there’s some vicious lance of delight at doing something harrow hadn’t accounted for, embarrassingly similar to the childlike glee of managing to win. she always dug her grubby little nails into those infrequent times she’d pull one over on harrow, and when the fallout was unpleasant, it was still nice to know she’d pissed her off.

now, there will be no fallout. it is only gideon, the envy of all cadavers, in all her vampirish glory that she hadn’t even asked for. and harrow isn’t holding the leash anymore.  

she touches a hand of waxen skin to her chest in feigned shock, tilting her head toward harrow so the wound in her throat yawns.

“ oh, my most macabre, the bleakest remnants of my heart. I thought you knew me better. nah, I get a little squeamish about the whole drinking blood thing. I’m not into it. ” she lifts her broad shoulders in a shrug. “ look at it this way: if it kills me, it won’t set you back any since I’m not supposed to be here at all, yeah? ”

it was within her grasp. she could feel the beating heart of her life rousing in the palm of her hand as she watched the ninth shrink through the window of the escape pod. it should have worked— she had always believed, for no apparent reason she can define in hindsight, that if she made it off the planet, she’d be free of harrow forever. her leash would be cut and she’d be on her own to carve out a life for herself.

what happened instead is that harrow hunted her down. she wasn’t even gone a full day, just long enough to get a taste of freedom before it was crushed to dust. harrow did not just thwart her escape attempt, but she proved that even making it off planet isn’t enough to escape a paranoid, obsessive, power-hungry hag who gets off to killing any avenue of relief gideon might get a whiff of.

from where she lay facing the wall, she rolls onto her side to instead eye the cell door.

“ oh how I pined for your acerbic little face in the long, lonely hours I was away. don’t you have anything better to do than hover outside my cell and ask stupid questions? why don’t you jump down the elevator shaft, or ponder a bone? or ponder your bones after jumping down the elevator shaft. ”

deepthrting the mic. harrow was a cruel and abusive and vitrolic and awful person who took all her trauma and frustration and varying horrific coping methods out on gideon for years and came to realize it was wrong and wanted to change. just because she wanted to start over does not change the fact gideon suffered at her hands needlessly through her emotional and physical abuse. just because she was forgiven does not mean she is not guilty of her actions. just because she was socially conditioned and traumatized in her behaviors does not justify them or make them disappear. these are statements that could should and do coexist.

gideon dozes lightly, just skimming the surface of sleep when she feels a weight sink into her lap. she jolts out of her doze, embarrassingly a name slipping off her tongue—

“ harrow? ”

this creates an unfortunate circumstance for a few reasons, but perhaps most pressing is harrow has been caught red-handed. gideon isn’t sure if harrow’s pride will allow her to continue that quiet descent into her lap, so in a wild attempt to make her more comfortable, gideon finds her fingers, warm and calloused, reaching to comb through short cropped hair in no need of rearranging.

∗ 33﹕ sender  hovers  over  receiver’s  shoulder  as  they  complete  a  task .

gideon nav has attracted a second shadow. her first balances a rapier with a posture aiglamene might make her eat her sword for, and the second looks like a poised vulture. she shoots her a look over her broad shoulder.

“ you know, it would be a hell of a lot easier to focus if I didn’t have your humongous black eyes staring at me. did you run out of old books to smell? ”

THE CLICK OF HARSHLY GRIT TEETH is a nigh audible one, the ones adorning her throat and sleeves and ears chattering soft musical agreement.

she wants to jump over the counter. she wants to grab the redhead by the lapels of that stupid apron and haul her out the doors to demand to know the audacity that she should derail harrow's regularly mapped routine injecting her overbearing presence at the cafe they both well knew was on her route.

she wants to grab gideon by the face and squeeze, all the while reminding her the impropriety of disregarding having an inside voice. visibly, her nostrils flare, and she does none of these things. harrow glides to the counter, expression like the grave, ears buzzing oddly.

" i hope you choke on it, " she states in clipped, certain terms, then, " do they know you've stolen a uniform, or should i tell them? "

there’s the harrow she knows. for a second gideon was convinced she was having a stroke. she greets harrow at the counter, resting her elbows and crosses her forearms.

“ I think they’ve noticed by now, they just keep me around 90% for my looks, and 10% for my personality. ” she gives a little finger wiggle to her coworker, then motions that she will be just a minute before directing hues like a glinting wedding band back to harrow. her smile hangs crooked like a broken, swinging sign. “ your obsession with me is getting more and more obvious, harrow. did you start coming here only after I got hired? ”
