55 Words to Describe Someone's Voice

I was sitting on the computer last night trying to be productive and actually write something. My first sentence included the character listening to a voice through an intercom and my first thought was, “What kind of voice is it?"

So, naturally, I found myself googling the different ways to describe a voice. I present to you my findings! I hope you all find it useful.

adenoidal (adj): if someone’s voice is adenoidal, some of the sound seems to come through their nose

appealing (adj): an appealing look/voice shows that you want help, approval, or agreement

breathy (adj): with loud breathing noises

brittle (adj): if you speak in a brittle voice, you sound as if you are about to cry

croaky (adj): if someone’s voice sounds croaky, they speak in a low, rough voice that sounds as if they have a sore throat

dead (adj): if someone’s eyes or voice are dead, they feel or show no emotion

disembodied (adj): a disembodied voice comes from someone who you cannot see

flat (adj): spoken in a voice that does not go up and down; this word is often used for describing the speech of people from a particular region

Hi! I was wondering what you think about Woolim seeming to favour Sunggyu a lot more than Woohyun, since Sunggyu usually has a lot more lines and already has been given two solos, compared to Woohyun. Do you think Infinite's other members get annoyed with Sunggyu about it? xxxx

hello, hi. wow, it’s been a while since i’ve gotten an anon ask. okay. hm. well, let’s start by acknowledging that it’s rather obvious that sunggyu is “favored” in that sense; it’s hard to dispute. but “favored” makes it kinda sound as if there isn’t really a professional basis for it. but i think there is. that is also very clear, which is why you probably don’t see sunggyu getting as much flack (is that a real word) as say, snsd yoona.

sunggyu is the leader and the main/lead vocalist, two positions that give automatic weight for attention and popularity. he is a good leader and main/lead vocal, and of a group that has a strong reputation on positive incline, which gives him even more positive spotlight. the important thing is that he has very dynamic foundational characters that are perfect for variety: grandpa gyu, leader gyu, baby gyu, etc. SO, my point here is that it’s not hard to see why woollim is so ready to put gyu out there; he has a good foundation for promotions. (oh and it helps that he’s built an image of caring about the music more than the being-an-idol gig.)

now, is it to the point that sunggyu just overshadows woohyun? not necessarily. woohyun is definitely in the top three most popular members. korean girls especially love his playful yet dashing, manly image. woohyun often acts as the spokesperson for the group and he is also a strong main vocal. so it’s difficult to see where the decision to push sunggyu over woohyun would come from. but i have two thoughts on this: 1. i don’t think woollim WON’T give woohyun a solo debut eventually, 2. woohyun doesn’t have a public friendly image like sunggyu does. he could completely prove me wrong in a few years, but i think if woohyun went solo, his promotions would mostly be aimed at the same demographics as the whole of infinite- young kids who like kpop idols. what, with his over-the-top aegyo and his “here comes the smolder” exaggerated prince charming act. put that next to mr. chameleon gyu who has the ability to reach a wider audience…it’s possible that woollim chose to push sunggyu for this reason. but i don’t really think they won’t ever give woohyun a solo album- his voice is too nice and he IS too popular to ignore.

do i think the other members get annoyed with sunggyu for getting more opportunities and popularity? yeah, who wouldn’t? they are all great guys, that much is obvious, but they’re still human. i’m sure they all feel jealousy to some level regarding this because they are all ambitious kids (otherwise they wouldn’t be in this field). but i also think that they seem mature and good-natured enough not to let those kind of feelings grow too much or fester. plus, being in the industry that they’re in- they gotta learn to deal with those feelings swiftly or they’re gonna depressed because there’s ALWAYS going to be people who are more popular or successful than you (unless maybe you’re beyonce). so i’m sure they’ve learned to overcome such things. or maybe they’re saints and they barely notice those kinds of feelings. who knows. this is just my guess.

anyway, i’m pretty sure this is all i have to say on the subject. i hope this…does something for ya? lol. anyway, thanks for asking and stop by next time if you feel like it.

Soul searching

There was a time when comebacks made me nothing except excited. But it seems like as time goes on there was less and less excitement, and instead more and more worry, frustration, and dissatisfaction.

Being a fan starts out simple for everyone. The song was great, the choreography was on point, the concept was captivating, the visuals were stunning. Then gradually, things start to change. Whereas previously you had no expectations, you start developing them in each succeeding comeback.

Then all of a sudden, you find that nothing satisfies you. The song is generic. The choreography is unoriginal. The MV is boring. The outfits are ugly. The concept is uninspired. One member has too many lines. Another has too few. Every comeback you have something to complain about. Each comeback is worse than the last.

Or if the comebacks are good, then the problem is the management. Why is there this unit/solo, but not that one? I want this member to have drama/variety/MC gigs, get them some. Why can’t they come back sooner? Scratch that, push the comeback date back so they don’t go against this artist. Can we have two comebacks a year and longer promotions? Oh but they shouldn’t promote too long or too often because it will tire them out. Every move the company makes seems wrong.

And then there’s the results. You want them to get an all-kill, you want them to sell 200,000 albums, you want a million Youtube views in 3 days and 5 million in a week. You want a triple crown on music shows, a daesang at the year-end awards. You want more hype, more attention, more popularity, more recognition. When it doesn’t happen, you blame it on the management or on the comeback, or both.

You’re convinced everything is just not as good as before, but really, it’s your mindset that has changed. You’ve gotten too emotionally invested and started concerning yourself with things that are beyond your control and ultimately unimportant, and it brings the enjoyment of the comebacks down.

It’s music, shouldn’t it just be about the songs? Kpop is so obscured by the frills and the numbers–people are more concerned about the concepts and visuals than about the songs, and they care more about the charting than their own enjoyment (in other words, you’re more worried aobut whether other people like it than whether you like it).

What happened to the days when I was just happy seeing them releasing new music and performing on stage? How did we lose all that and get tied up in these other things? What else really matters, if they are happy and still releasing music? Why can’t we be happy just knowing that they’re coming back?

I’ve decided that this comeback I will do a little soul searching as a fan. I’m looking for the ability to be just plain excited again, I want that simple happiness that got me into Kpop in the first place back.
