i honestly don't really understand why "some people prefer watching gameplay online rather than playing games themselves" is treated as such a taboo when being a spectator is considered a pretty mundane way to engage with most sports, game shows, reality tv or even just like. chess.

I haven't watched any of the "why are there so many larpers in x" because frankly I couldn't give less of a shit. But to me the discours falls apart the moment they don't differentiate between "I only watch gameplay" and "i have an opinion despite not having engaged with the game at all". While I understand that a game is, well, meant to be played there are many circumstances that prevent people from playing(no money, no energy, disabilities etc) there are still ways to consume the media and understand it. The only part in which they have less "valid" opinions is when it comes to the gameplay and how it feels. On the other hands larpers do not engage with the medium at all those are the people whose opinions on the games are prerty much completely invalid.

All in all I think a lot of these people don't like their franchise getting too mainstream, they have to start gatekeeping aka. "I am a real fan because I played some obscure and frankly shit entry in the franchise and you did not"
