pepper tries to hide the blush on her face at his obvious antics. the compliment wasn't a lie, in fact, quite a full truth. he did look nice in that tuxedo and she should know, she picked it. when he compliments her dress, she looks down and then back up again, blush more present on her cheeks.

"thank you. i debated on the color for quite awhile." pepper softly muses while reaching for two glasses of champange as the waiter walked by with them. she extends her arm to offer one to tony. "so. i'm sure this isn't just a have fun sort of party. are we looking for anything in particular?"

She'd picked well, the tightly svelte jacket, the red trim. But her? She was stunning. A whole new world of beauty drawn and crafted before him, it was quite honestly almost enough to take his breath away. Jaw tightens, smile grows, and with a careful grasp he takes the glass from her hand, giving her the faintest little cheers with the raised glass.

"In this moment, I think we should just schmooze, you know?" Pulling away his gaze, he turns to look about the whole party, idly pursing his lips. "I usually only barely take these things seriously to begin with. They're mostly just the rich and famous kissing each other's asses."

this is not gonna end well.

Scanners work overtime, LIDAR sensors pinging every surface, an effort to scope out just about any hostiles that may be lurking in the rubble and shadows. Repeatedly sparking up, making note of any movement. Not that the suit was in condition at the moment to do anything, it had sustained some heavy levels of damage in the scuffle. To the point that the Adamantium alloy frame were doing most of the work in keeping Antonio standing while servos tried to reset.

"No? Come on. Just another day, right?" Auxiliary powers were running, which meant repulsor system was offline until they got a kinetic charge. He'd have to work on alternatives when if they got out of here. "Looks like we're alone now at least? Last guy you punched was the last bit of consistent movement."

things got a little out of hand.

The distinct smell of fabric burning is one that permeates through the whole space. Tony, for his part, is entirely quiet while the entire situation runs its processes through his mind. The glass is kind of a new smell, didn't work with that much to get acquainted with it. Clicking his tongue idly, looking to the floor, the mess. There's temptation to just turn on heel and walk his happy ass onward.

"Out of hand is... A way of putting it." Lips purse, hands finding their way into his pockets. Calculating the total property damage he'd have to account for. How much did that Yankee jersey even cost? Giant's played Super Bowl ball probably a little more.

"You uh... Got a story behind the mess?"

A grin touches the edges of his lips, though he tried to fight it. The compliment straightens his spine subtly while a flat palm runs over the front of the jacket. With a little play-self awareness, he exaggerates a little pose and stretches his leg out.

"Yeah? You don't think it makes me look too puffy?" Backs of his fingers press against his jawline. Auburn eyes sparkle as his gaze turns on her in turn. Not as chastely as he was going to pretend. They were still just business partners. This thing he was feeling? Couldn't exist, couldn't happen.

"Dress looks good on you, too. Couldn't have been cheap." Not that it mattered much to him, on his dime they had to look their best as partners. Representatives of the company, and outshining with a unique sparkle that dwarfed everyone else. Well, she fit the buck at least.

It's not easy to startle Tony, when he was off on expeditions like this he had tried his best to keep wits about him. Lord Industries was something else, though. A lot of pomp and circumstance had done a lot in drawing his eyes and attention. Flare was one thing, but having the gumption to back it all up was something that sort of put them in the minority for competitors.

"No, no-- Just getting a tour of the campus, checking out the competition. You know?"

"If you wanna get technical? My heart stopped, but my brain still functioned!"

The faceplate is lifted, his half prone form hunched over itself. The armor weighed about as much as an Abrams, so there wasn't much in the way of movement until some of the other systems came online. The built in defibrillator had used the last little bit of auxiliary power, what hadn't been used for that kept his other organs in stasis so he didn't go into shock. Reinforce the chest plate for future use, thicker lines of the minimal Adamantium brace-- He'd have to cut the extra weight somewhere though.

"But hey! I'm here! I'm alive, we're good!" Somewhere in the distance, a small canister bursts, one of the final bits of collateral from the former fight. AIM invading had been expected, he hoped that they got everyone out safely. What she was doing here was--

"Hey, wait a minute, why didn't you evac with everyone else?!"

Kree Invasion : Stopped

Tony went down somewhere north of Brooklyn, at least he thinks so.

For whatever reason in this moment flat on his back in the middle of nowhere, all he can think of is his mother.

There he was, a little tinkerer as she used to call him. Said she reminded him of her brother. Covered in dirt and grease, Maria Stark's car, which had not worked for years, lovingly deconstructed with car by an eight year old's diligent hands. When she got back to their little summer place away from Howard and the tension he brought home, she found him sitting on the engine block. The thing was the size of him, and there he was refitting the pistons back into the cylinders.

He expected her to be mad. She just laughed, made him a glass of lemonade, and helped him put it back together. It took hours, but when they were done, she took him for a drive in the car that seemingly ran better than ever. They drove along the coast of southern California and got ice cream after visiting abuela, she even let him drive for a few minutes in the parking lot outside of the ice cream place.

Would have been a good memory to leave things on, he thinks to himself.

Instead, he wakes with a splitting headache, staring up at the sky freshly cleared of the clouds that had ushered in what could have been the end. Concussion, several bruised ribs, broken arm, fractured shin. Inside the armor he can feel the weight of being a hero. One of the many selfless ones who put their lives on the line for the world. But he doesn't get time to languish in it when he rolls over and pukes.

Hank was the one who found him first, carried him back to the City proper. Felt like a hero's parade, everyone standing outside of their homes and businesses, amidst broken glass and rubble. Clapping, thanking, cheering. Of course, he barely remembers it, having spent the majority of it barely conscious laying out flat on Hank's palm. All the pain, all the headache, the misery. It had been worth it, to know these people got to see the sun come out.

Fighting against supervillains like Obadiah, terrorists with old Stark tech, mercenaries trying to steal his prototypes and new tech--He'd been doing this for years at this point, and it really... all of it felt kind of like training wheels at this point.

Vaguely, he remembers Janet saying something about team-up.

"Well if we're all SUPERheroes, our team is like the ULTIMATE super team. Like we're... The Ultimates!"

Through vague consciousness, he remembers groaning. Lifting his unbroken arm and holding a finger up.

"No-- No, that's terrible-- It sounds like a boy band."
