“But Driver also explains that Han and Leia’s marital problems may have helped make Kylo an easier target – confirming that the couple split long before Kylo turned to the dark side, rather than as a consequence of this. Essentially, despite being drawn to each other – and despite being every much in love – Han and Leia were just too different to be compatible. Caught in the middle of their conflict, their son had no one to turn to, and was left feeling alone, abandoned and misunderstood.” (x)
I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO FURIOUS IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.
If you think I’m going to dismiss this as utter bullshit and completely disregard it (in addition to like half the events of TFA), then you are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.
I am literally disgusted if is now the official canon. What a massive fuck you to Han and Leia, to their story, to the original trilogy, and to Star Wars fans.
THIS IS EXACTLY THE SHIT IM TALKING ABOUT WHEN I SAY THEY DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT THE OT CHARACTERS. THEYRE REGRESSING THEIR FUCKING CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT TO FURTHER THAT OF AN EMO PISS BABY BARELY ANYONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT. FUCK OFF YOU DONT NEED TO SACRIFICE THE OT TO MAKE INTERESTING NEW PLOTS AND CHARACTERS
FUCK DISNEY I AM SO ANGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The entire plot of TFA was already one that rendered Han and Leia’s character arcs in the OT (and Luke’s, too) completely void. Literally every. single. thing. that the OT characters fought for was taken from them. Literally EVERY SINGLE PROGRESSION of their characters has been destroyed. I’ve already made a post about this, but I’M DOING ANOTHER ONE because that’s how upset I am.
First of all, clearly all three of these characters are fighting to destroy the empire, establish the New Republic, and restore peace and justice to the galaxy. Except, in TFA, the remnants of the Empire have manifested as the First Order, the capitol of the New Republic is destroyed, and the galaxy is once again subjected to the evil of a tyrannical regime. Back to square one.
Luke’s struggle and eventual victory in saving his father from the Dark Side is rendered moot when he fails to save Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. In other words, his victory in the OT in this regards is balanced out by his failure in the new canon; he saved his father but failed to save his nephew. The triumph of the Light Side in Anakin Skywalker’s redemption is void now that a new evil Skywalker is here to mess everything up anyways. BACK TO SQUARE ONE. He worked to rebuild the Jedi order but it was destroyed and now there still aren’t any Jedi. BACK TO SQUARE ONE. Oh yeah and also years of exile :)
Han starts off as a jaded smuggler living an empty life and eventually progresses into a brave, selfless general who puts the needs of others before himself. In TFA, he’s still selfless and brave, except it doesn’t matter because he’s back to square one living that empty life as a smuggler again, except even worse because he’s experienced LOSS now: lost his family, his ship, and eventually, his life. BACK TO SQUARE ONE EXCEPT WAIT HE’S DEAD.
In addition to having dedicated herself to the Rebellion only to see the fruits of that labor destroyed, Leia’s character has to cope with the knowledge that Darth Vader–the man who tortured her and Han and tore their lives apart and cut off Luke’s hand–is her father. Instead of letting her overcome this horror, it cruelly and callously haunts her for the rest of her life, corrupting her son (“there’s too much Vader in him”) and decimating her family. Leia arguably suffers the worst loss in the original trilogy in losing her entire planet. Now, after that suffering and everything she went through to be with Han, she also loses her son and her husband, lost her brother for years and was all alone fighting THE SAME GODDAMN WAR AS BEFORE, oh and also apparently the New Republic wouldn’t even listen to her about the First Order? So add that slap in the face. Leia has NOTHING. Hmmmm, suffering a huge loss and then burying herself in her role in the Resistance because she has nothing else? Sound familiar? Oh, yeah. BACK TO SQUARE ONE.
Han and Leia may bicker a lot initially, but it’s pretty clear that the bickering was an attempt to cover up their feelings for one another as well as avoid admitting those feelings to themselves. Han and Leia overcome numerous, seemingly insurmountable hardships–including putting their own personal safety at risk for the other multiple times–in order to be together, and their love endures and is thriving at the pinnacle moment when the Empire suffers its greatest and ultimate defeat. Their struggle to be together is destroyed A HUNDRED TIMES OVER, because not only are they NOT TOGETHER and OH HAN DIES, but now you’re trying to tell me that their love was bullshit from the start because they were “too incompatible.” So basically their entire love story was for nothing? Because all they got out of it was a broken marriage and a lost child and estrangement and death?
What the actual hell? What was the point then? I understand that now there are these new characters that are the new “hope” for the galaxy, but Han, Leia, and Luke were the central characters of Star Wars for DECADES. They were the hope. They were our hope. The story was about THEM, and about the ultimate triumph of good over evil, of light over darkness. Now all three of their characters have been debased.
Han and Leia especially–what they went through individually and together–have been degraded. You can’t allow fans to believe that they had a happy ending for thirty years and then decide that every single thing those characters went through was only ultimately to end in more suffering. What a great concept to present to fans of Star Wars and to the fans of Han and Leia, arguably among the most well-known and most well-loved characters of all time.
It doesn’t affect the way I see Han and Leia and it never will.
"Han and Leia were just too different to be compatible."
F**K YOU, DISNEY!!! I can't believe i'm saying this but, i want George back! At least he will not ruin the original characters!
