In the end where Cas was gone and Dean felt alone. He did everything he could to stay alive and be happy but he was done. When he was impalled he saw this as an end and an opportunity to go to heaven. He didn’t know about the changes made to heaven so he thought that he would be able to relive his best memories. Most of them were with Cas.
