we could set up a champagne sea here if you’d like,

4) We never go out of Style: Italians are always very stylish, and I noticed you like our style as well since you used some cool outfits from Italian Fashion Brands in your music video “Look What You Made Me Do” like the Gucci jumper and the Bulgari jewels from the “Serpenti” collection. That’s another good reason to pay us a visit. Milan is the fashion capital after all, you wouldn’t want to miss everything this beautiful city has to offer, would you? (and you wouldn’t want to miss the chance to go shopping with your italian Swifties right? I promise we give some good adviced when it comes to fashion)

5) Red: Your latest album is now Reputation, which means that your third to last album is Red. GUESS WHAT’S THE THIRD COLOUR OF THE ITALIAN FLAG? YES, IT’S RED! (okay, okay… it’s not valid reason, but still: please come to Italy)

6) Boots: you fell in love with knee boots, didn’t you? You used them in your music video “Look What You Made Me Do” and in like… every Secret Session? We can’t blame you though, they are so cool and they suit you a lot. This is another reason why you should love Italy. Why? GUESS WHO’S SHAPED LIKE A BOOT?!

7) People: Italian people are so nice and welcoming and the Swifties Italian fandom is full of lovely and funny people. They always make you feel at home, welcomed and loved. I’ve always felt like I’m part of a big family. And I’m sure you’d feel the same.

8) Landscapes and Art: Italy has so many beautiful landscapes and it’s full of art. You could take so many beuatiful pics with your polaroid!

9) PLEASE COME TO ITALY, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE P L E A S E, I’m begging you on my knees to come.

10) Sales: WE MADE IT TO #1 ON ITUNES EVEN THOUGH A VERY FAMOUS AND LOVED ITALIAN SINGER RELEASED HER ALBUM ON THE SAME DAY. Italian Swifties power! We also made everything in our power to promote Reputation and we did a pretty good job. I hope you’re proud of us!

11) Language: hey you wouldn’t want to miss the chance to learn some Italian right? I mean, Italian is such a beautiful language and it’s also a really hot one. Not only you’ll learn the spoken language BUT also the italian signs. You know, when we talk we also gesticulate a LOT lmao. This is a unique chance btw. Below, you’ll find your first lesson on how to speak Italian. Come to Italy for part 2!

12) Islands: THERE ARE SO MANY BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS IN ITALY such as Capri, Ischia, Lampedusa, Isola D’Elba, Stromboli and so on. Wanna move to an Island? Choose an Italian Island! They’re the best and I’m not saying it just because I’m Italian lmao.

13) I think this is the most important reason: because we love you and we really miss you a lot. Last time you’ve been here was in March 2011, it was a long time ago and we really do miss you. Some of us have been fans for such a long time but they’ve never had the chance to see you live, either because they became fans after that concert or because they were too little to attend that one. We always love and support you and seeing you in front of us and not on a computer screen… well.. it’d be the best thing it could happen to us. Please, make our dream come true.

I don’t think those are the right messages to feed girls, and I think they are given those messages by the popular cliques in their school, which is all kind of cascading down from the media and what we seem to prioritize in women. My life doesn’t gravitate towards being edgy, sexy or cool. I’m imaginative, I’m smart and I’m hardworking. (x)

The New Yorker’s review of Adams’s 1989 (it’s worth noting that the magazine did not review Taylor Swift’s album at all), is headlined “Haters Gonna Hate”. Like Guilt by Association, the joke dismisses the pop artists at the music’s core: “You’re going to hate this, but we actually reviewed an album written by Taylor Swift”. In it, Ian Crouch writes that Adams’s cover is “subversive” and “more sincere than the original”: “‘Blank Space’, Swift’s posh, sexy provocation about the thrills of being a wild woman, becomes, in Adams’s hands, a hushed, whispery lamentation of troubled love. In that song, Swift’s ‘long list of ex-lovers’ is a boast about the hearts she’s broken; the same line, sung by Adams, is a warning about his emotional baggage, the heartbreaks he’s suffered.” Crouch’s criticism is undeniably gendered. Swift is hypersexual and uncomplicated: something to be looked at, rather than seriously listened to. Indeed, for Crouch, Adams’s achievement is that he didn’t sympathetically engage with Swift’s lyrics at all, but simply appropriated her words by applying them to his own, more complex, man emotions. “Something in his state of mind and musical sensibility listened to the romantic exuberance of a young woman’s pop album and heard his own melancholy. He responded with music that is both personal and generous.” When Crouch celebrates Adams’s generosity and candidness, he does so because he sees these qualities that Swift’s original lacks. Where Swift is “goofy”, “wistful” or even “banal”, Adams is “urgent, confessional, lonely”. Of course, these are the qualities that Adams, a genuine fan of Swift, so admires in the original songs. “They’re constructed from such an honest place,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “They’re all completely giving.” In the same interview, he also said that he sees Swift and himself as singing about the same things: “The world of romance and the confusion of being alive and knowing how you fit in – all that stuff is there. It’s what we write about.” This is hardly surprising: Adams and Swift are both singer-songwriters rooted in country music, who slowly but surely started pushing at the edges of their genre. The only difference is that while Adams danced around the mainstream, Swift was catapulted towards it. A whole range of publications make a similar claim that Adams’s masculine, alternative cover lifts Swift’s original to higher plains. Even reviews that laud Swift’s original achievement applaud Adams for making us realise its strength, as though Swift’s album alone could never convince us. The Atlantic wrote that Adams “vindicated” Swift; the Telegraph that he exposes “emotion beating beneath [her] gleaming surfaces”; the A.V. Club that he provided “a stark reminder that Swift’s songwriting continues to deserve respect and kudos”. (Seemingly, only Pretty Much Amazing thought to invert this patriarchal logic with their piece, “Taylor Swift Writes Ryan Adams’ Best Album”.) It’s a response that will be eerily familiar to women across the globe who have sat in a meeting and watched as their ideas have been shot down, only to be taken seriously when co-opted by a male colleague. Who have listened to male friends repeat their own jokes back to them, as though they had hit on something funny utterly by accident. Even with the intention of celebrating her, Ryan Adams has made it possible for dozens of music journalists to mansplain Swift’s own album to her.

Hi taylorswift My name is Andrea and I come from Italy. You know, I haven’t done this tattoos just because I’m a fan of yours. I did them because these words actually mean something for me. I discovered I was gay in middle school and I didn’t want to admit it to myself and to other people, I was afraid. People joked on me, they laughed at me, they called me “faggot” and they made me feel so small. Then your “Fearless” album came out and I was listening to your song and I realized that the meaning of that song could be interpreted in a different way and in my case I didn’t have to be afraid of the person I was, of being myself: different but equal to others. In that moment I realized that I wanted to make a “Fearless” tattoo on my wrist. I wanted to remember to be fearless and I wanted to remember that also thanks to you I learned to accept myself. “Nothing safe is worth the drive” came after. I was going through a heartbreak. I fell in love with a boy that lived 500 miles away from me. I took the train, I went to him because I liked him and guess what? He refused me. I was so sad, but I listened to “Treacherous” and then I realized that maybe it didn’t go as I thought, but during that journey I felt wonderful emotions and sensations that will always be a part of me. I realized that risking is worth because risking hurts but helps us growing up. So I decided to get a tattoo of those words because they lifted me up. I just wanted to thank you for everything, now I can smile. I love u so much!
