Griner’s release marks a stunning turn of events from last month, when she began serving a nine-year sentence at a Russian penal colony more than 200 miles east of Moscow.
During her trial in July, Griner pleaded guilty but said she had no criminal intent. Griner said the canisters, which she had been prescribed to treat chronic pain, were packed inadvertently as she hurriedly prepared for her flight.
As her trial neared its end in early August, it became public that the U.S. put a prisoner swap offer on the table for Moscow to consider. Russia called for “quiet diplomacy” but said after her sentencing that it was ready to discuss a deal.
The U.S. traded the Russian arms dealer, who has served 11 of his 25 year sentence. I do understand that this is potentially dangerous, especially as Russia is actively invading and terrorizing another country. But Brittney was being wrongfully detained and was excessively charged. There's no way in hell she deserved to waste away and die in a penal colony for a few measly canisters of something that was prescribed to her, that she needed for chronic pain. Even if it's illegal in Russia, the sentence was excessive when it was clear there was no criminal intent of drug trafficking.
So, you can keep your insensitive takes about her having gotten what she deserved to yourself. She hadn't, not at all.
Reminder that there's currently an American teacher also being detained for Marijuana possession and he also had a prescription to treat a medical condition. I believe he's been there for a few years. So, as frustrated as we were with this country's response to Brittney, she was still a high profile detainee. I just wanna spare a thought for that teacher and his family seeing this happen for Brittney, after seeing it happen for another American detainee last year as well...
